TestAS for a Bachelor's in Germany 2026–27: Who Needs It, Format, Modules, Scores and Preparation

TestAS is the standardised aptitude test that some German universities use to rank or admit international Bachelor's applicants. From India it is not an automatic requirement: it matters only when your university or programme asks for it. This guide shows how to find out whether you need it, what the test contains, which module to choose, how it is scored, when to sit it and how to prepare.

Quick answer

TestAS (Test for Academic Studies) is a cognitive aptitude test for international applicants to German undergraduate programmes. It has a Core Test that measures general abilities needed for study and one Subject Module that tests the thinking of your field (engineering; mathematics, computer science and natural sciences; economics; humanities, cultural studies and social sciences; plus medicine and life sciences in the digital version). You can take it in English or German at licensed test centres. From India it is not part of the standard APS procedure: the official TestAS pages say it can be relevant in the Indian application process if a German university requires it, and APS's own leaflet for university-run admission says TestAS is needed only if the university expressly asks. Some universities do: the University of Cologne requires it from all non-EU undergraduate applicants, and RWTH Aachen lets it compensate for a converted grade below 2.5. Results take three to four weeks, so book the test well before your deadline.

TestAS for a Bachelor's in Germany at a glance

International school certificates are hard to compare, so some universities add a standardised test. TestAS was developed by g.a.s.t. specifically for university admission. It measures academic aptitude on a standardised scale, which lets universities rank applicants and set minimum scores. It is a cognitive test: it does not measure personality or motivation.

Key takeaways

  • TestAS is conditional from India. The official pages say it can be relevant if German universities require it. Check your programme page before you register.
  • You always take two parts together: the Core Test and one Subject Module. You cannot take parts separately.
  • Choose the module that matches your target degree, and note that the module is chosen at registration.
  • Paper-based (about 4.5 hours) and digital (about 3.5 hours) results are comparable. The digital test adds Medicine and Life Sciences modules.
  • Results take about three weeks (digital) or four weeks (paper), and no result is released before the published date.
  • There is no pass mark. Universities decide how to use your score, so aim for the programme's published threshold or as high as you can.

Do you need TestAS? The India rules

TestAS plays different roles in different countries. In China it is part of the APS procedure to check grades, and in Vietnam it is mandatory for applicants without a university degree. For India the official TestAS page says only that TestAS can play a role in the application process if German universities require it. So your question is not "does Germany need TestAS", but "does my target programme need it".

Where TestAS appears What the rule says What to do
APS India (standard individual procedure) The April 2023 Class XII leaflet lists TestAS results (Core and Subject-specific) among its documents; APS also says TestAS is currently not a mandatory part of the verification procedure in India Confirm on the live APS checklist. See our Bachelor's APS guide
APS university-run admission (N-procedure, from 1 October 2025) TestAS is required only if the German university expressly asks for it; the university makes the subject and language selection and APS does the formal check Ask each university whether it takes part
University of Cologne TestAS required for all non-EU applicants to undergraduate programmes, submitted with the uni-assist application. Indian applicants reach Cologne through a Studienkolleg (Studienstart International plus) or the one-year route Sit the test early; see when to take TestAS
RWTH Aachen International applicants need a total grade of 2.5 or better; a TestAS result can compensate for a lower converted grade Prepare TestAS if your converted grade is borderline
Other universities and programmes Set individually Read the programme page and the "required documents" list
Do not pay for the test blindly

TestAS is a separate fee and a separate booking. Before you register, find the sentence on your programme page that mentions TestAS, or ask the university in writing. If a university only recommends it, a strong result still strengthens your application, but it is not a hard requirement.

Where else to check

  • The official g.a.s.t. page "Where is TestAS required" lists how universities use it.
  • Your programme page on the university site, and the uni-assist country page for India.
  • Our Bachelor's universities guide notes TestAS where we have verified it.
  • Watch for old rules. Some university pages still describe earlier rules: RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau's news page for Indian applicants (December 2024) says APS TestAS became mandatory for Bachelor's degrees from 1 January 2023, while TestAS's own page now says it matters in India only if a university requires it. If a page contradicts the official rule, ask the university in writing (RPTU, news for Indian applicants).

Test structure: Core Test, Subject Module, paper vs digital

Both formats consist of a Core Test (Core Module in the digital version) and a Subject Module. The question types differ slightly, but the two versions measure the same abilities overall, and results are comparable.

    Paper-based TestAS Digital TestAS
Duration About 4.5 hours including breaks About 3.5 hours including breaks
Subject Modules 4: Humanities, Cultural Studies and Social Sciences; Engineering; Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences; Economics 6: the four modules plus Medicine and Life Sciences
Notes Written notes allowed on the concept paper provided; handed in afterwards No note-taking allowed
Results About four weeks About three weeks
Where Licensed test centres; some do not offer both formats Licensed test centres; some do not offer both formats

    Core Test content

The Core Test measures general cognitive abilities necessary for academic study. In the paper-based test it is made up of subtests such as solving quantitative problems, inferring relationships, completing patterns and continuing numerical series; the digital Core Module uses its own task types. The official sample-question booklet shows real examples, and testas.de has the current structure for both formats.

    Subject Module content

Subject Modules test skills important for success in a field. Each module has its own task types, shown in the official sample-question booklet, which also confirms that both the Core Test and the Subject Module contain multiple-choice questions only.

Sources: TestAS FAQ (g.a.s.t.); TestAS sample questions (g.a.s.t., 2017)

Which subject module should you choose?

The module you choose depends on your intended field of study and on the admission requirements of the universities. Check the programme page: it may name the module it wants. The module is chosen at registration, so decide before you book.

Target degree Module Class 12 stream Format
Mechanical, electrical, civil engineering; engineering and technical degrees Engineering PCM Paper and digital
Computer science, data science, AI, mathematics, physics, chemistry Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences PCM Paper and digital
Business administration, economics Economics Commerce, or PCM Paper and digital
Psychology, social sciences, humanities, languages Humanities, Cultural Studies and Social Sciences Arts, or PCB Paper and digital
Biotechnology and life sciences Life Sciences PCB Digital only

The digital test also offers a Medicine module, but medicine in Germany is a state-examination course rather than a Bachelor's, so it is outside this guide.

Where a programme combines fields, such as business informatics or biotechnology engineering, ask the university which module it accepts. Our Bachelor's courses guide shows the Class 12 stream and Studienkolleg course for each degree.

The Studienkolleg course also depends on your degree, not only the TestAS module: T-Kurs for engineering and sciences, W-Kurs for business and economics, G-Kurs for humanities, and M-Kurs for biology. Colleges name and combine courses differently.

How TestAS is scored and how universities use it

TestAS reports your performance on a standardised scale, which lets universities rank applicants and set minimum scores. There is no national pass mark. Each university decides how to use the result: as a ranking criterion, as a minimum requirement or as a way to compensate for a lower grade. RWTH Aachen's approach, which accepts TestAS to compensate for a converted grade below 2.5, is one example; the University of Cologne's requirement for Indian applicants is another.

    • Evaluation time: about four weeks for the paper-based test and about three weeks for the digital test. No information is released before the published result date.
    • Review: you can consult your exam papers at g.a.s.t. by applying within four weeks after the result notification, and request a written review by an examination board in the same period.
    • Verification: universities can verify TestAS certificates through g.a.s.t., so do not alter or edit your certificate.
    • Retakes: unlimited, but TestAS measures mainly knowledge and skills that cannot be trained in the short term, so repetition alone rarely produces a much better score. Treat a retake as a way to fix preparation errors, not to gamble.

    How the result is reported

    Paper-based TestAS Digital TestAS
Score per part Standard score on a 70–130 scale, for the Core Test and the Subject Module TestAS score on a 0–200 scale, for the Core Module and the Subject Module
    Percentile rank 1–100 1–100
Overall Not combined Overall score on a 0–400 scale
How to read it 100 is the middle of the scale 50–150 is the average range; 150–195 is above average; 200 is excellent, reached by the top 2%

A percentile rank of 60 means that 60% of test takers scored the same as you or lower. g.a.s.t. publishes a conversion table between the two formats: a paper standard score of 100 equals a digital TestAS score of 100. There is still no universal cut-off: if a university sets a minimum score or percentile, its programme page states it.

    Registration, fee and test centres

    1. Confirm that your programme needs TestAS and which module it accepts (see the India rules and the module guide).
    2. Create an account on the g.a.s.t. participant portal (reached from testas.de) and choose a date and licensed test centre.
    3. Choose the format (paper or digital, where offered), the test language (English or German) and your Subject Module.
    4. Pay the fee in the portal. g.a.s.t. uses three country groups with different prices; you see the price for your country when you register. Payment is by credit card, direct debit, PayPal, Alipay or Sofort Pay by Bank.
    5. Take the test with your passport or the ID your centre asks for, and follow the centre's instructions.
    6. Receive your result after the evaluation period and upload the certificate with your application or send it as the university directs.

What does TestAS cost from India?

The official site gives no single number: g.a.s.t. sorts countries into three price groups and shows the price for your country when you register. Amounts quoted on blogs differ widely, so do not rely on them. Confirm the exact fee in the portal before you book, and budget it alongside the APS fee (₹18,000) and uni-assist.

    Test centres in India

Use the official test centre finder. It shows which centres in India offer TestAS on your date. Centres and formats change, and some centres do not offer both the paper and digital tests, so check availability when you pick a date.

When to take TestAS for Winter 2027/28

Work backwards from your deadline, and remember that results take three to four weeks. TestAS is best taken in the final year of secondary school, and it is not advised to take it earlier.

    When What to do Why
October to December 2026 Check which of your shortlisted programmes ask for TestAS and which module; start preparing Avoids paying for a test you do not need
December 2026 to February 2027 Apply to APS India for your certificate Certificate needed before applications
January to March 2027 Sit TestAS if required; choose a date with time for a retake Leaves time for a second attempt
By May 2027 Latest sensible TestAS date for a 15 July deadline (University of Cologne); allow four weeks for results and uni-assist processing Result must be in hand when you submit
1 March to 15 July 2027 Application windows; many winter deadlines are 15 July Needs TestAS result where required
July to August 2027 Admission, blocked account (€11,904), visa Visa file needs APS and admission

Check the live test-date list at testas.de, because dates vary by centre and format. Dates follow Winter 2026/27 university pages, so re-check each in spring 2027.

How to prepare for TestAS: an 8-week plan

TestAS measures reasoning and subject thinking, not school syllabus recall, so preparation is about familiarity with the question types and about speed. Use official practice material first: g.a.s.t. publishes sample questions and practice material for the paper-based and digital tests.

    Week Focus What to do
1 Baseline and format Read the official structure for your format; take the official sample questions untimed; note which question types cost you time
2 Core Test: language skills Practise reading and analysing texts and thinking critically under time limits
3 Core Test: abstract reasoning Practise pattern, series and logic tasks; learn to skip and return
4 Core Test: quantitative Practise data interpretation and mathematical reasoning without a calculator, unless your format allows one
5 Subject Module, part 1 Work through your module's question types with the official samples; review every error
6 Subject Module, part 2 Timed sets; build speed and accuracy
7 Full mock One full timed mock in your format, with the break; review by question type
8 Final review and rest Fix the weakest type; light practice; sleep

    Tips by module (general)

    • Engineering: spatial reasoning, technical diagrams and physics/maths in technical contexts.
    • Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences: formal mathematical reasoning, logic and data interpretation.
    • Economics: quantitative reasoning in economic contexts and logical inference.
    • Humanities, Cultural Studies and Social Sciences: reading comprehension, text analysis and arguments.

These are general descriptions from preparation guides; the official sample-question booklet shows the real item types.

Test language matters: if you choose German, your German must be strong enough to read complex passages fast. Many Indian applicants choose English, but check whether your university specifies a language.

    10 TestAS mistakes to avoid

    • Paying before checking the requirement. TestAS is only needed where the university asks for it.
    • Choosing the wrong module. It is locked at registration; check the programme page.
    • Booking too late. Results take three to four weeks and no result is released early.
    • Taking it too early. TestAS is best in the final year of school.
    • Assuming a retake will fix a weak result. Repetition rarely changes a score much; fix preparation instead.
    • Skipping official practice material. Question types are the main thing to learn.
    • Mixing up TestAS with dMAT. The dMAT is for master's applicants.
    • Relying on blog fees and dates. Use the live portal.
    • Altering your certificate. Universities verify it through g.a.s.t.
    • Forgetting your language certificate and APS. TestAS does not replace them.

TestAS for a Bachelor's in Germany: 20 questions Indian students ask

    Do you need TestAS?

    What is TestAS?

TestAS is a standardised aptitude test for international applicants to German undergraduate programmes. It measures cognitive abilities and subject-related thinking, not personality or motivation.

Is TestAS mandatory for a Bachelor's in Germany from India?

No, not as a general rule. The official TestAS pages say it can be relevant in India if German universities require it, and some do, for example the University of Cologne.

Do I need TestAS for the APS certificate?

The April 2023 Class XII leaflet lists TestAS results, but APS says TestAS is currently not a mandatory part of the procedure in India. For university-run admission (N-procedure), TestAS is needed only if the university asks. Confirm on the live checklist.

    Which universities require TestAS?

The University of Cologne requires it from Indian applicants. RWTH Aachen accepts it to compensate for a converted grade below 2.5. Others set their own rules; check each programme page.

Is TestAS the same as dMAT?

No. dMAT is for selected master's applicants. TestAS is for undergraduate applicants.

    Format and modules

    What are the TestAS modules?

Humanities, Cultural Studies and Social Sciences; Engineering; Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences; Economics (paper and digital); and Medicine and Life Sciences (digital only).

    Which module should I choose?

The one that matches your target degree and that your programme accepts: Engineering for engineering, Mathematics/Computer Science/Natural Sciences for CS and sciences, Economics for business and economics, Humanities for social sciences.

    How long is TestAS?

About 4.5 hours including breaks on paper and about 3.5 hours digitally.

Can I take the Core Test only?

No. You must take the Core Test and a Subject Module together.

Can I take TestAS in English?

Yes. You can take it in English or German.

    Is TestAS paper-based or computer-based?

Both formats exist. They measure the same abilities, results are comparable, and some centres offer only one.

    Fee, scores and results

How much does TestAS cost in India?

The price for your country appears when you register on the g.a.s.t. portal. Third-party sources quote different figures, so confirm in the portal.

How long do TestAS results take?

About four weeks for the paper-based test and about three weeks for the digital test. No result is released before the published date.

What is a good TestAS score?

There is no universal pass mark. Paper results are reported as a standard score (70–130) and digital results as a TestAS score (0–200), each with a percentile rank; on the digital scale 50–150 is the average range and 150 or more is above average. Universities set their own minimums or use scores for ranking, so check your programme page.

    Can I retake TestAS?

Yes, without limit, but repetition alone is unlikely to improve your result much.

Can I see my exam papers?

Yes: apply to g.a.s.t. within four weeks after the result notification; you can also request a written review.

    Timing and planning

    When should I take TestAS?

In the final year of school, not earlier, and early enough that results arrive before your deadline. For Winter 2027/28, January to March 2027 is a sensible window.

    Is there an age limit?

    No.

Does TestAS replace IELTS or German?

No. Language certificates and the APS certificate are separate requirements.

    Working with Yastudy

    Does Yastudy offer TestAS coaching?

Yes: see the TestAS course, and start with a free eligibility check to confirm whether you need it.
