MBA in Germany at a glance (2027 intakes)
Germany has two routes into management. A full-time MBA is a short, expensive programme for people with several years of work experience. A Master in Management (MiM or MSc) is a longer programme for recent graduates, and at public universities it can cost very little. Most Indian applicants fit one far better than the other, so start here.
| What you need to know | Full-time MBA | Master in Management (MiM / MSc) |
|---|---|---|
| Who it’s for | Professionals with 2–3+ years of full-time work after their degree (classes average 31–32 years old at Mannheim, ESMT and HHL[1][2][3]) | Final-year students and recent graduates; WHU’s MSc takes at most 2 years of experience[4] |
| Length | 12–15 months at the ranked schools; up to 21 months elsewhere | About 2 years (4 semesters at Mannheim, TUM and Frankfurt School) |
| Tuition | €4,600 a semester (Pforzheim, public) to €51,000 (ESMT, January 2028 start) | No tuition (Cologne) or €1,500 a semester (Mannheim) at public universities; €35,500–41,200 at private business schools |
| Admission test | Required at Mannheim, ESMT and HHL; flexible at WHU and Frankfurt School; not required at some private universities | Optional but worth points at Mannheim and Cologne; required at TUM (GMAT, 65th percentile for Indian degrees), WHU, Frankfurt School and HHL |
| English | IELTS 7.0 at Mannheim, WHU, ESMT and Frankfurt School | IELTS 7.0 (C1) at Mannheim; 7.5 at WHU; 5.5 at Cologne |
| Main intake | September at WHU, Frankfurt School and HHL; January at ESMT; four starts a year at Gisma | Autumn (August–October) |
| India-specific steps | APS certificate (₹18,000) for Indian degrees, and from the summer 2027 intake the dMAT (€150) if your bachelor’s is in engineering, commerce, economics, business or management[5] | |
| Visa money | €11,904 in a blocked account for living costs; if your programme charges tuition, also proof that your first year’s tuition is covered (paid, financed by a loan or an extra deposit)[6][7] | |
| After graduating | Up to 18 months to look for a job[8]; EU Blue Card from €45,934.20 a year for recent graduates in 2026[9] | |
Our honest view: with three or more years of good work experience and a budget of ₹60–70 lakh, a ranked German MBA is worth a serious look. As a fresher, or with a budget closer to ₹25–35 lakh, a Master in Management at a public university usually gives you a better chance, a lower cost and the same 18-month job-search permit.
What’s new for 2027 applicants
- The dMAT now affects many MBA and MiM applicants from India. From the summer 2027 intake, APS India issues certificates to engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business and management graduates only after they take the dMAT (€150). APS lists no exemption for a GMAT score or for work experience, and Mannheim Business School already asks Indian MBA applicants for the dMAT.[5][10]
- TOEFL scores look different. TOEFL iBT moved to a 1–6 scale in January 2026, so schools now ask for 4.5 (Mannheim, Frankfurt School), 5.0 (ESMT) or 5.5 (WHU).[10][11][12][13]
- New rankings. The FT Global MBA 2026 puts Mannheim first in Germany (=65th worldwide), then WHU (69th), ESMT (=79th) and Frankfurt School (=92nd). The FT Masters in Management 2026, published in September, ranks WHU 19th (first in Germany), Mannheim 34th and Frankfurt School 46th, and the QS Global MBA 2027 puts Mannheim 38th, Frankfurt School 53rd and WHU 58th.[14][15][16][17][18][19][20]
- Fee changes. ESMT’s full-time MBA rises to €51,000 for the January 2028 class[21], and TUM’s non-EU master’s fees rise from €4,000 or €6,000 to €4,600 or €6,800 a semester from winter 2027/28.[22]
MBA vs MiM vs MSc: which one should you apply for?
Full guide: MBA vs MiM vs MSc in Germany →
In Germany the three labels mean quite different things. Choose by your work experience first, then by budget.
| Full-time MBA | MiM at a private business school | MiM / MSc at a public university | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work experience | At least 2 years (WHU, HHL, Pforzheim) or 3 years (Mannheim, ESMT, Frankfurt School, Gisma, HWR Berlin) | No full-time job needed (WHU and HHL ask for about 3 months of internships); WHU accepts at most 2 years | None needed |
| Your bachelor’s subject | Any | Usually any | Often needs business credits: Mannheim 36 ECTS in business courses; Cologne 60 ECTS in business administration plus economics and maths[23][24] |
| Tuition | €42,000–51,000 at FT-ranked schools; about €15,000–24,000 at some state-recognised private universities | €35,500–41,200 | €0 (Cologne) to €1,500 a semester (Mannheim); TUM charges non-EU fees |
| Test | Depends on the school (see the GMAT section) | GMAT, GRE or the school’s own test | GMAT optional at Mannheim and Cologne; required at TUM |
| Yastudy | Free counselling | Free counselling | Pay-first plans from ₹24,999 |
A quick way to decide
- No full-time work experience yet: a Master in Management. None of the MBAs on this page that publish a rule accepts freshers.
- 1–2 years: a MiM (WHU’s MSc takes up to 2 years), or WHU’s or HHL’s MBA once you reach 2 years.
- 3+ years and a clear goal: a full-time MBA. Compare the ranked schools with the cheaper public and private options in the programme finder.
- Budget under about ₹40 lakh in total: a public-university MiM (about ₹26–32 lakh including living costs) or one of the lower-cost MBAs in the cost table (about ₹37–38 lakh).
Can you do an MBA in Germany without work experience?
Not at the ranked schools. Mannheim, ESMT and Frankfurt School ask for at least three years of full-time work after your first degree, and WHU and HHL for about two; Mannheim says internships don’t count.[25][11][13][12][3] The cheaper MBAs at Pforzheim (2 years), HWR Berlin (3 years) and Gisma (3 years) need experience too.[26][27][28] German rules also define continuing-education master’s as programmes that, as a rule, need at least one year of qualified work experience.[29] If a school offers you an “MBA” straight after a bachelor’s, check what the degree is called, who awards it and whether the school is state-recognised (see how to check a private school).
For freshers, the management master’s are the real alternative, and they include some of Germany’s highest-ranked business programmes (in the FT Masters in Management 2026, WHU’s is 19th and Mannheim’s 34th):[15][16]
- Mannheim Master in Management (public): €1,500 a semester for non-EU students, 4 semesters, autumn start; needs 36 ECTS in business courses and C1 English (IELTS 7.0). The GMAT is optional but can earn up to 60 ranking points.[23][30]
- University of Cologne MSc Business Administration (public): no tuition, only the semester contribution; the GMAT is optional (up to 32 selection points); apply from mid-April to 15 June. There’s also a double degree with IIM Ahmedabad (deadline 15 May).[24]
- TUM Master in Management, Munich (public, non-EU fees): 4 semesters from October, applications 1 April to 31 May; Indian graduates need a GMAT at the 65th percentile.[31][32]
- Private business schools: WHU’s MSc in Management (€41,200 for 21 months; at least 12 weeks of business practice and at most 2 years’ experience), Frankfurt School’s Master in Management (€35,500 plus €600 enrolment) and HHL’s MSc (€38,500, at least 3 months of practical experience).[33][34][35]
Commerce, business and engineering graduates applying to any of these need the dMAT for APS from the summer 2027 intake.

Accreditation as shown on each school’s own pages; WHU also holds FIBAA system accreditation. In the QS Global MBA 2027 (September 2026), Mannheim is 38th, Frankfurt School 53rd and WHU 58th.[18][19][20]
For freshers, the FT Masters in Management 2026 (September 2026) ranks WHU’s MSc 19th worldwide and first in Germany, the University of Mannheim’s MMM 34th and second in Germany, and Frankfurt School 46th and sixth in Germany.[15][16][17]
Lower-cost MBAs: public universities and state-recognised private universities
| Programme | Type | Tuition | Work experience | Recognition / accreditation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pforzheim University, MBA International Management | Public | €4,600 a semester + €207 registration (may rise slightly for 2027/28); 21 months, or 16 for business graduates starting in March | 2 years | AACSB[26] |
| HWR Berlin, Berlin MBA | Public | €19,900 in total, 15 months; 25 places | 3 years | Accreditation Council, AMBA, FIBAA[27][42] |
| Gisma University of Applied Sciences, Global MBA (Potsdam) | Private, state-recognised | €22,500, 12 months; starts January, April, July or October | 3 years | Accreditation Council seal; AMBA[28] |
| SRH University, MBA General Management | Private, state-recognised | From €7,900 a semester (non-EU), 3 semesters | Check the programme page | System-accredited[43] |
| IU International University, MBA International Management on campus (Cologne) | Private, state-accredited | €14,749–15,050 (discounted from €17,500) + €1,500 registration, 18 months | Check the programme page | Check accreditation on the programme page[44] |
We name these schools as examples of price and recognition, not as recommendations. Some private schools fund our free counselling; we tell you which ones when we counsel you, and it never decides your shortlist. TUM offers only part-time Executive MBAs (€42,900), not a full-time MBA.[45]
How to check a private business school before you pay
- State recognition. The school should be a state-recognised university (staatlich anerkannt). Hochschulkompass, run by the German Rectors’ Conference, lists recognised institutions.
- Who awards the degree. Some programmes taught in Germany award a foreign university’s degree. That can be fine, but ask how it is recognised in Germany and in India before you enrol.
- Full-time, on campus. The student visa is for a full-time, in-person degree programme at a German university.[6]
- Accreditation. Look for programme or system accreditation by the German Accreditation Council (often via FIBAA, ACQUIN or ZEvA), and for the international labels AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA.
- The real total. Add registration, enrolment and semester fees to the tuition, and remember that for any programme that charges tuition the visa needs proof that your first year’s tuition is covered.[7]

Answer four questions. You’ll see the programmes on this page that fit, the ones that don’t yet (and why), what each costs in rupees and whether you need the dMAT.
Programmes and rules as published by the schools, checked on 12 October 2026. Tuition in rupees at ₹108 = €1; add living costs of about €992 a month (₹1.07 lakh), the blocked-account rate. Always confirm on the programme page before you apply.

Tuition is the big number, but you also need living costs for every month of the programme. The German Missions in India ask students to show €11,904 a year in a blocked account, released at €992 a month, so we use €992 a month as the living-cost estimate below.[6] Big cities such as Munich and Frankfurt usually cost more.
| Programme | Length | Tuition | Living | Total | ≈ in ₹ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ESMT Berlin MBA (January 2028) | 15 months | €51,000 | €14,880 | €65,880 | ₹71.2 lakh |
| Mannheim or WHU MBA | 12 months | €49,500 | €11,904 | €61,404 | ₹66.3 lakh |
| HHL Leipzig MBA | 15 months | €43,500 | €14,880 | €58,380 | ₹63.1 lakh |
| Frankfurt School MBA | 12 months | €42,600 | €11,904 | €54,504 | ₹58.9 lakh |
| HWR Berlin MBA (public) | 15 months | €19,900 | €14,880 | €34,780 | ₹37.6 lakh |
| Gisma Global MBA | 12 months | €22,500 | €11,904 | €34,404 | ₹37.2 lakh |
| Mannheim Master in Management (public) | 24 months | €6,000 | €23,808 | €29,808 | ₹32.2 lakh |
| Cologne MSc Business Administration (public) | 24 months | €0 | €23,808 | €23,808 | ₹25.7 lakh |
Tuition as published by each school (Frankfurt School includes the €600 enrolment fee).[21][10][38][3][13][42][28][23][24] Not included: application fees (€150 at Mannheim, €100 at ESMT), semester contributions at public universities, health insurance beyond the living estimate, flights, APS (₹18,000), the dMAT (€150) and the visa fee (₹8,300).[46][47] Rupee figures use ₹108 = €1.[48]
Five ways to bring the cost down
- Apply in the first round. Early-bird discounts are large: €6,000 at Frankfurt School and HHL, €5,000 at WHU and €3,000 at Mannheim for applications by 30 November 2026 (details in scholarships).
- Consider a public option. Pforzheim (€4,600 a semester) and HWR Berlin (€19,900 in total) charge far less than the ranked private schools, and the public management master’s cost little or nothing.
- Pick a cheaper city. Living costs vary more than people expect: see our city-by-city cost guide.
- Learn German early. Mannheim gives a €2,000 bonus to MBA students with German at B1 or higher.[10]
- Plan the loan around the visa. For any programme that charges tuition, the visa needs proof that your first year’s tuition is covered (a payment confirmation, an education loan or an extra deposit) as well as the blocked account, so arrange education loan support early.[7]
GMAT and GRE for MBA in Germany: which schools require them?
German schools vary widely. Some require a test, some treat it as one way to qualify, and some don’t ask for one at all.
| Programme | Test rule |
|---|---|
| Mannheim Full-Time MBA | GMAT or GRE required; the FAQ says it can’t be waived. Mannheim names 600 on the classic GMAT or 565 on the GMAT Focus Edition.[25][10] |
| ESMT Full-time MBA | A test is required: the ESMT Business Admissions Test, GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment. No minimum published.[11] |
| HHL Full-time MBA | GMAT, GRE or the HHL entry test required.[3] |
| WHU Full-Time MBA | Not strictly required: a GMAT, GRE, Executive Assessment or WHU test score is one of five ways to show you fit (others include a business degree with 3 years’ experience).[12] |
| Frankfurt School Full-time MBA | GMAT “preferred”; the school’s own admission test is an alternative, and waivers exist (for example a PhD or CFA Level II).[13] |
| Pforzheim MBA (public) | GMAT 550+ (Focus 515+) expected; a waiver is possible with a very good grade.[26] |
| HWR Berlin MBA (public) | GMAT strongly recommended for non-EU applicants.[27] |
| Gisma Global MBA | No GMAT required.[28] |
| Mannheim Master in Management | Optional, but worth up to 60 ranking points (from 555 on the GMAT Focus Edition for 1 point to 685 for 60).[30] |
| Cologne MSc Business Administration | Optional, worth up to 32 selection points; no points below the 36th percentile.[24] |
| TUM Master in Management | GMAT at the 65th percentile or higher for applicants with an Indian degree.[32] |
| WHU MSc in Management | GMAT 555, GRE 158/158 or GTEBS 102; you can apply first and send the score by 31 May 2027.[4] |
The GMAT doesn’t replace the dMAT. The dMAT is part of the APS process, not a school’s admission test, and APS India lists no exemption for GMAT holders. If your bachelor’s is in engineering, commerce or business, plan for both. We run a dMAT preparation course, and GMAT and GRE coaching timed around your application round.
APS and the dMAT: the two India-specific steps
Full guides: APS certificate for Germany · dMAT test: who needs it and how to prepare →
APS certificate. The German Missions in India say the APS certificate is almost always required for a student visa with an Indian degree, and business schools ask for it too: Mannheim and WHU set earlier deadlines for applicants who still need it.[6][10][12] The fee is ₹18,000 and APS India gives no fixed processing time; ESMT warns the steps can take up to six months, and the dMAT now comes first. Start at least 4–6 months before your first deadline.[46][11] Our APS service checks your document set before you pay and courier it.
dMAT. From the summer 2027 intake, applicants whose previous degree is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management need the dMAT (€150, run by g.a.s.t.) before APS India issues the certificate. You’re exempt if you registered for APS before 29 June 2026 (even if you ship your documents later), already hold an APS certificate, or join an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university-partnership programme.[5][49]
MBA admission in Germany: documents, rounds and deadlines
What you’ll need
- A recognised bachelor’s degree and transcripts.
- Full-time work experience after the degree (2–3 years at most MBAs).
- English: IELTS 7.0 at Mannheim, WHU, ESMT and Frankfurt School, or TOEFL on the new 1–6 scale (4.5–5.5).[10][12][11][13] Our IELTS coaching aims at that 7.0.
- A test score where the school requires one (see the GMAT table).
- A business CV, plus the essays, references and interviews each school asks for: Mannheim wants a one-page motivation letter, two references and interviews; ESMT three essays, two professional recommendations and an interview; WHU an essay, one recommendation and an interview.[10][11][12] Our CV service, essay and SOP service and LOR service cover each piece.
- For Indian degrees: the APS certificate and, if your field is affected, the dMAT.[10]

MBA scholarships, early-bird discounts and education loans
German business schools fund students mainly through early-bird discounts and their own scholarships. These are the published offers:
- Mannheim Full-Time MBA: €3,000 off if you apply by 30 November and €1,000 by 30 April; a €2,000 bonus for German at B1 or higher; scholarships of up to €6,000, and a need-based Distinguished Talent award of up to €9,500.[10]
- WHU Full-Time MBA: early-bird discounts of €5,000 by 30 November, €4,000 by 31 January and €3,000 by 31 March (the €6,000 tier closed on 30 September), individual partial scholarships, and a €10,000 e-fellows scholarship.[38]

Most Indian MBA students still need an education loan for part of the tuition and the blocked account. Lenders in India look at the school, your co-applicant and collateral; our loan support helps you compare offers and time the payout for the visa.

Time to find a job. After graduating you can get a residence permit for up to 18 months to look for qualified work, and you may take any job while you search. It can’t be extended.[8]
EU Blue Card. In 2026 the salary threshold is €50,700 a year, or €45,934.20 in shortage occupations and for graduates within three years of finishing their degree.[9]
What schools report about their graduates
| Programme | Employment | Salary |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt School Full-time MBA (class of 2025) | 81% employed within 3 months | Not published on the programme page |
| HHL Full-time MBA (employment report 2025) | 91% employed within 6 months; 92% start their career in Germany | Average salary increase of 80% |
| Frankfurt School Master in Management (class of 2025) | 92% employed within 3 months | Average €69,000 including bonus |
| HHL MSc in Management (employment report 2025) | – | Average starting salary €81,500 |
As published by the schools.[13][3][34][35] Mannheim, ESMT and WHU publish no employment rate on the programme pages we checked. Results depend heavily on your field, experience and German.
German still matters. Your MBA may be taught in English, but the Federal Employment Agency says many companies expect at least basic German and “English alone is often not enough”.[56] German at B1 also lets EU Blue Card holders settle after 21 months instead of 27.[57] Start with our live German course before you fly.
Seven mistakes Indian MBA applicants make with Germany
- Applying for an MBA as a fresher. The ranked and public MBAs on this page ask for 2–3 years of full-time work. A Master in Management is the route straight after a bachelor’s.
- Counting internships as experience. Mannheim, for one, counts only full-time work after your first degree.[25]
- Forgetting the dMAT. A strong GMAT doesn’t exempt you. If your degree is in engineering, commerce or business, the dMAT comes before APS from the summer 2027 intake.[5]
- Missing the APS deadline. Several schools close earlier for applicants who still need APS (Mannheim and WHU: 30 April).[10][12]
- Budgeting only for tuition. Living costs for a 15-month programme are about €14,880 on top, and for any programme that charges tuition the visa needs proof that your first year’s tuition is covered.
- Choosing a school without checking recognition. Check state recognition, who awards the degree and that the programme is full-time and on campus.
- Waiting for the last round. The biggest early-bird discounts (up to €6,000) and most places go in the first rounds.

MBA in Germany: frequently asked questions
How much does an MBA in Germany cost for Indian students?
Tuition for a full-time MBA ranges from €4,600 a semester at public Pforzheim University to €49,500 at Mannheim and WHU and €51,000 at ESMT (January 2028 start). With living costs of about €992 a month, a 12-month MBA at a top-ranked school comes to roughly ₹66 lakh, and a lower-cost MBA such as HWR Berlin or Gisma to about ₹37 lakh, at ₹108 = €1.
Is an MBA in Germany free at public universities?
No. The public-university MBAs we checked charge fees: Pforzheim charges €4,600 a semester and HWR Berlin €19,900 in total. What can be tuition-free is a Master in Management or MSc at a public university: the University of Cologne’s MSc Business Administration charges only the semester contribution, and Mannheim’s Master in Management costs €1,500 a semester for non-EU students.
Can I do an MBA in Germany without work experience?
Not at the full-time MBAs we checked: Mannheim, ESMT and Frankfurt School ask for at least 3 years of full-time work after your degree, and WHU and HHL about 2. Freshers should apply for a Master in Management, for example at Mannheim, Cologne, TUM, WHU, Frankfurt School or HHL.
Is the GMAT compulsory for an MBA in Germany?
It depends on the school. Mannheim requires the GMAT or GRE; ESMT and HHL require the GMAT, the GRE or their own test; WHU and Frankfurt School accept other ways to qualify; Gisma doesn’t ask for it. Among management master’s, the GMAT is optional but earns points at Mannheim and Cologne, and TUM requires the 65th percentile from Indian graduates.
Which is the best business school in Germany for an MBA?
By the FT Global MBA 2026, Mannheim Business School is first in Germany (=65th worldwide), followed by WHU (69th), ESMT Berlin (=79th) and Frankfurt School (=92nd). Mannheim also leads Germany in the QS Global MBA 2027 (38th). Mannheim, ESMT and Frankfurt School are triple-accredited (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA). The best school for you also depends on your budget, experience and target industry.
Do I need the dMAT for an MBA in Germany?
Probably, if your bachelor’s is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management. From the summer 2027 intake, APS India issues the APS certificate to these graduates only after the dMAT (€150), and it lists no exemption for a GMAT score. Mannheim Business School asks Indian MBA applicants for the dMAT.
Do I need IELTS for an MBA in Germany?
Yes, or another accepted English test. Mannheim, WHU, ESMT and Frankfurt School ask for IELTS 7.0; on the new TOEFL iBT scale they ask for 4.5 to 5.5. Some schools waive the test in specific cases, but the student visa has its own rules on language proof.
Which is better for Indians: an MBA or a Master in Management in Germany?
With three or more years of experience and a budget of about ₹60–70 lakh, a ranked MBA can make sense. With little or no experience, or a smaller budget, a Master in Management at a public university is usually the stronger choice: it costs far less, admits recent graduates and gives the same 18-month job-search permit.
When should I apply for a September 2027 MBA?
Start now. Mannheim’s first round closes on 30 November 2026, and the largest early-bird discounts still open at Frankfurt School, HHL and WHU end on the same date. Applicants who still need APS should finish by 30 April 2027 at Mannheim and WHU, and Frankfurt School advises Indian applicants to apply by the end of April.
Is there an MBA in Germany with a January intake?
Yes. ESMT Berlin’s full-time MBA starts in January. The January 2027 class closes on 31 October 2026 (with a final round on 15 December if places remain), so most Indian applicants should aim for January 2028. Gisma’s Global MBA starts four times a year, including January.
How much blocked account money do I need for an MBA?
The same as any student: €11,904 for 2026, released at €992 a month. If your programme charges tuition, the German Missions in India also want proof that your first year’s tuition is covered: a payment confirmation, an education loan or an extra deposit.
Can I work in Germany after an MBA?
Yes. Graduates can get up to 18 months to look for a qualified job, and can take any job meanwhile. In 2026 the EU Blue Card threshold is €50,700, or €45,934.20 for recent graduates and shortage occupations. Frankfurt School reports 81% of its 2025 MBA class employed within three months, and HHL 91% of its MBA graduates within six months.
Does TUM offer a full-time MBA?
No. TUM offers part-time Executive MBAs (€42,900) for working professionals. For recent graduates, TUM’s School of Management offers a Master in Management, which asks Indian graduates for a GMAT at the 65th percentile.
Is Yastudy’s MBA counselling really free?

About this guide: who wrote it and how we check the facts
Who wrote it
The Yastudy Germany Desk: the counsellors who prepare Germany master’s and MBA files from our Patna, Noida and Bengaluru offices. They work every day with APS, business-school and university portals and the Consular Services Portal, and with the new dMAT rules.
How we checked the facts
Every figure that changes, including fees, thresholds, dates, rents and rankings, was checked on 12 October 2026 against the business schools’ and universities’ own pages, the Financial Times rankings and official sources (the German Missions in India, APS India, g.a.s.t., Make it in Germany and the Federal Gazette). Key figures link to their sources in the list below.
When we update it
Every quarter (next review: January 2027), and straight away when APS, a German mission or German residence law changes. We’re watching four changes: the Q1 2027 dMAT date, ESMT’s January 2028 deadlines, the 2027 blocked-account amount and the 2027 Blue Card thresholds.
