What is German A2 level?

A2 is the second of the six CEFR levels. It is still basic German, but now in connected sentences and for routine situations.

With a German A2 certificate you show that you can:

  • Understand and use common expressions and sentences in everyday situations
  • Communicate in simple, routine situations about familiar topics such as your background and education, your surroundings and your needs
  • Pick out the main information from short texts such as simple newspaper texts, ads and information boards

Goethe A2 exam: pattern, marks and fees

The German A2 exam most students take is the Goethe-Zertifikat A2. It tests four skills in about 105 minutes.

Pass mark

60 of 100 points, with at least 45 of 75 in the written parts and at least 15 of 25 in speaking.

A2 exam fee in India

₹10,600 including GST, as listed by the Goethe-Institut India on 2 October 2026. The exam fee is paid to the exam centre when you book. It is not part of the course fee.

Booking and ID

You book online on the Goethe-Institut India website. A valid passport is the only ID accepted at the exam.

Result

You see your result in your Mein Goethe.de account. The exam invitation tells you when.

Certificate validity

The Goethe-Institut India says its certificates are valid indefinitely. Ask the embassy, employer or school that will receive yours how recent it must be.

Retake

You can repeat the A2 exam as often as you need.

Goethe A2 exam papers and practice tests: the official Goethe A2 practice papers. Two sets, each with answers and listening audio. In the course you also write a mock test every week.

telc A2 exam: telc Deutsch A2 (Start Deutsch 2) tests the same four skills: listening for about 20 minutes, reading and writing for 50 minutes, and speaking for about 15 minutes in pairs.

How the German A2 classes run

Live online, so you join from any city in India. Trainers include Raj, who studied at TU Munich in a German-taught program.

3 hours live, Monday to Friday

50 hours of class in about 3½ weeks, plus about 2 hours of your own practice on each class day.

You speak in every class

Batches of 10 to 12, with 10 to 15 minutes of speaking practice in every class. The A2 speaking exam is taken in pairs, so most speaking practice is with a partner.

You never fall behind

Every class is recorded, and you can send your doubts on WhatsApp between classes.

A mock test every week

So the A2 exam pattern is familiar before exam day.

Exam-pass promise: if you don't clear the Goethe or telc A2 exam, you repeat the A2 batch without paying again. This needs at least 80% attendance and the exam taken within 3 months of finishing the level.

German A2 course fees

Take A2 on its own, or as part of a combo that costs less than paying level by level. The fee is the same for every student.

A2 only

A2 to B1 combo

₹23,500

A2 and B1, 150 hours. Paid level by level this is ₹36,000, so you save ₹12,500.

A2 to B2 combo

₹33,500

A2, B1 and B2, 270 hours. Paid level by level this is ₹60,000, so you save ₹26,500.

What German A2 is enough for

These are the usual requirements. Some employers, schools and German states ask for more, so check the official page for your case.

Opportunity Card

German A2 adds 1 point on the points route. B1 adds 2 and B2 adds 3.

Recognition of your qualification

The visa for getting a foreign professional qualification recognised asks for German at A2 or above.

Daily life in Germany

A2 covers routine situations: shopping, appointments, simple messages and e-mails.

A2 is not enough for Ausbildung, which normally needs B1, or for nurses, who need B2. Continue with the German B1 course or the German B2 course.

How long does German A2 take?

About 3½ weeks in this course: 50 hours of live class, 3 hours a day from Monday to Friday, plus about 2 hours of your own practice on each class day. Starting from zero, you finish A2 by week 6.

Can I join the German A2 course directly?

Yes, if you have finished A1. If you learned A1 somewhere else, message us on WhatsApp and we will check your level with you before you enrol.

What are the German A2 course fees?

₹16,000 for A2 on its own. The A2 to B1 combo is ₹23,500 and the A2 to B2 combo is ₹33,500.

What is the German A2 exam fee in India?

What is the marks distribution in the German A2 exam?

The Goethe-Institut publishes two A2 practice sets with answers and listening audio. In the course you also write a mock test every week.

When are the Goethe A2 exam dates?

Each Goethe exam centre in India publishes its A2 exam dates on the Goethe-Institut India website, and you book your seat online.

Is German A2 enough for Ausbildung?

No, most Ausbildung (vocational training) programs require at least B1. Some, like nursing, ask for B2.
