What is the dMAT?
The dMAT is a standardised study aptitude test for people who want to start a Master's programme in Germany. It is developed by German universities together with g.a.s.t., and its format was created with the Universities of Ulm and Kassel with support from the DAAD.
On 29 June 2026, APS India announced that the dMAT would become an additional element of the APS documents for selected Master's applicants. APS India still checks your mark sheets and degree in the usual way. The dMAT adds one comparable test result to that file.
Three things the dMAT is not:
- It is not a language test. It measures reasoning and applied problem solving.
- It does not replace the APS certificate. You need both.
- It is not pass or fail. APS India states that a low score does not automatically lead to a refusal of the APS certificate.
Who has to take the dMAT?
You need the dMAT if all of these apply to you:
- You are applying for a Master's programme in Germany for the summer semester 2027 or later.
- You go through APS India, and you completed your APS online registration and shipped your documents on or after 29 June 2026.
- Your previous degree falls in one of these groups: Engineering, Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics, or Business / Management.
You do not need it if you are a Bachelor's or PhD applicant, if your degree is in another field, if you take part in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or partnership programme, or if your APS procedure started before 29 June 2026.
Some common degrees are not automatically covered, for example BCA, B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Biotechnology, B.Arch and B.Pharm. APS India decides from the exact wording on your degree documents.
Check your degree in our dMAT eligibility guide, which includes the full APS field list.
dMAT exam pattern
The test has two modules. Every APS candidate takes the same modules and gets the same tasks, whatever their degree.
| Part | What you do | Tasks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Module | 90 minutes in total | ||
| Figure Sequences | Find the rule by which figures move, turn and change colour, and pick the next two grids | 20 | 25 minutes |
| Mathematical Equations | Solve small systems of equations in which letters stand for numbers from 1 to 20 | 20 | 25 minutes |
| Latin Squares | Find the missing letter in a 5×5 grid in which each letter appears once per row and column | 20 | 25 minutes |
| Break | You may not leave the test centre | 30 minutes | |
| General Academic Module | Read short academic texts and answer single-choice questions on them | about 60 | 90 minutes |
You work without pen, paper or calculator for the whole exam.

Fee and registration
The dMAT costs €150. You pay g.a.s.t. online when you register. APS India does not handle registration or payment.
- Check your degree in anabin first. A dMAT certificate cannot make up for a university or degree that is not recognised in Germany, so APS India advises you to check your status in anabin before you pay.
- Create your account in the g.a.s.t. participant portal and choose the dMAT. Enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport.
- Upload a passport-style photo. Without it you will not be admitted to the test.
- Choose a test centre. Seats are given on a first come, first served basis, so popular cities can fill up.
- Pay the fee. Your registration is complete only when the fee has been paid.
Cancelling: you can cancel in the portal up to the registration deadline and get the fee back, less an administrative charge of up to 15%. After the deadline there is no refund, including if you miss the test.
Special arrangements: if you have a recognised disability and need an accommodation, you must register at least ten weeks before the test date.

Test day rules
These rules come from the information sheet g.a.s.t. issued for the 26 September 2026 exam.
- Arrive early. Candidates who are late are not admitted, even by a few minutes.
- Bring the same original ID you registered with, which is your passport or Aadhaar card, plus your participant number and exam ID.
- No electronic devices, including phones and smartwatches. No notepaper, no notes, no rulers, no calculators. Breaking a rule means immediate exclusion.
- Drinks are allowed in a transparent bottle without a label. Food is allowed only in the break.
- You may use the restroom during the exam, but the clock keeps running.
- Sign the consent form. It allows g.a.s.t. to transfer your result to APS in New Delhi. Without it your result cannot be sent.
Test centre addresses and reporting times appear in the participant portal in the week before the exam.
dMAT score and result
Your certificate shows two numbers for each module: a dMAT score from 0 to 200, where 100 is the mean, and a percentile rank, which is the share of participants who scored the same as you or lower. The two module scores are added for the overall result.
There is no pass mark. For the German student visa, g.a.s.t. says that taking the dMAT is sufficient.
How to download your certificate and read your dMAT result
How the dMAT fits into the APS process
- Check anabin for your university and degree.
- Register for the dMAT with g.a.s.t.
- Register with APS India and send your APS documents. You do not have to wait for the dMAT result. APS India can start checking your documents in the meantime.
- Take the dMAT and sign the consent form at the centre.
- Download your dMAT certificate and submit it to APS India.
- Receive your APS certificate. It is issued only after the dMAT certificate has been checked, and it shows your dMAT result.
- Apply to universities, then for your visa.
Send complete academic documents the first time. Only the dMAT certificate may follow later. APS India does not accept additional or updated mark sheets together with the dMAT certificate for the same APS procedure.
For the APS steps themselves, see our APS certificate guide and the step-by-step APS process.
How German universities use the dMAT
Every university you apply to will see your dMAT result, because it is printed on the APS certificate. What they do with it is their decision. APS India says a good result does not guarantee admission and a low result does not automatically lead to rejection.
Separately, a few programmes use the dMAT with their own subject modules as part of selection. RWTH Aachen does this for its M.Sc. Battery Science and Technology in Engineering, and the University of Göttingen for its Data Science Master's.

How to prepare for the dMAT
g.a.s.t. gives you three official resources, and you should use all of them because the exam itself shows only short reminders of the instructions.
- The preparation booklet for the General Academic Module, with instructions, exercises at three difficulty levels and worked solutions.
- Five short videos that show how each part of the test looks on screen.
- A demo version in your participant portal, under "Exam Preparation".
Beyond that, three habits matter most.
- Practise without writing anything down. The no-notes rule changes how you solve every task type. Mental practice from day one is the best use of your time.
- Train to the clock. Each Core subtest gives you 75 seconds per task. The General Academic Module gives you about 90 seconds per question, including reading.
- Learn the rules of each task type before you work on speed. The task types never change, so time spent understanding them pays off on every question.
Practise each task type with worked answers:
- Figure Sequences practice questions
- Mathematical Equations practice questions
- Latin Squares practice questions
- General Academic Module sample passages
- Timed dMAT sample test

dMAT, TestAS, GRE and GATE: what is the difference?
| Test | Who it is for | Role |
|---|---|---|
| dMAT | Master's applicants. Required through APS for selected Indian graduates. | Part of the APS documents |
| TestAS | Applicants to undergraduate programmes in Germany | Used by universities for Bachelor's admission. See our TestAS preparation. |
| GRE | Master's applicants worldwide | Asked for by some individual programmes |
| GATE | Indian engineering graduates | Asked for by some German programmes, sometimes as an alternative to the GRE |
g.a.s.t. states that the dMAT does not replace tests such as the GRE or GATE. If a programme asks for one of those, you still need it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of dMAT?
dMAT stands for digital Master Test. It is sometimes written out wrongly as "Digital Master Aptitude Test" or "Digital Master Admission Test". The official name used by g.a.s.t. and APS India is digital Master Test.
Is the dMAT mandatory for a Master's in Germany?
It is mandatory only for one group: Indian applicants whose previous degree is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management, and who apply for the summer semester 2027 or a later intake. For them the dMAT certificate is a required part of the APS documents.
Who conducts the dMAT?
g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V.) in Bochum, the organisation that also runs TestDaF and TestAS. APS India requires the certificate but does not run the test.
What is the dMAT exam fee?
The fee is €150, paid to g.a.s.t. during online registration. It is separate from the APS fee and from any coaching fee.
Is there negative marking in the dMAT?
g.a.s.t. describes the dMAT score as a conversion of the number of correct answers, and its instructions tell candidates to guess when they do not know an answer. Leaving a question blank therefore gains nothing.
Can I use a calculator or rough paper in the dMAT?
No. Notepaper, note-taking, rulers, calculators and all electronic devices are prohibited. A breach leads to exclusion from the exam.
How many times can I take the dMAT?
As many times as you wish, according to g.a.s.t.
How long is the dMAT score valid?
g.a.s.t. says the certificate is generally valid indefinitely. A university that receives the certificate directly may set its own rule on how old a result may be.
Does the dMAT replace the APS certificate, GRE or GATE?
No. The dMAT is one additional document inside the APS process. It does not replace APS document verification, and g.a.s.t. states that it does not replace tests such as the GRE or GATE.
Is the dMAT the same as TestAS?
No. Both are run by g.a.s.t., but TestAS is used for admission to undergraduate programmes, while the dMAT is for Master's applicants.
Can I take the dMAT outside India?
Yes. Besides the ten cities in India, g.a.s.t. offers the dMAT in Berlin, Germany, and in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Do I need German to take the dMAT?
No. The modules used for the APS process are in English.
