CV for masters in Germany: the short version
German universities, scholarship panels and the visa office all read your CV as a record: what you did, when, in order, with no unexplained gaps. A two-page CV in table form, newest entries first, with month-and-year dates, works almost everywhere. Use the Europass format where it's asked for or recommended.
Key takeaways
- Table form, newest first. Germany's official Make it in Germany portal says a CV "typically has the format of a table", listed "antichronologically".[1] The German Missions in India want your CV "in table form".[2]
- Europass where asked. TU Dresden's Tropical Forestry master's requires a two-page, hand-signed Europass CV;[3] Stuttgart's WASTE recommends the Europass template.[4] DAAD EPOS applicants at TU Berlin must use it.[5]
- One or two pages. TUM's checklist for Computational Science and Engineering asks for "one or two pages".[6]
- Sign and date it when asked. TU Berlin Urban Management rejects unsigned documents that need a signature.[5]
- Explain every gap. IHK Pfalz, a regional chamber of commerce, advises giving the reason for any gap briefly.[7]
- Not for APS. APS India's checklist for graduates doesn't include a CV.[8]
Europass CV, German tabular CV or Indian resume: which one?
| Format | What it is | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Europass CV | The EU's free online CV builder: you fill a Europass profile and pick a template; it downloads as PDF[9][10] | Programmes and DAAD schemes that ask for or recommend Europass |
| German tabular CV (tabellarischer Lebenslauf) | A table of dates and entries, most recent first, 1–2 pages, often dated and signed at the end[11] | Most university applications, and the visa ("in table form") |
| Indian or US-style resume | One page of achievements, often with an objective statement and no full timeline | Not ideal for Germany: it hides dates and gaps that German readers look for |
Where you'll need a CV
| Stage | CV needed? | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| APS certificate | No | Not on APS India's graduate checklist[8] |
| University application | Usually | Each programme sets the format; Mannheim wants "a most recent" CV "in tabular form"[12] |
| DAAD EPOS scholarships | Yes, at the programmes we checked | Europass format (mandatory at TU Berlin Urban Management and in Stuttgart WASTE's 2026 EPOS manual)[5][13] |
| Student visa | Yes | "CV in English or German in table form, listing all previous training, qualifications and activities"[2] |
CV rules at German universities
Most programmes just list "CV". These are the ones that state their rules. Where your programme says nothing, use the tabular format below in English, one or two pages.
| University / programme | Rule |
|---|---|
| TUM, Computational Science and Engineering M.Sc. (School of CIT checklist) | CV of one or two pages[6] |
| University of Mannheim | A most recent CV in tabular form; foreign documents only in German or English[12] |
| TU Dresden, Tropical Forestry and Management M.Sc. | Europass format, in English, two pages, hand-signed, with a recent date[3] |
| TU Dresden, LL.M. Intellectual Property Law | In English, in tabular form, with photo; Europass preferred[14] |
| University of Stuttgart, WASTE M.Sc. | Europass template recommended; PDF only. It has suspended its DAAD EPOS scholarship from winter 2027/28[4][15] |
| TU Berlin, Urban Management M.Sc. | Hand-signed; Europass mandatory for DAAD scholarship applicants[5] |
| University of Göttingen | In German or English, with a meaningful account of your education[16] |
| Hochschule Rhein-Waal | No CV on the general master's document list (individual programmes may differ)[17] |
The CV goes in with your SOP for MS in Germany and your letters of recommendation, and committees compare them, so every date, grade and project must match across all three.
How to make a Europass CV: step by step
- Create a free Europass profileThe Europass CV builder works through your profile: "You will first have to create your Europass profile with information on your education, training, work experience and skills."[9] It's free, from the European Commission.[18]
- Fill in your profile onceEducation, work, projects, languages and skills. You can then pick what to include in each CV.[19]
- Choose a templatePick a layout from the available templates.[10] Use a plain one for universities.
- Rate your languages with the CEFR gridEuropass publishes the CEFR self-assessment grid: listening, reading, spoken interaction, spoken production and writing, each from A1 to C2.[20] Match it to your certificates (for example IELTS 6.5 ≈ B2). See our IELTS guide for the conversion.
- Download as PDFYou can save your Europass CV as a PDF.[10] Without an account, guest data is kept only for 48 hours after your last visit, so register if you'll edit it again.[10]
- Trim, sign and dateKeep it to two pages, check every date against your transcripts, and add a signature and date where the programme asks for one.
What to put in a CV for German universities
| Section | What to write | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Personal details | Name as in your passport, email, phone, city and country, LinkedIn if useful | Leave out your parents' details, as KIT's career service advises[21] |
| Education | Degree, university, MM/YYYY–MM/YYYY, CGPA or percentage, final project title | Newest first. Add Class 12 and 10 with board and marks. |
| Projects and thesis | Title, your role, tools, result | The bridge between your CV and your SOP. |
| Work and internships | Role, organisation, city, dates, 2–3 lines of tasks and results | Include paid internships and full-time jobs with exact months. |
| Skills | Technical skills, software, programming languages | Only what you could be asked about. |
| Languages | English (IELTS 7.0 / C1), German (A1 in progress), Hindi (native) | Use CEFR levels from the self-assessment grid Europass publishes.[20] |
| Tests and certificates | IELTS, dMAT, GRE, APS certificate, relevant courses | Give dates and scores. |
| Place, date, signature | At the end | Expected in German CVs; LMU's career service lists date and signature at the end.[11] |
- Photo: optional. Make it in Germany says applicants are "often expected" to include one, with big differences between industries;[1] the IHK says you're not obliged to.[7] LMU's career service advises no photo on English-language CVs.[11] For universities, include one only if the programme asks (TU Dresden's LL.M. does).[14]
- Length: LMU's career service says 1 to a maximum of 2 pages.[11]
- Dates: one format throughout, such as MM/YYYY.[21]
Free CV timeline and gap checker
Find the gaps before a visa officer does
Enter your education, jobs, internships and courses with months. You'll get your timeline in German order (newest first, MM/YYYY), plus every gap longer than three months, so you can explain it in your CV. The example rows show how; replace them with yours. Nothing is saved or sent.
Short breaks between school, college and a first job (up to three months) are normal and aren't flagged.
How to show gaps in your CV for Germany
The German Missions ask for a CV listing "all previous training, qualifications and activities".[2] A missing year invites questions at the visa interview. IHK Pfalz, a regional chamber of commerce, advises giving the reason for any gap briefly.[7] Give each gap its own line, with dates:
| Situation | CV line (example) |
|---|---|
| Exam preparation | 07/2023 – 01/2024 · Preparation for GATE and IELTS (IELTS Academic 7.0, 12/2023) |
| Family reasons | 08/2022 – 03/2023 · Family responsibilities (care for a family member) |
| Course or self-study | 02/2024 – 06/2024 · Online course in data analysis (assessed project, certificate) |
| Job search | 07/2023 – 10/2023 · Job search; freelance tutoring in mathematics |
| Preparing for Germany | 11/2025 – present · German A1 course; APS and dMAT preparation |
Be truthful: your CV is checked against your transcripts, experience letters and visa documents. Use the same dates in your visa application.
10 CV mistakes Indian students make for Germany
- A one-page Indian resume with no dates or timeline.
- Oldest entries first instead of newest first.
- Unexplained gaps of six months or more.
- Mixed date formats ("June 2023", "07/23", "2023").
- Father's name, religion, marital status and full address copied from an Indian biodata.
- Three or four pages for a fresh graduate.
- No grades for your degree, Class 12 and Class 10.
- Languages rated "fluent" or "good" instead of CEFR levels.

CV for masters in Germany: 14 questions Indian students ask
Format
Is a Europass CV required for German universities?
Only by some programmes. TU Dresden's Tropical Forestry master's requires it, Stuttgart's WASTE recommends it, and DAAD EPOS applicants at TU Berlin's Urban Management must use it. Most others accept any clear tabular CV.
What is the best CV format for masters in Germany?
A tabular CV in English: entries in a table with month-and-year dates, newest first, one or two pages, with grades and CEFR language levels, ending with place, date and signature.
How long should a CV be for German universities?
One or two pages. TUM's Computational Science and Engineering checklist asks for one or two pages, and LMU's career service says a maximum of two.
Should I add a photo to my CV for Germany?
It's optional for most universities; add one only if the programme asks (TU Dresden's LL.M. does). LMU's career service advises no photo on English-language CVs. For jobs in Germany, a photo is common but not required.
Do I need to sign my CV?
If the programme or scholarship asks, yes: TU Berlin's Urban Management master's wants a hand-signed CV. Signing and dating it is normal in Germany anyway.
Should my CV be in English or German?
English for English-taught programmes. Universities such as Mannheim and Göttingen accept English or German; the German Missions accept a CV in either.

What should I include in my CV for MS in Germany?

Give it its own line with dates and what you did: exam preparation, a course, work, family responsibilities. Use the same dates in your visa application.
Should I include Class 10 and 12 in my CV?
Yes, with the board, school, years and marks. German readers expect a complete education history.
