Goethe exam fees in India: A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 costs, modules and extras

Goethe exam fees in India depend on the level and on whether you studied at the Goethe-Institut itself. Candidates who prepare elsewhere, such as Yastudy students, pay the “external” fee: ₹9,400 for A1, ₹10,600 for A2, ₹18,800 for B1 and ₹21,200 for B2, including 18% GST. This guide shows every fee, how module fees work, which extra costs to expect, and how the exam fee fits with the cost of your course.

Checked against the Goethe-Institut India website: A1 on 2 October 2026, and the other levels on its Pune and New Delhi registration pages on 4 October 2026. By the Yastudy German team.

At a glance

These are the facts most readers look for first. Each one is explained in detail further down.

PointWhat to know
A1 fee₹9,400 for Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, including 18% GST.
A2 fee₹10,600 for Goethe-Zertifikat A2.
B1 fee₹18,800 for all four modules, or ₹4,700 for one module.
B2 fee₹21,200 for all four modules, or ₹5,300 for one module.
C1 fee₹24,000 for all four modules, or ₹6,000 for one module, as listed on the Pune and New Delhi pages.
Internal or externalThe Goethe-Institut lists a lower "internal" fee, which we understand is for its own course students. Yastudy students pay the external fee.
Same in every cityThe Pune and New Delhi pages list the same external fees. Our A1 guide found the same A1 fee for every city and date.
Where you payOnline, to the Goethe-Institut, when you book. It is separate from any course fee.
ReschedulingIf you are ill and miss the exam, you need a medical certificate and must contact the institute within two weeks. Rescheduling costs 25% of the exam fee.

Goethe exam fees in India, level by level

These are the fees for an external candidate, which means anyone who did not take a course at the Goethe-Institut. All include 18% GST. The Goethe-Institut India states the GST on its exam pages.

ExamFee for all four modulesFee per module
Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1₹9,400Repeated as a whole exam
Goethe-Zertifikat A2₹10,600Check the exam page
Goethe-Zertifikat B1₹18,800₹4,700
Goethe-Zertifikat B2₹21,200₹5,300
Goethe-Zertifikat C1₹24,000₹6,000

We read the A1 fee on the Goethe-Institut India exam page on 2 October 2026. The A2, B1, B2 and C1 fees are from the Goethe-Institut Pune and New Delhi registration pages, which list the same external fees. The B1 and B2 exams for young people have the same external fees as the adult exams on those pages.

Two more exams appear on the same fee lists: the Goethe-Test PRO at ₹7,000, and the nursing-specific Goethe-Test PRO Pflege at ₹21,200 (₹5,300 per module), which the Pune page lists. If you are a nurse, ask your recognition authority which certificate it accepts before you book, and see our German for nurses page.

Fees change. Check the Goethe-Institut India registration page for your city before you book. The institute also states that it only accepts bookings made on its own website, so ignore anyone who offers a cheaper seat or a place that is not on the official list.

Internal and external fees: which one do you pay?

The Goethe-Institut's fee lists show two columns, “internal” and “external”. Internal is the lower fee. We understand it to mean candidates who studied a course at that Goethe-Institut, and external to mean everyone else. Please confirm this on the registration page before you book. If you study at Yastudy, you are an external candidate.

ExamExternal fee (what you pay)Internal fee (institute's own course students)
A2₹10,600₹8,000
B1₹18,800, or ₹4,700 per module₹14,000, or ₹3,500 per module
B2₹21,200, or ₹5,300 per module₹16,000, or ₹4,000 per module
C1₹24,000, or ₹6,000 per module₹18,000, or ₹4,500 per module

The gap is real, but it is not an offer to you: the internal fee comes with studying at the institute. Do not accept an “internal price” from an agent, because the booking will be checked against the institute's own records.

Booking B1 and B2 by module

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 and B2 each have four modules: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The fee lists show a fee for the whole exam and a fee per module. That matters when you need to retake only part of an exam.

  • Whole exam. B1 ₹18,800, B2 ₹21,200. Four modules, four parts of your result.
  • One module. B1 ₹4,700, B2 ₹5,300. For example, if you passed three modules and need to retake writing at B1, the fee list shows ₹4,700 for that module, against ₹18,800 for the whole exam.
  • Before you book a retake, read the Goethe-Institut's current rules for how long a passed module stays valid and how module results combine into one certificate.
  • A1 is repeated as a whole exam, as we explain in our Goethe A1 exam guide.

Costs people forget

  • Rescheduling after illness. You need a medical certificate and must contact the institute within two weeks. Rescheduling then costs 25% of the exam fee.
  • A replacement certificate. A replacement for a lost paper certificate costs ₹2,900, and only for exams taken in the last ten years. Download and save your certificate from your Mein Goethe.de account when you pass.
  • Travel and stay. The exam is held in person at an exam centre. If there is none in your city, budget for the journey, a night's stay and a day off. Bihar, for example, has no exam centre on the list. See our German in Patna page.
  • Your passport. You need a valid passport in the original on exam day. Check its validity well before you book.
  • A name change. The certificate is printed from the details you enter when you book, and the Goethe-Institut does not issue a new one after a change of name, for example after marriage. Enter your name exactly as in your passport.
  • Preparation material. The Goethe-Institut offers free exam training for several levels on its website. Practice books are optional.

What the whole route costs: course plus exam

Your course fee and your exam fee are paid to two different organisations. This table adds them up for the common goals, if you sit only the final exam of your route.

GoalYastudy courseGoethe exam (external)Total
A1 only (for example a spouse visa)₹14,000₹9,400₹23,400
A1 to B1 (Ausbildung)₹29,500₹18,800₹48,300
A1 to B2 (nurses, Studienkolleg)₹39,500₹21,200₹60,700
A2 to B2 (you already hold A1)₹33,500₹21,200₹54,700
B2 only (you already hold B1)₹24,000₹21,200₹45,200

Add the A1, A2 or B1 exam fees only if an office asks for those certificates as well. The course fees are the single-level and combo prices on our German course page.

Which level, which fee: by goal

Many students pay for the wrong level, or for a level they do not need. First ask the office or employer which level it wants. Then use this table to see the exam fee behind each goal.

Three budget examples

These examples use the fees above and our course prices. They are illustrations, not quotes, and they leave out travel.

Example 1: A1 for a spouse visa

A1 course ₹14,000 plus the A1 exam ₹9,400 comes to ₹23,400. If you do not pass the first time, the A1 exam is repeated as a whole exam and you pay ₹9,400 again. Under our repeat-level promise you repeat the A1 batch without paying the course fee again, with 80% attendance and the exam taken within 3 months of finishing the level.

Example 2: B1 for Ausbildung

The A1 to B1 combo ₹29,500 plus the B1 exam ₹18,800 comes to ₹48,300. If you pass three modules and retake one, for example writing, add ₹4,700 for that module, so ₹53,000, after you check the institute's retake rules.

Example 3: B2 for nursing

The A1 to B2 combo ₹39,500 plus the B2 exam ₹21,200 comes to ₹60,700. If you retake one module, add ₹5,300, so ₹66,000. If your authority asks for the nursing-specific Goethe-Test PRO Pflege instead, the fee listed on the Pune page is also ₹21,200.

Goethe or telc: how the fees compare

The Goethe-Institut publishes one external fee for each exam in India. telc exams run through licensed partner centres, and each centre sets its own dates and fees, so there is no single telc price to compare. Ask each telc centre for a written fee list for your level and format, and ask what a partial retake costs. See our telc exam guide for India. Before you compare prices, confirm that the office or employer that asked for your certificate accepts the provider.

How to pay and book

  1. Open the Goethe-Institut India exam page for your level and look at the list of exam dates.
  2. Filter by city, month and format (paper-based or computer-based) and pick a date.
  3. Sign in to Mein Goethe.de, or create an account. Your result and certificate appear there later.
  4. Enter your details exactly as in your passport: surname, first names and date of birth.
  5. Pay the exam fee online to confirm the booking.
  6. Wait for the invitation. It tells you the place, the reporting time and what to bring.

Book only with the Goethe-Institut or with an exam centre named on the Goethe-Institut India website. Goethe-Zentrum partner centres in other cities publish their own exam dates and fees on their own websites, so check them directly.

Ways to avoid wasting money

  • Book only the official way, on the Goethe-Institut website.
  • Prepare under exam timing with the free exam training and a mock test every week, so that you do not pay for a retake.
  • Choose your date after your course, when you are ready, but within the limit of any promise that applies to you. Our repeat-level promise asks you to take the exam within 3 months of finishing the level.
  • Retake only the modules you need at B1 and B2, after you check the institute's rules.
  • Do not pay an agent for a seat. The fee is paid to the institute, online.
  • Check your passport and name before you book, so that you do not pay for a replacement.

Yastudy and your exam fee

Yastudy teaches intensive German online. Our live classes prepare you for the Goethe and telc exams at each level, A1 to B2. We do not conduct the Goethe exam. You book it with the Goethe-Institut and pay it the fee.

What you get with the course

  • Live online classes, 3 hours a day, Monday to Friday
  • Batches of 10 to 12 students, with speaking practice in every class
  • Every class recorded, and doubt support on WhatsApp
  • A mock test every week
  • Preparation for the Goethe and telc exams at each level

Repeat the level if you do not clear the exam

If you do not clear your Goethe or telc exam, you repeat that level's batch without paying again. You need at least 80% attendance, and you must take the exam within 3 months of finishing the level. The exam fee itself is not refunded by us, because it is paid to the exam centre.

Prepare once, pay the exam fee once. Live classes from A1 to B2 with a mock test every week. Enrol online or see the next batch.

Common mistakes with exam fees

  1. Booking through an agent who adds a fee or offers an “internal” price.
  2. Booking before you know which certificate is accepted and having to pay again.
  3. Entering the name wrongly. The certificate prints from your booking details.
  4. Booking the whole B1 or B2 exam when a retake needs only one module, or the reverse: booking one module without reading the rules.
  5. Forgetting travel costs when the nearest centre is in another city.
  6. Missing the exam without a medical certificate and losing the fee.
  7. Using an old fee list. Fees change, so check the current page.

Your next steps

  1. Ask the office, employer or school which certificate and level it needs, and how recent it must be. See how long a Goethe certificate is valid.
  2. Open the Goethe-Institut India page for your city and look at the next dates and the current fee.
  3. Plan your course so that you finish the level before the exam date. See the batch timings.
  4. Budget the exam fee, any travel and the course together. For Ausbildung, read German for Ausbildung.
  5. Not sure of your level? Message us on WhatsApp.

How much is the Goethe A2 exam in India?

₹10,600 for an external candidate, as listed on the Goethe-Institut Pune and New Delhi registration pages. The internal fee for the institute's own course students is lower.

How much is the Goethe B1 exam in India?

₹18,800 for all four modules, or ₹4,700 per module, for an external candidate, as listed on the Pune and New Delhi pages.

How much is the Goethe B2 exam in India?

₹21,200 for all four modules, or ₹5,300 per module, for an external candidate, as listed on the Pune and New Delhi pages.

How much is the Goethe C1 exam in India?

₹24,000 for all four modules, or ₹6,000 per module, for an external candidate, as listed on the Pune and New Delhi pages. Confirm the current fee before you book.

Is GST included in the Goethe exam fee?

Yes. The Goethe-Institut India states that its exam fees include 18% GST.

Is the fee the same in every city?

The Pune and New Delhi pages list the same external fees, and our A1 guide found the same A1 fee for every city and date. Partner centres, such as the Goethe-Zentrum in other cities, publish their own fees, so check them.

What is the difference between internal and external fees?

The fee lists show a lower internal fee and a higher external fee. We understand internal to mean candidates who studied at that Goethe-Institut, and external to mean everyone else. Yastudy students are external candidates. Confirm on the registration page.

Can I pay per module?

At B1 and B2, yes. The fee lists show a fee per module (B1 ₹4,700, B2 ₹5,300). Read the institute's rules on how long a passed module stays valid before you rely on a module retake. A1 is repeated as a whole exam.

What does the exam fee include?

It covers your seat in the exam and the marking, and you download your certificate from your Mein Goethe.de account when you pass. It does not include travel, your course or any replacement certificate.

Is there a fee for rescheduling?

If you are ill and miss the exam, you need a medical certificate and must contact the institute within two weeks. Rescheduling then costs 25% of the exam fee.

What does a replacement certificate cost?

₹2,900 for a lost paper certificate, and only for exams taken in the last ten years. Download and save your certificate when you pass.

Does the Goethe-Institut offer free exam preparation?

Yes. Its India exam pages link to free exam training for several levels. Use it together with a full practice exam under timing.

Can I book through an agent at a lower price?

Be careful. The Goethe-Institut says to book only on its own website, and that places and dates not listed there are not valid. An offer that is cheaper than the official fee is a warning sign.

How do I pay the Goethe exam fee?

Online, when you book on the Goethe-Institut India website. The payment method depends on the centre, and partner centres collect their own fees.

Is the exam fee included in your course fee?

No. You pay the exam fee to the Goethe-Institut or the exam centre when you book. Our course fee covers live classes, recordings, doubt support and mock tests.

What does Yastudy's course cost?

A1 costs ₹14,000, A2 ₹16,000, B1 ₹20,000 and B2 ₹24,000 when bought one at a time. The A1 to B2 combo costs ₹39,500 against ₹74,000 level by level.

What is the total cost of A1 to B2 with the exam?

The A1 to B2 combo is ₹39,500 and the B2 exam is ₹21,200 for an external candidate, so ₹60,700 in total if you sit only the B2 exam. Add other exam fees only if an office asks for those certificates.

Do you refund the exam fee if I fail?

No. The exam fee is paid to the exam centre, not to Yastudy. If you do not clear your exam after our course, you repeat that level's batch without paying the course fee again, with at least 80% attendance and the exam taken within 3 months of finishing the level.

Is telc cheaper than Goethe?

It depends on the centre. telc centres set their own fees and dates, so there is no single price. Ask each telc centre for a written fee list, and check that your office accepts telc.

Where can I take the Goethe exam?

Goethe-Institut exam centres in India include New Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata, and the A1 list on 2 October 2026 also named Trichy and Phagwara (LPU). Goethe-Zentrum partner centres, such as those in Hyderabad, Trivandrum and Coimbatore, publish their own dates. Confirm on the official pages.

Do fees differ for young people?

On the Pune and New Delhi pages, the external fees for the B1 and B2 exams for young people are the same as for the adult exams. Check the exact exam name that your office needs.

Which exam fee do nurses pay?

It depends on the certificate your authority accepts. The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 costs ₹21,200 for an external candidate, and the Pune page lists the nursing-specific Goethe-Test PRO Pflege at ₹21,200. Ask your authority first.
