Where can you learn German in Delhi?

Delhi offers four different ways to learn German. Before you look at our course, it helps to know all of them, because each one suits a different student.

1. Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, Kasturba Gandhi Marg

If you are searching for a "German language course from the embassy", this is most likely the institute you are looking for. It is not run by the German Embassy. The Goethe-Institut, known in India as Max Mueller Bhavan, is Germany's cultural institute. It teaches German from A1 to C2 and also conducts the Goethe exams. The New Delhi institute is at 3, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, about a 10-minute walk from Connaught Place.

On 2 October 2026 its website listed these group courses for adults. A teaching unit is 45 minutes.

CoursePaceModeFee listed
Fast Track Weekday: A1 to B2.27 weeks for each level, Monday to Friday, 25 teaching units a weekOnline and face-to-faceINR 28,500 for each level
Intensive 160: A1 to B2.212 weeks for each level, Monday to Friday, 160 teaching units for each levelOnline and face-to-faceINR 28,500 for each level
Fast Track Weekend: A1 to B2.114 weeks for each level, 2 days a week, 12 teaching units a weekFace-to-faceINR 28,500 for each level
Extensive 160: A1 to B2.220 weekends for each level, about 6 hours a weekOnline and face-to-faceFrom INR 28,500

B2 is taught in two parts, B2.1 and B2.2, and each part is a separate course. Groups have at most 22 participants. The institute's overview page shows group courses from INR 20,900, so check the current courses and fees on the Goethe-Institut New Delhi course page before you decide. Its course brochure also lists face-to-face classes at its second site, Goethe-Institut@Wave One in Noida Sector 18. The institute suits you if you want a classroom, more class hours for each level, or a weekend course.

2. University of Delhi part-time courses

The Department of Germanic and Romance Studies at the University of Delhi lists three part-time courses in German: Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. They are offered in colleges of the university. For the Certificate you need Class 12 with at least 45% marks, and admission is by merit. You apply directly to the college that offers the course. Details are on the department's part-time German page.

These are university courses with their own exams. If your goal is a visa, an Ausbildung or recognition as a nurse, check first which certificate the German side asks for. In most cases it is a Goethe, telc or ÖSD certificate at a stated level.

3. Classroom institutes across the city

Private institutes teach German in many parts of Delhi, from Connaught Place to the west and south of the city. Class hours, batch size and price differ from one institute to the next. Use the ten questions further down this page before you pay any of them, including us.

4. Live online courses

This is where Yastudy fits. Classes are live, with a trainer and a small batch, and you join from home. You save the commute across the city, and you take the exam at Max Mueller Bhavan like everyone else.

Yastudy and the Goethe-Institut, side by side

If you are choosing between these two, compare them point by point. The Goethe-Institut figures are from its course page on 2 October 2026. In both columns the weeks are counted with one course straight after the other. In practice each course starts on fixed dates, so the calendar decides the real timeline.

ExamThe Goethe exam, at the same institutePreparation for the Goethe and telc exams. You book the exam with the Goethe-Institut.

Read the table honestly. The Goethe-Institut gives you more hours in class for each level, a classroom, and weekend courses. Its Fast Track Weekday course is as intensive as ours, with more class hours and a larger group. Our course is shorter and costs less in total because each level has fewer class hours and you are expected to do about two hours of your own practice every weekday. A single A1 or A2 level with us costs more for each class hour than a Goethe-Institut course, and the combos cost less. If you need B1 or B2 within months and can give German five hours a day, our course is built for that. If you want more class hours, a classroom or a weekend course, the Goethe-Institut will serve you better.

How Yastudy German classes work for students in Delhi

You join a live class from home, and a trainer teaches the batch in real time. You are asked questions, you speak German, and you are corrected. It is a class, not a set of recorded videos.

  • Three hours of live class a day, Monday to Friday, and about two more hours of homework and practice.
  • 10 to 12 students in a batch at most, with speaking practice in every class.
  • Every class is recorded, so a missed class or a dropped connection does not leave a gap.
  • Doubts on WhatsApp between classes.
  • A mock test every week, so that you know the exam pattern before exam day.
  • Yastudy's own course material. At A1 this is a Kursbuch (course book) with 12 lessons and an Arbeitsbuch (workbook), with an exam task in every lesson.

The batch is the same for every city, so a student in Dwarka, a student in Noida and a student in Pune sit in the same class. The full course is on the main German language course page.

Your trainer

Raj studied at TU Munich in a German-taught program. He teaches the German you will actually need in Germany, and he knows what the route from India to Germany looks like.

What a weekday looks like

Part of the dayTimeWhat you do
Live class3 hoursNew material with your trainer, then speaking practice in a small group
Your own practiceAbout 2 hoursHomework, new words, and the recording if you need to revise
Every weekOne mock testYou see where you stand before the exam

That is about 5 hours of German on every weekday. The pace only works if you attend every class and practise daily. If you can study only at the weekend, this course will not suit you.

Why online makes sense in Delhi

If your classroom is on the other side of the city, the commute can take as long as the daily practice this course needs. Online, that time goes into German. What you give up is the classroom itself, so you need a quiet place at home, a device with a camera and a microphone, earphones, and a steady connection with mobile data as a backup.

See a class before you decide. We send a 15-minute recorded class on WhatsApp, with no payment needed. Or join a live class on Zoom for ₹199.

Which German level do you need?

Your goal decides the level. These are the usual requirements, and the week by which this course reaches each one.

Some employers, schools and German states ask for more, and rules change, so check the official page for your case. The level table on the main German page names the official sources for the visa and recognition rows.

Working professionals in Delhi NCR

If you work in Gurugram, Noida or Delhi and are looking at the Opportunity Card, German is one part of your points you can still improve. On the points route you need German A1 or English B2 at minimum, and German A2, B1 and B2 then add 1, 2 and 3 points. Graduates whose degree is fully recognised in Germany do not need the points. Be honest about time, though: this course needs about 5 hours on every weekday, which is hard to combine with a full-time job. Read the Opportunity Card guide first.

College students

If you are at a Delhi college and plan a degree in Germany, the level depends on the language of the program. Many master's programs are taught in English. For a bachelor's degree, many students with an Indian Class 12 certificate go through a Studienkolleg first, and its entrance test needs B1 to B2. Read Bachelor's in Germany from India.

If you already know some German

You do not have to start from A1. If you have finished A1 elsewhere, join the A2 batch: the A2 to B1 combo is ₹23,500 and A2 to B2 is ₹33,500. Not sure of your level? Message us on WhatsApp and we will check it with you.

The ₹199 live class

You pay ₹199 to confirm your seat and join a live class on Zoom, about 30 minutes plus questions and answers. You speak German and get corrected. If you enrol within 7 days of the class, the ₹199 comes off your fee. Otherwise it is not refunded.

German batch timings

Goethe exam in Delhi: where and how

Students in Delhi have one clear advantage: the exam centre is in their own city. The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi conducts German exams for all levels from A1 to C2.

About a 10-minute walk from Connaught Place. Metro stations named by the institute: Janpath, Barakhamba Road, Rajiv Chowk and Shivaji Stadium.
Contact and opening hours on the institute's website

On 2 October 2026 the Goethe-Institut India listed A1 exam dates for New Delhi and also for Noida, so students in east Delhi and Noida have a second place to choose from.

Booking the exam

  1. Book on the Goethe-Institut India website. You choose the level, the city and a date, sign in to your Mein Goethe.de account and pay online.
  2. Enter your name exactly as in your passport. The certificate is issued from these details.
  3. Read the invitation. It gives the place and the reporting time. At A1 and A2 the rules allow the speaking exam to be held on a different day, up to 14 days from the written exam.
  4. Carry your passport, in the original. The Goethe-Institut India accepts only a valid passport as ID for its language exams.
  5. Book only on the Goethe-Institut's own website. The institute warns against fraudulent offers that promise access to exams or certificates.

On exam day

Reach the venue named in your invitation before the reporting time. Mobile phones, smartwatches, dictionaries and notes are not allowed in the exam room. You get your result in your Mein Goethe.de account, and the certificate is downloaded from the same account.

These are the fees listed by the Goethe-Institut India on 2 October 2026. Check the current fees and dates on the Goethe-Institut India exam pages before you book.

Which exams to take

You do not have to sit an exam after every level. The Goethe-Institut does not ask for a lower certificate before a higher exam. Take the exam your goal asks for: A1 for a spouse visa, B1 for Ausbildung, B2 for nursing. At B1 and B2 the exam has four modules, which you can take together or one at a time. Living in Delhi, you can retake a single module without planning a trip.

telc and ÖSD exams

telc and ÖSD are separate exam providers with their own licensed centres. The German Missions in India accept their A1 certificates for a spouse visa, along with the Goethe certificate. If you plan to take one of them, find a licensed centre and a date on the provider's own website first.

For the A1 paper in detail, with sample tasks, marks and preparation, read the Goethe A1 exam guide.

After the certificate: visa and APS in Delhi

Two more offices on the route to Germany are based in Delhi. You deal with both of them mostly online.

The German Embassy

The German Embassy in New Delhi is at No. 6/50G, Shanti Path, Chanakyapuri. It decides on visa applications. For German courses and exams, the German Missions' own website points to the Goethe-Institut. The German Missions state that most national visas can be applied for online through the Consular Service Portal, and that the others need an appointment through the service provider VFS. Start from the visa pages of the German Missions in India.

A note for spouse visa applicants. Not every spouse needs a German certificate. The German Missions in India say it is mandatory for almost everyone joining a German citizen, and for most spouses of people in Germany who do not hold a visa or residence permit for highly skilled work. They also state that the A1 exam cannot have taken place more than one year ago, so take the exam when your application is in sight.

The APS certificate, for students

If you are going to Germany for a degree, you will meet the APS certificate. APS India verifies academic documents issued by Indian institutions, and its certificate is part of the documents generally required in the German student visa procedure. APS India is part of the Science Section of the German Embassy New Delhi. You register online, pay the fee and send your documents by courier or post. Start it early, because it runs alongside your German course, not after it. For selected master's subjects APS India also asks for a test called dMAT, which our dMAT exam guide explains. Yastudy has a page on the APS certificate for Germany.

Help from Yastudy's study-abroad team

Students on the A1 to B2 combo get a Germany roadmap session, plus admission or Ausbildung guidance. Yastudy also has Delhi pages for a bachelor's degree in Germany and for its other study-abroad services in Delhi.

Study plans for students in Delhi

These plans count class time at 3 hours a day, Monday to Friday, with full attendance and daily practice. The exam date depends on what the exam centre has open.

Admission and Ausbildung guidance from the Yastudy study-abroad team comes with the A1 to B2 combo, not with the A1 to B1 combo.

If five hours a day is too much

Some students cannot give German five hours on every weekday, and it is better to say so now. In that case this intensive course is the wrong choice. Look at the weekend and longer courses at the Goethe-Institut, or at a part-time university course, and come back to us for B1 or B2 when you can study full-time.

Delhi NCR and our Noida office

Because the class is online, your address in Delhi changes nothing. You can join from South Delhi, Dwarka, Janakpuri, Rohini, Pitampura, Mukherjee Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Karol Bagh or Connaught Place, and from the rest of the NCR: Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.

Yastudy has no classroom or office in Delhi itself. The nearest office is in Noida, and you can meet a counsellor there to talk through your level and your plan for Germany.

Mistakes to avoid when you choose a German course in Delhi

  • Choosing the nearest institute. A short commute is a good reason only after the class hours, the batch size and the exam preparation are right.
  • Counting months, not hours. "A1 in two months" says nothing until you know how many class hours it is.
  • Expecting the embassy to teach German. The Embassy decides on visas. Courses and exams are at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan.
  • Paying for "placement". A German certificate does not come with a job. Ask exactly what the institute will do, and get it in writing. At Yastudy the A1 to B2 combo includes a Germany roadmap session and admission or Ausbildung guidance, and that is all we promise.
  • Taking a certificate that the German side does not ask for. Visa checklists and employers usually name the Goethe, telc or ÖSD certificate at a stated level.
  • Stopping at A1 or A2 when your goal needs more. Ausbildung normally needs B1 and nursing needs B2.
  • Leaving the passport and the APS certificate for later. The exam needs a passport, and a student visa generally needs the APS certificate. Both take time.
  • Skipping the speaking practice. Every Goethe exam from A1 to B2 has a speaking part, and it cannot be prepared by reading alone.

Ten questions to ask any German institute in Delhi

  1. How many class hours does each level have?
  2. How many students are in a batch?
  3. Who teaches the class, and where did the trainer study?
  4. Will I speak in every class?
  5. Are the classes recorded, and what happens if I miss one?
  6. Which exam do you prepare me for: Goethe, telc or ÖSD?
  7. How often will I write a mock test?
  8. What happens if I don't clear the exam?
  9. Is the exam fee part of the course fee? Usually it is not, because you pay it to the exam centre.
  10. What exactly do you mean by "placement" or "guidance", and is it in writing?

Ask us the same ten questions. The answers are on this page.

Your first German sentences, from Delhi

The first A1 lesson is about greetings and introducing yourself. This is the kind of introduction you build in the first days of the course, and it is also the first task of the A1 speaking exam.

Introducing yourself

Guten Tag! Ich heiße Neha Verma. Ich komme aus Indien und wohne in Delhi. Ich bin 23 Jahre alt. Ich spreche Hindi und Englisch, und ich lerne Deutsch. Ich arbeite in Gurugram.

Hello! My name is Neha Verma. I come from India and live in Delhi. I am 23 years old. I speak Hindi and English, and I am learning German. I work in Gurugram.

GermanEnglish

Wo wohnst du?Where do you live?
Ich wohne in Dwarka.I live in Dwarka.

Two things to notice. Every German noun starts with a capital letter: Metro, Deutsch, Tag. And the verb changes with the person: ich wohne, du wohnst. Both are part of the German A1 syllabus.
