German for a master's in Germany: the short version
For admission to an English-taught master's, German usually isn't required: DAAD says you can "usually enrol in international degree programmes without proof of German language skills".[1] Everything after admission is different. German decides your job options, how quickly you can settle, and whether you can become a citizen.
Key takeaways
- English-taught programmes: show English, not German.[2] Some still require German during your studies: RPTU wants its international master's students to pass an A1 exam within the first year.[3]
- German-taught programmes: usually DSH-2, TestDaF with TDN 4 in every part, or an equivalent certificate.[4][5]
- Jobs: the Federal Employment Agency says many companies expect at least basic German and "English alone is often not enough".[6]
- Settling: EU Blue Card holders can get a settlement permit after 21 months with B1, or 27 months with A1.[7]
- Citizenship: B1 German and at least five years' residence: in October 2025 the Bundestag ended the three-year fast track.[8][9]

German for admission: what universities ask for
German-taught master's
DAAD says most universities require at least B2 for German-taught programmes,[2] but the certificates universities actually list are higher. Under the national framework rules, TestDaF counts as proof if you score at least TDN 4 in every part, though programmes may accept less in one part.[4] TU Dresden, for example, accepts:[5]
- DSH with at least DSH-2
- TestDaF with an average of at least 4 across the parts
- Goethe-Zertifikat C2
- telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule with "sehr gut", "gut" or "befriedigend"
TU Dresden's list was last updated in November 2022, and it states that the German requirement doesn't apply to applicants for English-taught master's.[5] Some TUM programmes are taught in both German and English, and you may need to prove both languages.[14]
English-taught master's that still require German
| Programme | German rule |
|---|---|
| RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau (international master's) | No German needed at the start, but you must pass the A1-level exam at RPTU within your first year (students with a Goethe A2 certificate from abroad, no older than one year, can be exempted)[3] |
| RPTU, Commercial Vehicle Technology M.Sc. | Basic German (A1) at the application deadline; a German exam by the end of the first year; B2 for German-taught electives[15] |
| HFT Stuttgart, General Management (German Track) | At least A2 at admission, with German I–III worth 15 credits during the programme[10] |
These rules are easy to miss on an English programme page. Check the language section of every programme on your university shortlist.
Do you need German for the German student visa?
Not for an English-taught programme. The German Missions in India ask you to prove the language of your studies: on the questionnaire, read "English" instead of "German" and upload proof of English. Answer "yes" to the German B2 question only if you really have B2 German.[11]
- Level: for degree studies, the Missions say the level required is "generally" C1, "regardless if the studies are in German or English", proved with a recognised certificate such as Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, ÖSD or telc for German.[11] How this applies with an admission letter is explained in our IELTS guide.
- Preparatory courses: at least B1 German for a course in German, or B2 English for one in English.[11]
- A German course alone isn't a reason for a student visa; it needs a separate language-course visa.[11]
German for student jobs and your career
This is where German pays off. The Federal Employment Agency says "Many companies expect at least basic German language skills" and that "English alone is often not enough".[6] Make it in Germany says finding a job is usually easier if you speak German, with exceptions such as IT, and that B1 is "a good basis for getting by in Germany".[12]
- While you study: you can work up to 140 full days or 280 half-days a year.[16] In our experience, B1 German opens far more working-student roles outside pure IT. More in our guide to student jobs.
- After you graduate: you can get a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for a qualified job.[17] German shortens that search.
- Everyday paperwork: your first weeks include city registration, a bank account and insurance, which are much easier with A1–A2.
German for permanent residence and citizenship
| Route | Time | German |
|---|---|---|
| Settlement permit with an EU Blue Card | 27 months, or 21 months with B1 | A1 (27 months) or B1 (21 months)[7] |
| Settlement permit after graduating in Germany | At least 2 years as a skilled worker | B1[13] |
| Settlement permit, general skilled-worker route | 3 years | B1[13] |
| Citizenship (naturalisation) | At least 5 years' residence | B1[8][9] |
Each route has other conditions too, such as pension contributions and income. The Bundestag voted on 8 October 2025 to end the three-year fast track to citizenship.[9]
How long does it take to learn German, level by level?
The Goethe-Institut in India gives these guidance ranges for reaching each level, depending on your prior knowledge: in 45-minute lessons for A1–B1 and in hours for B2 and C1.[18][19][20][21]
| Level | Goethe-Institut guidance | ≈ Hours | What you can do |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | 80–200 lessons | 60–150 | Introduce yourself, fill in forms, simple everyday situations |
| A2 | 200–350 lessons | 150–260 | Shopping, appointments, simple conversations about routine |
| B1 | 350–650 lessons | 260–490 | Work and study situations, phone calls, simple job interviews |
| B2 | 600–800 hours | 600–800 | Fluent everyday conversation, most office work |
| C1 | 800–1,000 hours | 800–1,000 | German-taught study and complex professional work |
For A1–B1, hours are our conversion of the lesson ranges (45 minutes each); for B2 and C1 the brochure gives hours. The "what you can do" column is our summary.

German for MS in Germany: 14 questions Indian students ask
Admission and visa
Is German required for MS in Germany?
Not for admission to most English-taught master's: you prove English instead. Some English-taught programmes still require German during your studies, such as RPTU's A1 exam in the first year. German-taught programmes need a certificate such as DSH-2 or TestDaF 4.
Can I study in Germany without knowing German?
Yes, in an English-taught programme. DAAD says you can usually enrol in international degree programmes without proof of German. You'll still need German for daily life and most jobs.
Is German needed for the German student visa?
Only if you study in German. For an English-taught programme, you prove English; the German Missions in India say to read "English" instead of "German" on the questionnaire.
Which German certificate do I need for a German-taught master's?
Usually DSH-2, TestDaF with TDN 4 in all parts, Goethe-Zertifikat C2, or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule. Each university publishes its accepted list.
Is A1 German mandatory for MS in Germany?
Not for admission to most English-taught programmes, but a few require it: RPTU's international master's students must pass A1 within the first year. We recommend reaching A1 before you fly anyway.
Jobs and residence
Can I get a part-time job in Germany without German?
Some, mainly in IT, but the Federal Employment Agency says English alone is often not enough. In our experience, B1 German opens many more working-student jobs.
Which German level do I need for a job after my master's?
It depends on the field: Make it in Germany says jobs are easier to find with German, IT being an exception. For most roles outside IT, we advise aiming for B1 to B2.
How does German help with permanent residence?
EU Blue Card holders can get a settlement permit after 21 months with B1 German, instead of 27 months with A1. Graduates of German universities need B1 for the two-year route.
What German level is needed for German citizenship?
B1, with at least five years' residence; the Bundestag ended the three-year fast track in October 2025.
Learning
How long does it take to learn German A1?
The Goethe-Institut gives 80–200 lessons of 45 minutes, about 60–150 hours. With 15 hours a week, that's roughly one to two and a half months.
How long does it take to reach B1 German?
The Goethe-Institut gives 350–650 lessons of 45 minutes, depending on prior knowledge: roughly 260–490 hours, or about four to eight months of intensive study.
Do Goethe certificates expire?
No. Goethe-Institut certificates are valid indefinitely, but an employer, university or authority may ask for a recent one.
Should I learn German before or after going to Germany?
Both. Reach A1 or A2 before you fly so the first weeks are easier, then keep going to B1 in your first year, when it starts to matter for jobs.
Does Yastudy teach German?
Yes. We run live online German courses from A1 to B2 in small batches, timed around your departure. The Advantage plan includes A1 and Premium includes A1 to B1.
