Where can you learn German in Mumbai?
Mumbai has several routes to German. You can take a classroom course at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, join a course at another language institute, or study live online. Each suits a different student.
| Option | Choose it if | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom course at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai | You want a campus and a fixed timetable, and can travel to it | Check its website for current courses, fees and batch sizes. We do not quote them here. |
| Other institutes in Mumbai | You want a classroom close to home | Ask for the fee in writing, the batch size, the hours per level and what happens if you do not clear the exam. |
| Yastudy live online | You want daily live classes without commuting, a published fee list and combos | You attend on a screen and travel only for your exam. It is not for weekend-only learners. |
Questions to ask any German course in Mumbai
- How many class hours does each level have, and how many weeks does it take?
- What is the batch size, and will I speak in every class?
- What is the total fee, and is the exam fee included? The Goethe exam fee is always paid to the Goethe-Institut or the exam centre.
- What happens if I do not clear the exam?
- Are classes recorded, and can I ask doubts between classes?
Our full course, with batch timings, is on the German course page.
How Yastudy's German classes work for students in Mumbai
Yastudy teaches German live online, so you attend from Mumbai and travel only for your exam. In a city where commuting takes a large part of the day, online classes save the travel time. A batch has 10 to 12 students, and classes run for 3 hours a day, Monday to Friday. Every class is recorded, you can send doubts on WhatsApp between classes, and a mock test every week shows where you stand. The levels run from A1 to B2 in about 21 weeks, which is 310 hours of live class.
Try before you pay
You can watch a real class first (we send the recorded class on WhatsApp without payment), or join a live class for ₹199. The ₹199 comes off your fee if you enrol within 7 days of the class.
Repeat the level if you do not clear the exam
If you do not clear your Goethe or telc exam, you repeat that level's batch without paying again. You need at least 80% attendance, and you must take the exam within 3 months of finishing the level.
It will not suit you if you can only study on weekends. The course is built for students who can give about 5 hours a day for a few months: 3 hours of live class and about 2 hours of practice. Recordings help you catch up on a missed class, but the pace only works with regular attendance.
German levels A1 to B2: what you can do at each one
These descriptions follow the level descriptions on telc's own exam pages. The hours and weeks are Yastudy's, at 3 hours of class a day, Monday to Friday.

| B1 | Communicate in a simple and coherent way in daily life, at work and when travelling. Report experiences, describe goals and give reasons for opinions. | 100 | Week 13 |
| B2 | Communicate spontaneously and fluently, understand the main ideas of complex texts and explain your viewpoint on current issues. | 120 | Week 21 |

Goethe, telc and ÖSD exams for Mumbai students
Goethe-Institut Mumbai
The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai is one of the Goethe exam centres in India. On 2 October 2026 the Goethe-Institut India exam page listed A1 exam dates in Mumbai, together with New Delhi, Noida, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Trichy and Phagwara (LPU). The Mumbai exam page also lists the A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 exams and the Goethe-Test PRO. Look at the list of dates, choose yours and book online. The exam is held in person at an exam centre, so there is no exam from home.
Book only on the Goethe-Institut's website. The institute warns about fraudulent offers that promise access to exams or certificates, and says that places and dates that are not listed on its website are not valid.
Goethe exam fees
These are the external fees, including 18% GST, as listed by the Goethe-Institut India (A1 on 2 October 2026, the others on its Pune and New Delhi registration pages on 4 October 2026).
| Exam | Fee (external) | Per module |
|---|---|---|
| A1: Start Deutsch 1 | ₹9,400 | Repeated as a whole exam |
| A2 | ₹10,600 | Check the exam page |
| B1 | ₹18,800 | ₹4,700 |
| B2 | ₹21,200 | ₹5,300 |
The Goethe-Institut also lists a lower “internal” fee, which we understand is for its own course students. Yastudy students pay the external fee. See Goethe exam fees in India for C1, modules and extra costs.
telc and other providers
telc exams in India run through licensed partner centres, and the list changes. A third-party list shows the Department of German at the University of Mumbai as a telc centre. We could not confirm that on telc's own page, so check telc's official finder, and ask the centre for its dates, fee and partial-exam rules. See our telc exam guide for India. ÖSD exams also run in India through partner centres, so ask the office or employer which providers it accepts before you book.
When to book
Choose your exam date when you start your course, for about four to six weeks after your batch begins, and leave time for a retake. If an office wants a recent certificate, count back from your application date.
Goethe or telc: which should a student in Mumbai choose?
For most goals, an office accepts more than one provider. The best choice is the one your office accepts that you can book soonest. In Mumbai you can sit the Goethe exam at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai, and a third-party list shows a possible telc centre at the University of Mumbai.
| Question | Goethe-Institut | telc |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sit it | Mainly the Goethe-Institut's own centres and its partner centres | Licensed partner centres, a list that changes |
| Fee | One published external fee for each exam | Set by each centre. Ask for a written fee list. |
| B1 and B2 retakes | Fee per module is listed (B1 ₹4,700, B2 ₹5,300) | Partial exam possible at B2, and centres state it for B1 |
| B2 written time | Listening 40, reading 65, writing 75 minutes | About 140 minutes in total, with listening of about 20 minutes |
| B2 speaking | Pair exam, 15 minutes | Pair exam, about 15 minutes, with 20 minutes of preparation |
| A1 for a spouse visa | Start Deutsch 1 is listed by the German Missions in India | Start Deutsch 1 of telc GmbH is listed by the German Missions in India |
Our course prepares you for both. The details of each exam are in our Goethe A1 exam guide and our telc exam guide.
Planning an exam trip from Mumbai
If you live in Mumbai or Navi Mumbai, the Mumbai centre may need only a local journey. Students from Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh or Chhattisgarh may need to travel, so plan the trip as soon as you book.
- Book the exam first, then plan travel and any night's stay. Keep the booking confirmation and your payment receipt.
- Check your passport. The Goethe-Institut asks for a valid passport in the original on exam day, and your name must match your booking.
- Arrive early. Read the invitation for the reporting time and what to bring.
- Keep the whole day free. At some centres the written and oral parts fall on different days or at different times. Ask your centre.
- Save your result. Download your certificate when you pass and keep copies in more than one place.
Visa and the German Consulate General Mumbai
The German Consulate General Mumbai is at Hoechst House, 10th Floor, 193 Backbay Reclamation, Nariman Point, Mumbai 400021. The Federal Foreign Office and the German Missions in India say its consular district covers Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. If you live in one of those places, this is your competent mission.
- Appointments. The missions ask visitors to book an appointment before they come. How to book a visa appointment is explained on the German Missions in India visa page, and the rules differ by visa type.
- Spouse visa. The German Missions in India ask for a current recognised A1 certificate when one is required. They list “Start Deutsch 1” of the Goethe-Institut or of telc GmbH and “Grundstufe Deutsch 1” of the ÖSD, and the exam cannot have taken place more than one year ago. A certificate is not always necessary. See how long a Goethe certificate is valid.
- Vocational training. You apply online on the Federal Foreign Office's Consular Services Portal and then follow your mission's appointment and document checklist. See German for Ausbildung for the B1 requirement and the 2026 money figures.
- Nursing. Recognition as a nurse needs B2. See German for nurses for the routes, including the recognition partnership.
- University students. Indian applicants to German universities are usually asked for an APS certificate. Our German in Delhi page explains it.
Ask the consulate, in writing, about anything that is not on its own pages. We are not a visa office, and we cannot guarantee a visa.
Learning German while living in Mumbai or western India
Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane
Because the classes are live online, it makes no difference whether you live in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai or Thane. You join from home, so the time you would spend in transit goes to practice. Plan 3 hours of class and about 2 hours of practice a day, Monday to Friday.
Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh
The Mumbai consulate's district also covers these states, so students there apply to the same mission as Mumbai students. Check the Goethe-Institut's exam pages for the nearest exam city and plan the trip when you book. Pune is one of the Goethe exam cities and is covered on our German in Pune page.
Your goal from Mumbai
- Ausbildung: B1 is normally needed. Start with the A1 to B1 combo (₹29,500). See German for Ausbildung.
- Nursing: recognition needs B2, and Triple Win's Indian placement agreements are with Kerala and Telangana, so nurses from Maharashtra and the rest of the Mumbai district plan other routes. See German for nurses.
- Study or spouse visa: A1 for many spouse visas, and higher levels for study. See the Goethe A1 exam guide and the B2 course.
Our offices are in Patna, Noida and Bangalore. If you would like to meet a counsellor, see German in Noida and German in Bangalore.
Fees and a study plan for Mumbai
Single levels cost A1 ₹14,000, A2 ₹16,000, B1 ₹20,000 and B2 ₹24,000. The combos cost less than buying level by level:
| Combo | Class hours | Fee | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 to B1 | 190 | ₹29,500 | ₹20,500 against ₹50,000 |
| A2 to B1 | 150 | ₹23,500 | ₹12,500 against ₹36,000 |
| A2 to B2 | 270 | ₹33,500 | ₹26,500 against ₹60,000 |
| A1 to B2 | 310 | ₹39,500 | ₹34,500 against ₹74,000 |
The A1 to B2 combo also includes a Germany roadmap session and admission or Ausbildung guidance. Exam fees are paid separately to the exam centre. See Goethe exam fees in India for the Goethe fees, and the fees section of the main page to enrol.
A realistic timeline from Mumbai
- Weeks 1 to 3. A1 live classes. Book your exam date when you start, for about four to six weeks after your batch begins.
- Weeks 4 to 13. A2 and B1, if your goal needs B1. Do one full mock exam each week.
- Weeks 14 to 21. B2, if your goal needs it, such as nursing recognition.
- After each level. Take the exam within 3 months to keep your repeat-level promise, and keep your certificate recent for the office that will receive it.
Mistakes to avoid when you learn German in Mumbai
- Booking the exam through an agent. The Goethe-Institut says to book only on its own website and warns about fraudulent offers.
- Choosing a level from a video instead of asking the office or employer what it needs.
- Taking the exam too early and having a certificate that is too old for a visa office. See certificate validity.
- Skipping mock exams. The full exams are long. Practise under timing.
- Not practising speaking. At B1 and B2 the oral exam is a pair exam. Speak in every class.
- Paying for an “internal” Goethe price. That lower fee is for the institute's own course students.
- Leaving documents for last. Translations, certificates and appointments take time.
