IELTS Score for a Bachelor's in Germany 2026–27: Who Needs It, University Requirements, Visa Rules, Fees and When to Test

The honest answer first: most Indian students applying for a Bachelor's in Germany need a German certificate, not IELTS, because almost all Bachelor's programmes and the Studienkolleg year are taught in German. IELTS matters for the small group of English-taught programmes. This guide shows when you need it, what score those programmes ask for, what the German Missions accept for the visa, the 2026 fees and when to book.

Quick answer

You need IELTS only if you apply to an English-taught Bachelor's. The English-taught examples we checked on the universities' own pages ask for CEFR B2: Hochschule Rhein-Waal accepts IELTS Academic 5.5 (TOEFL iBT 72), TH Ingolstadt and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg ask for B2-level English, and Constructor University asks for 6.5. English covers only about 4% of Bachelor's programmes and the Studienkolleg year is taught in German, so most Indian students need German proof instead: at least B1 for a German-taught Studienkolleg, and generally C1 for direct entry. For the student visa, the German Missions in India accept IELTS, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge certificates but not PTE, Duolingo or TOEFL Home Edition, and not medium-of-instruction letters. IELTS costs ₹19,000 in India, results arrive in about two days, and scores are officially valid for two years. If you need it, take it by December 2026 or January 2027 for Winter 2027/28.

IELTS for a Bachelor's in Germany at a glance

You prove your language twice: once for admission, where each university or Studienkolleg sets its own rule, and again for the visa, where the German Missions in India accept only certain certificates. The costly mistakes happen in the gap between the two, when a student is admitted on a test the visa section does not recognise, or prepares IELTS when the programme needed German.

Key takeaways

  • IELTS is for English-taught Bachelor's only. For German-taught programmes and the Studienkolleg you need German certificates (Goethe, telc, TestDaF, DSH).
  • English-taught examples ask for B2: Hochschule Rhein-Waal IELTS Academic 5.5 (TOEFL iBT 72); Constructor University IELTS 6.5 (TOEFL iBT 90); TH Ingolstadt and FAU ask for B2-level English. Read each programme page, because requirements differ.
  • For the visa: "neither Duolingo tests nor Pearson PTE or TOEFL home edition tests are recognized for applications in India", and medium-of-instruction letters are not accepted as language proof.
  • Fee and format: ₹19,000 for IELTS Academic in 2026; the paper test has been discontinued in India; computer-test results arrive in about two days.
  • Timing: results are valid for two years, so test about three months before your first deadline, not a year earlier.

Do you need IELTS at all? English or German by route

The test you need depends on the language of instruction of the programme you are entering, and on your route. Use this table before you spend ₹19,000.

Your route Language of instruction Proof you need IELTS needed?
Studienkolleg (Class XII at 70%+ and APS) German (the college prepares you for a German-taught degree) German certificate: at least B1 for the visa, and the level the college asks (often B1–B2) No, unless the college says otherwise
Direct entry to a German-taught Bachelor's (JEE Advanced, or one successful year of a Bachelor's in India) German German, generally C1 (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4) No
English-taught Bachelor's (for example at a university of applied sciences or a private university) English English proof, often B2 (IELTS 5.5–6.5) Yes
English-taught Bachelor's that adds a German course English plus German English proof, and some German at admission or during the course Yes, plus German

Most English-taught programmes sit in fields such as artificial intelligence, computer science, data science and business, mostly at universities of applied sciences and private universities. With only about 4% of Bachelor's programmes taught in English, most students should prepare German, not IELTS. Browse the language split by course in our Bachelor's courses guide.

Taking the German route? If your programme or Studienkolleg is taught in German, your language certificate is German, not IELTS. Start with the Yastudy German course (A1 to B2) so your level is ready for your application and visa.

What IELTS score do English-taught Bachelor's programmes ask for?

There is no national minimum. Each university, and often each programme, sets its own, usually as a CEFR level with the test scores it treats as equivalent. The test makers map the main tests to CEFR levels like this:

CEFR level IELTS (overall) TOEFL iBT (new 1–6 scale) TOEFL iBT (old 0–120) What it means in practice
B2 5.5–6.5 4–4.5 ≈ 72–94 Enough for many English-taught Bachelor's
C1 7.0–8.0 5–5.5 ≈ 95 and up Asked by competitive programmes and the Missions' general expectation for degree studies

IELTS says 5.5–6.5 is equivalent to B2 and 7–8 to C1. ETS introduced a 1–6 TOEFL scale on 21 January 2026 and shows comparable 0–120 scores for two years. Universities set their own cut-offs, which may differ.

English requirements at four English-taught options

English-taught Bachelor's programmes are few, so we list four we could verify. Requirements vary by programme even within one university, so always check the programme page.

Programme or university IELTS Academic TOEFL iBT Other notes
Hochschule Rhein-Waal (English-taught Bachelor's) 5.5 (B2) 72, or 4 on the new scale B2 required; PTE Academic 59 and Cambridge certificates also accepted for admission (PTE does not work for the visa from India); apply through uni-assist; Bachelor's programmes start in the winter semester only
Constructor University, Bremen (undergraduate) 6.5 90, or 4.5 on the new scale Duolingo 110 and Cambridge also accepted; waiver after at least six years of English-only teaching. Duolingo and waivers do not satisfy the visa from India unless your admission letter confirms your English (see the visa rules)
FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg (B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence) B2 general certificate, or B1+ with B2 reading Accepted certificates listed by FAU No German required; medium-of-instruction letters and home-edition tests not accepted; admission test
TH Ingolstadt (B.Sc. Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence) B2 (accepted tests listed by THI) Accepted tests listed by THI Apply 1 April to 15 July; uni-assist VPD with your APS certificate; TestAS or SAT optional; non-EU tuition €800 a semester

The pattern: English-taught Bachelor's programmes at applied-science and private universities mostly ask for B2, from IELTS 5.5 at Hochschule Rhein-Waal to 6.5 at Constructor. None of the official pages we checked asked for C1 at Bachelor's level, but German-taught programmes do. Aim half a band above the stated minimum.

Which language test do you need, and is your score enough?

Choose your route and the test you have (or plan to take). You'll see whether it works for admission at the four English-taught examples on this page and for the German student visa from India.

Used when you choose IELTS Academic.

Based on the German Missions in India and the universities' own pages (checked October 2026). Your programme page decides. See Yastudy IELTS coaching.

Your IELTS Academic overall CEFR level What it opens
Below 5.5 Below B2 Below all four examples; work on your English before you apply
    5.5 Lower B2 Meets Hochschule Rhein-Waal's minimum; below Constructor's 6.5
    6.0 B2 Meets Rhein-Waal with a buffer; check FAU's and THI's accepted lists; below Constructor's 6.5
    6.5 B2 Meets Rhein-Waal and Constructor; a safe B2 for most English-taught programmes
7.0 or higher C1 Meets all four examples, gives a buffer for section minimums and matches the Missions' C1 expectation for degree studies

Tiers are indicative. Your programme's own page decides, and some set a minimum per section.

IELTS and the German student visa: what the Missions accept

Your university decides admission. For the national (D) student visa, the German Missions in India check your language proof against their own rules. Their student visa checklist asks for proof of language skills in the language of instruction of the study course or the preparatory course, as a rule at least B2, where this is not confirmed by the German university in the admission notification. It adds that only certificates approved by the German government are accepted, such as Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, ÖSD, IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge, and that certificates based on online exams are not accepted.

The Missions' student page adds that for degree studies the required level is generally C1, regardless of whether the studies are in German or English, and that Duolingo, Pearson PTE and TOEFL Home Edition are not recognised for applications in India. For a preparatory course (Studienkolleg), the same page sets at least B1 German for a German-taught course and at least B2 English for an English-taught one.

Proof German universities Student visa (Missions in India)
IELTS Academic (test centre) Accepted by English-taught programmes Accepted
TOEFL iBT at a test centre Widely accepted Accepted
Cambridge English (for example C1 Advanced) Accepted by many Accepted
PTE Academic Accepted by some (for example Hochschule Rhein-Waal, 59) Not recognised
Duolingo English Test Accepted by some (for example Constructor, 110) Not recognised
TOEFL iBT Home Edition Some universities Not recognised (online exam)
Medium-of-instruction letter or exemption letter Some universities accept English-taught schooling Not accepted as a certificate; only an admission letter that confirms your language skills helps
German certificate (Goethe, telc, TestDaF, DSH) Required for German-taught programmes and the Studienkolleg Accepted, and the right proof if your course or preparatory course is in German
The Duolingo, PTE and MOI trap

A university can admit you on Duolingo, PTE or your school's English medium. If the admission letter does not confirm your language skills, the visa section will still want a recognised certificate. For English-taught programmes, the safe route is to take IELTS Academic (or TOEFL iBT at a centre) once, before you apply, and use it for admission and the visa. For German-taught programmes, take a German certificate.

    IELTS and your APS file

APS India's Class XII and JEE checklists include a copy of a language certificate, German and/or English. APS's leaflets say that, without a preparatory language course, at least B2 is required in the language of instruction, and that exemption letters and medium-of-instruction letters should not be submitted. APS itself does not require a particular level; universities and the visa section do. If your course is English-taught, an IELTS or TOEFL certificate serves both. If it is German-taught, a German certificate does. See our Bachelor's APS guide for the full checklists.

When to take IELTS for Winter 2027/28

Have your result before you apply: most universities want it with the application, and an application through uni-assist takes time to process. Allow time for a retake. Mind the two-year validity: a test taken too early may expire before your visa appointment.

    When What to do Why
October to December 2026 Decide whether your programme is English-taught; if so, book IELTS and start preparing Allows a retake
December 2026 to January 2027 Sit IELTS Academic if you need it Result ready before applications open
February to March 2027 Retake if a section is short; apply to APS between December 2026 and February 2027 Buffer before deadlines
1 March to 15 July 2027 Application windows; many winter deadlines are 15 July. TH Ingolstadt's window runs 1 April to 15 July Needs your certificate
July to August 2027 Admission letter, blocked account (€11,904), visa appointment with the original certificate Visa needs the certificate

Constructor University's Early Action round runs from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027, followed by rolling admission to 31 July 2027; apply early if you need a visa. Dates follow Winter 2026/27 pages and should be re-checked in spring 2027.

Sending your IELTS score to German universities

    • uni-assist: upload a clear scan of your Test Report Form (TRF). uni-assist says it can verify IELTS and TOEFL certificates online.
    • University portals: upload the TRF; some also ask for the TRF number so they can verify it.
    • One sitting: some universities need the minimum in a single sitting; check the programme page.
    • Keep the original for the visa appointment, with copies as the checklist asks.
    • English-taught applications through uni-assist (for example Hochschule Rhein-Waal) need your APS certificate too. See our Bachelor's APS guide.

How to reach IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 after Class 12: a 6-week plan

School-leavers often have good vocabulary but lose bands to technique, timing and Writing Task 2. This is the plan our trainers use with students who need 6.0 or 6.5 for an English-taught programme. Your Class 12 English marks do not count towards IELTS.

    Week Focus What to do
1 Baseline Take one full computer-based mock under exam conditions. Note your band per section and the gap to your target.
2 Writing Task 2 Learn the essay types and a clear structure; write three essays and get each marked against the band descriptors.
3 Reading Timed passages daily; practise True/False/Not Given and matching headings, the usual band-killers.
4 Listening and Writing Task 1 Daily listening sets with spelling checks; graph and process descriptions in 20 minutes.
5 Speaking Two mock interviews a week; record yourself, fix fillers and develop Part 2 answers to two minutes.
6 Full rehearsal Two full mocks on computer; review errors; book the test only when your mock is at or above the target in every section.

Aim for half a band above the requirement in every section. That protects you against a section minimum and a nervous test day.

Need structured IELTS preparation? If your English-taught programme requires IELTS, see Yastudy IELTS coaching (live classes and computer-based mocks), or Get a free eligibility check to confirm your target band first.

8 IELTS mistakes that cost Bachelor's applicants time and money

    • Preparing IELTS for a German-taught programme. If your course or Studienkolleg is in German, you need German proof.
    • Taking PTE or Duolingo because a university accepts it. The visa section in India does not.
    • Relying on a medium-of-instruction letter without checking the programme and your admission letter.
    • Taking General Training or IELTS for UKVI instead of IELTS Academic.
    • Missing a section minimum while meeting the overall score.
    • Testing too late and applying after a deadline, or with a result pending.
    • Testing too early, so the two-year validity runs out before the visa.
    • Leaving the original at home: the visa appointment needs your certificate in original and copies.

IELTS for a Bachelor's in Germany: 20 questions Indian students ask

    Do you need IELTS?

Is IELTS required for a Bachelor's in Germany?

Only for English-taught programmes. For German-taught programmes and the Studienkolleg you need German proof.

Do I need IELTS for the Studienkolleg?

No, as a rule. The Studienkolleg is taught in German, so you need German proof: the German Missions ask for at least B1 for a German-taught preparatory course, and colleges often ask for B1–B2.

    Is a medium-of-instruction letter enough?

Not for the visa: APS and the Missions say not to submit exemption or medium-of-instruction letters as language proof.

Does my Class 12 English mark count?

No. Class 12 English marks are not a language certificate.

Can I study in Germany without IELTS?

Yes, if your programme is German-taught (you need German instead), or if your university accepts another recognised certificate such as TOEFL iBT or Cambridge. Some universities waive English proof, for example Constructor University after at least six years of English-only teaching, but the visa section may still ask for a recognised certificate unless your admission letter confirms your English.

    Scores

What IELTS score is required for a Bachelor's in Germany?

There is no national minimum. The English-taught examples we checked ask for B2: IELTS Academic 5.5 at Hochschule Rhein-Waal and 6.5 at Constructor University, with TH Ingolstadt and FAU asking for B2-level English. Check each programme page.

How many Bachelor's programmes are taught in English?

About 420, around 4% of all, according to DAAD figures for summer 2025.

    Is IELTS 6.0 enough?

For some programmes: it clears Hochschule Rhein-Waal's 5.5 minimum with a buffer. Constructor University asks for 6.5, so 6.0 is not enough there.

What is the IELTS equivalent of B2 and C1?

According to IELTS, 5.5–6.5 is B2 and 7–8 is C1. Universities may set their own cut-offs.

    Visa and accepted tests

Do I need IELTS for the student visa?

The visa needs language proof in the language of instruction of your course or preparatory course, as a rule at least B2, unless your admission letter confirms it. For English-taught programmes, IELTS, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge are accepted.

Is PTE accepted for the Germany student visa?

No. The German Missions in India say PTE, Duolingo and TOEFL Home Edition are not recognised for applications in India.

    Is Duolingo accepted in Germany?

Some universities accept it for admission (Constructor University lists 110), but it is not recognised for the visa from India.

    Which IELTS should I take?

IELTS Academic, at a test centre, not General Training or IELTS for UKVI.

    Fees, results and timing

What is the IELTS fee in India in 2026?

₹19,000 for IELTS Academic or General Training; ₹19,250 for IELTS for UKVI; ₹12,650 for a One Skill Retake.

Is paper-based IELTS still available in India?

No. IELTS on paper has been discontinued in India, but you can choose IELTS Writing on Paper: Listening and Reading on computer, Writing on paper.

How long does it take to get results?

About two days for the computer-delivered test.

    How long is IELTS valid?

Officially two years from the test date. Plan for it to be valid at your visa appointment.

Do German universities accept IELTS One Skill Retake?

Not clearly. IDP does not list German universities among those accepting it, so ask your university in writing first.

When should I take IELTS for Winter 2027/28?

By December 2026 or January 2027 if your programme requires it, so you can apply from March 2027 and still retake.

How do I send my IELTS score?

Upload a scan of your Test Report Form; uni-assist verifies IELTS and TOEFL online. Keep the original for the visa.
