What does German B1 level mean?

B1 is the third of the six CEFR levels and the first independent level. You can handle most everyday and work situations in German.

With a German B1 certificate you show that you can:

  • Understand the main information when people use clear standard German on topics such as work, school and leisure
  • Speak simply and in a structured way about familiar topics, your interests, experiences, hopes and goals, and give reasons
  • Understand straightforward factual texts about your interests and your own field

You practise all four skills in every topic: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Vocabulary follows the official Goethe B1 word list, the Wortliste.

Goethe B1 exam: pattern, pass mark and fees

The German B1 exam most students take is the Goethe-Zertifikat B1. It has four modules, which you can take together on one day or one at a time.

Pass mark

60 of 100 points in each module. Each module is passed on its own.

B1 exam fee in India

₹18,800 for all four modules, or ₹4,700 for a single module, including GST, as listed by the Goethe-Institut India on 2 October 2026. The exam fee is paid to the exam centre when you book. It is not part of the course fee.

Booking and ID

You book online on the Goethe-Institut India website. A valid passport is the only ID accepted at the exam.

Result

You see your result in your Mein Goethe.de account. The exam invitation tells you when.

Certificate validity

The Goethe-Institut India says its certificates are valid indefinitely. Ask the embassy, employer or school that will receive yours how recent it must be.

Retake

You can repeat a single module as often as you need, so you only retake what you did not pass.

Goethe B1 exam papers and practice tests: the official Goethe B1 practice papers. Two sets, each with answers and listening audio. In the course you also write a mock test every week.

telc B1 exam: telc Deutsch B1 (Zertifikat Deutsch) tests the same four skills: reading and language elements for 90 minutes, listening for about 30 minutes, writing for 30 minutes, and speaking for about 15 minutes in pairs.

How the German B1 classes run

Live online, so you join from any city in India. Trainers include Raj, who studied at TU Munich in a German-taught program.

3 hours live, Monday to Friday

100 hours of class in about 7 weeks, plus about 2 hours of your own practice on each class day.

You speak in every class

Batches of 10 to 12, with 10 to 15 minutes of speaking practice in every class. The B1 speaking exam includes a short presentation, so you get used to speaking for longer without notes.

You never fall behind

Every class is recorded, and you can send your doubts on WhatsApp between classes.

A mock test every week

So the B1 exam pattern is familiar before exam day.

Exam-pass promise: if you don't clear the Goethe or telc B1 exam, you repeat the B1 batch without paying again. This needs at least 80% attendance and the exam taken within 3 months of finishing the level.

German B1 course fees

Take B1 on its own, or as part of a combo that costs less than paying level by level. The fee is the same for every student.

A2 to B1 combo

A2 and B1, 150 hours. Paid level by level this is ₹36,000, so you save ₹12,500.

A1 to B1 combo

₹29,500

A1, A2 and B1 from zero, 190 hours. Paid level by level this is ₹50,000, so you save ₹20,500.

What German B1 is enough for

These are the usual requirements. Some employers, schools and German states ask for more, so check the official page for your case.

Ausbildung

The visa for vocational training normally requires German at B1. The visa to look for a training place asks for B1 as well.

Studienkolleg

B1 to B2 is the level needed to sit the Studienkolleg entrance test, the route to a bachelor's degree.

Opportunity Card

German B1 adds 2 points on the points route.

Settling in Germany

EU Blue Card holders can get a settlement permit after 21 months with B1 German, instead of 27 months with A1.

B1 is not enough for nurses, who need B2 for recognition, or for German-taught degrees, which ask for about C1. Continue with the German B2 course.

German B1 course and exam: questions students ask

Is B1 German enough for Ausbildung?

Normally, yes. Make it in Germany, the German government's portal, says the visa for vocational training normally requires B1. Some professions, such as nursing, ask for B2, and an employer can ask for more.

Is B1 German enough to work in Germany?

It depends on your visa and your job. Ausbildung normally needs B1. Nurses need B2 for recognition. The EU Blue Card has no legal German requirement. At B1 you can handle most everyday and work situations.

How long does the German B1 course take?

About 7 weeks: 100 hours of live class, 3 hours a day from Monday to Friday, plus about 2 hours of your own practice on each class day. Starting from zero, you finish B1 by week 13.

Is B1 German hard?

B1 is the biggest step so far. It has twice the class hours of A2, longer texts, a forum post and a short presentation. That is why it gets 100 hours, and why you speak in every class.

What is the difference between German B1 and B2?

B1 covers everyday topics, simple opinions and clear standard German. B2 goes deeper: you handle abstract topics, debate complex issues, follow native speakers and communicate fluently. B1 takes 100 hours, but B2 takes 120.

What are the German B1 course fees?

₹20,000 for B1 on its own. The A2 to B1 combo is ₹23,500 and the A1 to B1 combo from zero is ₹29,500.
