Where can you learn German in Chandigarh?
The Goethe-Zentrum Chandigarh was set up by the Indo-German Language and Cultural Society in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi. You can learn German there, at other institutes, or online.
| Option | Choose it if | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Goethe-Zentrum Chandigarh | You want classes from the centre linked to the Goethe-Institut | It runs online classes of 12 to 15 students. It says it is not currently taking external candidates for exams. Goethe-Zentren are authorised by the Goethe-Institut and set up by local German societies under a formal agreement with it, according to the Goethe-Zentrum portal. |
| Other institutes in Chandigarh | You want a classroom near home | Ask for the fee in writing, the hours per level, the batch size and the exam support. |
| Yastudy live online | You want daily live classes, a published fee list and combos | You attend on a screen and travel only for your exam. It is not for weekend-only learners. |
Questions to ask any German course in Chandigarh
- How many class hours does each level have, and how many weeks does it take?
- What is the batch size, and will I speak in every class?
- What is the total fee, and is the exam fee included?
- What happens if I do not clear the exam?
- Are classes recorded, and can I ask doubts between classes?
Our full course, with batch timings, is on the German course page.
How Yastudy's German classes work for students in Chandigarh
Yastudy teaches German live online, so you attend from Chandigarh and travel only for your exam. Whether you live in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula or elsewhere in Punjab, Haryana or Himachal Pradesh, online classes mean you do not have to travel to a classroom. A batch has 10 to 12 students, and classes run for 3 hours a day, Monday to Friday. Every class is recorded, you can send doubts on WhatsApp between classes, and a mock test every week shows where you stand. The levels run from A1 to B2 in about 21 weeks, which is 310 hours of live class.
Try before you pay
You can watch a real class first (we send the recorded class on WhatsApp without payment), or join a live class for ₹199. The ₹199 comes off your fee if you enrol within 7 days of the class.
Repeat the level if you do not clear the exam
If you do not clear your Goethe or telc exam, you repeat that level's batch without paying again. You need at least 80% attendance, and you must take the exam within 3 months of finishing the level.
It will not suit you if you can only study on weekends. The course is built for students who can give about 5 hours a day for a few months: 3 hours of live class and about 2 hours of practice. Recordings help you catch up on a missed class, but the pace only works with regular attendance.
German levels A1 to B2: what you can do at each one
These descriptions follow the level descriptions on telc's own exam pages. The hours and weeks are Yastudy's, at 3 hours of class a day, Monday to Friday.

| B1 | Communicate in a simple and coherent way in daily life, at work and when travelling. Report experiences, describe goals and give reasons for opinions. | 100 | Week 13 |
| B2 | Communicate spontaneously and fluently, understand the main ideas of complex texts and explain your viewpoint on current issues. | 120 | Week 21 |

Goethe, telc and ÖSD exams for Chandigarh students
Goethe-Zentrum Chandigarh
The Goethe-Zentrum Chandigarh is at SCO 362-363, first floor, Sector 34-A, behind Piccadilly Mall, Chandigarh 160022. Its website says: “Currently we are not taking external candidates for examinations.” That means that, unless it changes, a student who learns elsewhere, for example at Yastudy, cannot use it to sit the exam. Check the centre's website before you plan, because this can change.
The nearest Goethe exam places
On 2 October 2026 the Goethe-Institut India exam page listed A1 exam dates in New Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Trichy and Phagwara (LPU). For Chandigarh students, Phagwara (LPU) and the Delhi region are the nearest. See German in Delhi and German in Noida. Check the Goethe-Institut's exam pages for the dates and for the other levels.
Book only on the Goethe-Institut's website. The institute warns about fraudulent offers that promise access to exams or certificates, and says that places and dates that are not listed on its website are not valid.
Goethe exam fees
These are the external fees, including 18% GST, as listed by the Goethe-Institut India (A1 on 2 October 2026, the others on its Pune and New Delhi registration pages on 4 October 2026).
| Exam | Fee (external) | Per module |
|---|---|---|
| A1: Start Deutsch 1 | ₹9,400 | Repeated as a whole exam |
| A2 | ₹10,600 | Check the exam page |
| B1 | ₹18,800 | ₹4,700 |
| B2 | ₹21,200 | ₹5,300 |
The Goethe-Institut also lists a lower “internal” fee, which we understand is for its own course students. Yastudy students pay the external fee. See Goethe exam fees in India for C1, modules and extra costs.
telc and other providers
telc exams in India run through licensed partner centres, and the list changes. We did not find a telc centre in Chandigarh in our checks. A third-party list shows an ÖSD centre, the Center for German Studies, in Chandigarh, which we could not confirm, so ask the centre and the office or employer which providers they accept. See our telc exam guide for India.
When to book
Choose your exam date when you start your course, for about four to six weeks after your batch begins, and leave time for a retake. Book your exam seat before you book travel, and plan the trip and a night's stay.
Goethe or telc: which should a student in Chandigarh choose?
For most goals, an office accepts more than one provider. The best choice is the one your office accepts that you can book soonest. In Chandigarh you cannot currently rely on the Goethe-Zentrum for an exam, because it says it is not taking external candidates. The Goethe-Institut India's A1 list on 2 October 2026 named Phagwara (LPU), New Delhi and Noida as the nearest exam places.
| Question | Goethe-Institut | telc |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sit it | Mainly the Goethe-Institut's own centres and its partner centres | Licensed partner centres, a list that changes |
| Fee | One published external fee for each exam | Set by each centre. Ask for a written fee list. |
| B1 and B2 retakes | Fee per module is listed (B1 ₹4,700, B2 ₹5,300) | Partial exam possible at B2, and centres state it for B1 |
| B2 written time | Listening 40, reading 65, writing 75 minutes | About 140 minutes in total, with listening of about 20 minutes |
| B2 speaking | Pair exam, 15 minutes | Pair exam, about 15 minutes, with 20 minutes of preparation |
| A1 for a spouse visa | Start Deutsch 1 is listed by the German Missions in India | Start Deutsch 1 of telc GmbH is listed by the German Missions in India |
Our course prepares you for both. The details of each exam are in our Goethe A1 exam guide and our telc exam guide.
Planning an exam trip from Chandigarh
Because the Goethe-Zentrum Chandigarh is not taking external candidates, students from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh should plan to travel for their exam, for example to the Delhi region, so book early.
- Book the exam first, then plan travel and any night's stay. Keep the booking confirmation and your payment receipt.
- Check your passport. The Goethe-Institut asks for a valid passport in the original on exam day, and your name must match your booking.
- Arrive early. Read the invitation for the reporting time and what to bring.
- Keep the whole day free. At some centres the written and oral parts fall on different days or at different times. Ask your centre.
- Save your result. Download your certificate when you pass and keep copies in more than one place.
Visa for students in Chandigarh
Chandigarh does not have a German mission. The Federal Foreign Office and the German Missions in India list which states belong to each Consulate General, and the Embassy in New Delhi is at 6/50G, Shanti Path, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi 110021. Check the German Missions in India pages to confirm which mission serves Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, and how to book a visa appointment.
- Appointments. The missions ask visitors to book an appointment before they come. The rules differ by visa type.
- Spouse visa. The German Missions in India ask for a current recognised A1 certificate when one is required. They list “Start Deutsch 1” of the Goethe-Institut or of telc GmbH and “Grundstufe Deutsch 1” of the ÖSD, and the exam cannot have taken place more than one year ago. A certificate is not always necessary. See how long a Goethe certificate is valid.
- Vocational training. You apply online on the Federal Foreign Office's Consular Services Portal and then follow your mission's appointment and document checklist. See German for Ausbildung for the B1 requirement and the 2026 money figures.
- Nursing. Recognition as a nurse needs B2. See German for nurses for the routes, including the recognition partnership.
- University students. Indian applicants to German universities are usually asked for an APS certificate. Our German in Delhi page explains it.
Ask the mission, in writing, about anything that is not on its own pages. We are not a visa office, and we cannot guarantee a visa.
Learning German from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal
Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula
The tricity can join the same live batches from home. Plan 3 hours of class and about 2 hours of practice a day, Monday to Friday.
Plan the exam trip first
Because the local Goethe-Zentrum is not taking external candidates, decide where you will sit the exam before you pick your date. Check the dates in the Delhi region and in Phagwara (LPU) on the Goethe-Institut India pages, then plan your classes backwards from the date.
Your goal from Chandigarh
- Ausbildung: B1 is normally needed. See German for Ausbildung.
- Nursing: recognition needs B2. See German for nurses.
- Study or spouse visa: see the Goethe A1 exam guide.
Fees and a study plan for Chandigarh
Single levels cost A1 ₹14,000, A2 ₹16,000, B1 ₹20,000 and B2 ₹24,000. The combos cost less than buying level by level:
| Combo | Class hours | Fee | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 to B1 | 190 | ₹29,500 | ₹20,500 against ₹50,000 |
| A2 to B1 | 150 | ₹23,500 | ₹12,500 against ₹36,000 |
| A2 to B2 | 270 | ₹33,500 | ₹26,500 against ₹60,000 |
| A1 to B2 | 310 | ₹39,500 | ₹34,500 against ₹74,000 |
The A1 to B2 combo also includes a Germany roadmap session and admission or Ausbildung guidance. Exam fees are paid separately to the exam centre. See Goethe exam fees in India for the Goethe fees, and the fees section of the main page to enrol.
A realistic timeline from Chandigarh
- Weeks 1 to 3. A1 live classes. Book your exam date when you start, for about four to six weeks after your batch begins.
- Weeks 4 to 13. A2 and B1, if your goal needs B1. Do one full mock exam each week.
- Weeks 14 to 21. B2, if your goal needs it, such as nursing recognition.
- After each level. Take the exam within 3 months to keep your repeat-level promise, and keep your certificate recent for the office that will receive it.
Mistakes to avoid when you learn German in Chandigarh
- Booking the exam through an agent. The Goethe-Institut says to book only on its own website and warns about fraudulent offers.
- Choosing a level from a video instead of asking the office or employer what it needs.
- Taking the exam too early and having a certificate that is too old for a visa office. See certificate validity.
- Skipping mock exams. The full exams are long. Practise under timing.
- Not practising speaking. At B1 and B2 the oral exam is a pair exam. Speak in every class.
- Paying for an “internal” Goethe price. That lower fee is for the institute's own course students.
- Leaving documents for last. Translations, certificates and appointments take time.
