At a glance
These are the facts most readers look for first. Each one is explained in detail further down.
| Point | What to know |
|---|---|
| Does it expire? | No. The Goethe-Institut India states that its certificates are valid indefinitely. |
| Spouse visa, A1 | The German Missions in India ask for a current recognised certificate. The exam cannot have taken place more than one year ago, and a certificate is not always necessary. |
| Other providers | For the spouse visa, the mission also lists "Start Deutsch 1" of telc GmbH and "Grundstufe Deutsch 1" of the ÖSD, under the same one-year rule. |
| Nursing, one example | One hospital group we checked asks for a B2 certificate not older than two years. |
| Ausbildung | The visa information sheets we read state the level (B1), not an age limit for the certificate. Ask your mission and your employer. |
| Universities | Each university sets its own rule. Check its list of accepted certificates and how recent they must be. |
| Replacement | A replacement for a lost paper certificate costs ₹2,900, for exams taken in the last ten years. |
| Name on the certificate | It is printed from your booking details, and the Goethe-Institut does not issue a new one after a change of name. |
The short answer
There are two different questions hidden in “how long is it valid?”. The first is whether the certificate itself has an end date. The second is whether the office you are giving it to will still accept it. Mixing them up is how people lose months.
- The certificate itself. The Goethe-Institut India states that its certificates are valid indefinitely. There is nothing to renew.
- The office that receives it. A visa office, employer, school or university may decide that a certificate must be recent. That rule belongs to the office, not to Goethe, and it differs from office to office.
So the practical rule is: ask the office how recent your certificate must be before you choose your exam date, and book the exam late enough that your certificate will still be within that limit on the day you apply.
Read this first. This page is general information. Visa offices, employers and universities set and change their own rules. Always confirm the exact rule with the office or institution that asked for your certificate.
Age rules for certificates, by office
We checked what each office says in writing. Where we found no written age limit, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Who asks | What we found | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| German Missions in India: spouse visa (family reunification), A1 | A current, recognised certificate for at least A1. The exam cannot have taken place more than one year ago. A certificate is not always necessary. | Take your exam within the year before your application. Ask the mission whether the year counts to the application date or to the appointment. |
| A hospital group, nursing (B2) | One group asks for a B2 certificate not older than two years, from an ALTE-certified provider such as telc, Goethe or ÖSD. | Ask your recognition authority and your employer for their own rule. |
| Nursing recognition, one regional authority | The original B2 certificate must be submitted, and it is returned with your professional certificate. We found no age limit in the part we read. | Keep the original safe. Ask the authority about age. |
| Ausbildung (visa for vocational training) | The information sheets we read state the level, normally B1, and do not state an age limit for the certificate. | Ask your mission and your training employer or school. |
| Universities and Studienkolleg | Each sets its own rules for accepted tests and dates. | Read the admission page for your programme. Ask by email if it is not clear. |
| Employers | Some ask for a recent certificate. There is no general rule. | Ask in the job application or at the interview. |
Plan your exam date backwards
Start from the date you will hand in your certificate, then count back. Allow time for your course, for the exam, for the result, and for a retake if you need one.
| Step | What to count | Example for a spouse visa |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Application date | The day you submit the visa file | Say 15 October 2027 |
| 2. Earliest acceptable exam date | One year before, for the spouse visa rule | No earlier than about 15 October 2026 |
| 3. Result time | Ask your exam centre how long results take | Allow several weeks |
| 4. Retake buffer | Leave time for a second attempt | Book your first exam at least a few months before the application |
| 5. Course | Finish your level before the exam | A1 takes about 3 weeks at Yastudy |
The example is only an illustration of the one-year rule. Confirm the counting rule and your dates with the mission.
By goal: when to take the exam
- Spouse visa. Within the year before you apply, with a buffer for a retake. See our Goethe A1 exam guide.
- Ausbildung. Early enough to show B1 in your applications, because employers read many applications and want proof of your level. Then ask the mission whether it has an age rule. See German for Ausbildung.
- Nursing recognition. Before you submit your recognition application, and not so early that your employer's age rule would reject it. See German for nurses.
- Studienkolleg or university. Before the application deadline, with the university's list of accepted tests in hand.
What if your certificate is too old?
- Ask the office what it accepts. Some offices accept an older certificate together with a newer, higher-level one. Ask in writing.
- Do not try to “renew”. A Goethe certificate cannot be refreshed. If an office wants a recent one, you must sit the exam again.
- Retake the right exam. If you are retaking, check whether you only need the level the office asks for, and what the exam costs. See Goethe exam fees in India.
- Refresh your German first. If a year or more has passed, revise with a mock exam before you book. Our live classes can bring you back to the level.
- Consider the next level. If you have kept studying, a higher certificate may be accepted by the office and may also open more options.
Downloading, printing and replacing your certificate
- Download. When you pass, you download the certificate from your Mein Goethe.de account and print it yourself. Save the file in more than one place.
- Check the details. Your name and date of birth are taken from the details you entered when you booked. The Goethe-Institut does not issue a new certificate after a change of name, for example after marriage, so enter your name exactly as in your passport.
- Replacement. A replacement for a lost paper certificate costs ₹2,900, and only for exams taken in the last ten years.
- Partner centres. If you took the exam at a partner centre, the centre gives you the result, so ask the centre about copies.
- Originals. Some authorities ask for the original and return it later. One regional nursing authority says the original B2 certificate must be submitted and comes back with the professional certificate. Keep a scan before you send anything.
Certificate, result and confirmation of participation
People often send the wrong document to an office, so know which one you hold.
| Document | When you get it | Can you use it as proof of your level? |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate | When you pass. You download it from your Mein Goethe.de account and print it. | Yes. This is the document offices ask for. |
| Confirmation of participation | When you do not pass. It shows your points. | No. It does not prove the level. You can repeat the exam. |
| Result in your account | When the institute publishes it. Your invitation says when. | Not by itself. Use the certificate. |
If you do not pass, you can repeat the exam as often as you need. At A1 it is repeated as a whole exam, so you take all four parts again and pay the fee again. At B1 and B2 the fee lists show a fee per module, so check the institute's current rules before you book a retake. The date on which you finally pass is the date that counts for the age rule.
telc and ÖSD certificates
The same two questions apply to other providers. For a spouse visa, the German Missions in India list “Start Deutsch 1” of telc GmbH and “Grundstufe Deutsch 1” of the Austrian Language Diploma (ÖSD) next to the Goethe-Institut's certificate, and the one-year exam rule applies to all of them. We did not find an end date for telc certificates on the telc exam pages we read. For the time limit on a passed part of a telc exam, centres give their own rules. See our telc exam guide for India.
Never use a purchased certificate
Search for “Goethe certificate” and you will find sites that sell certificates without an exam. These are fake. Authorities and employers can check a certificate with the issuing institute, and a fake can mean a refused visa or a cancelled job offer. Book only with the Goethe-Institut or an exam centre named on its website, and keep your own certificate and booking confirmation.
Yastudy and your certificate
Yastudy teaches intensive German online. Our live classes prepare you for the Goethe and telc exams at each level, A1 to B2. We do not conduct the exams. You take them at a licensed exam centre.
Repeat the level if you do not clear the exam
If you do not clear your Goethe or telc exam, you repeat that level's batch without paying again. You need at least 80% attendance, and you must take the exam within 3 months of finishing the level. Because the exam must come soon after your course, this also helps you keep your certificate recent.
Plan your course and your exam date together. Live classes from A1 to B2, with a mock test every week. Enrol online or see the next batch.
See fees and enrolSee batch timingsCommon mistakes
- Taking the exam too early and having the certificate rejected as too old.
- Assuming “no expiry” means “always accepted”. The office decides.
- Not asking how the year is counted for the spouse visa.
- Entering the name differently from the passport. The certificate is printed from your booking.
- Losing the only copy. Save the download in several places.
- Sending the only original without a scan.
- Buying a shortcut. Fake certificates are fraud.
Your next steps
- Write down the exact office and the date you will hand in your certificate.
- Ask that office how recent the certificate must be, in writing.
- Count back and choose your exam date, with a buffer for a retake. Check the fee on Goethe exam fees in India.
- Plan your course so that you finish the level before the exam. See the batch timings.

Questions students ask
Does a Goethe certificate expire?
No. The Goethe-Institut India states that its certificates are valid indefinitely. The office that receives your certificate can still ask for a recent one.
Is a Goethe A1 certificate valid for a spouse visa after two years?
The German Missions in India say the exam cannot have taken place more than one year ago. So a certificate older than one year is likely to be rejected for the spouse visa. Confirm with the mission.
How old can my B1 certificate be for Ausbildung?
The visa information sheets we read state the level, normally B1, and do not state an age limit for the certificate. Ask your mission and your training employer or school what they accept.
Does a B2 certificate expire for nursing recognition?
The certificate does not expire. One hospital group asks for a B2 certificate not older than two years. Your recognition authority and employer may have their own rule, so ask both.
Can I use the same Goethe certificate for two different visas or applications?
The certificate stays valid, so you can show it more than once, as long as each office accepts that level and age. Keep the original safe and a scan.
How do I count the one-year rule for the spouse visa?
The mission says the exam cannot have taken place more than one year ago. Ask the mission whether it counts to the date of your application or to the date of your appointment, and keep a buffer.
What if my certificate is too old?
Ask the office what it accepts. If it needs a recent certificate, you must sit the exam again. A Goethe certificate cannot be renewed.
How do I download my Goethe certificate?
You download it from your Mein Goethe.de account when you pass, and print it yourself. If you took the exam at a partner centre, the centre gives you the result, so ask the centre.
Can I get a duplicate of a lost certificate?
A replacement for a lost paper certificate costs ₹2,900, and only for exams taken in the last ten years. Download and save the file when you pass.
What if the name on my certificate is wrong?
The certificate is printed from the details you entered when you booked. The Goethe-Institut does not issue a new one after a change of name, for example after marriage. Enter your name exactly as in your passport.
Do I need the original certificate or is a print enough?
It depends on the office. Some authorities ask for the original, for example one regional nursing authority returns it with the professional certificate. Ask the office and keep a scan.
Does a telc certificate expire?
We found no end date on the telc exam pages we read. The same rule applies as for Goethe: the office that receives it can ask for a recent one. For a spouse visa, the one-year exam rule applies to telc and ÖSD as well.
Is an ÖSD certificate accepted like a Goethe certificate?
For the spouse visa, the German Missions in India list ÖSD's Grundstufe Deutsch 1 next to the Goethe-Institut and telc. For other goals, ask the office which providers it accepts.
Do passed modules at B1 or B2 expire?
We have not verified the time limit for passed modules, so check the Goethe-Institut's current rules before you plan a module retake. See our fees page for module prices.
Does the exam date appear on the certificate?
Check your own certificate and your Mein Goethe.de account for the details that are shown. The office may ask for the exam date, so keep your booking confirmation too.
Can I take the exam sooner so that I am safe?
Only if the office has no age rule that your certificate would break. Because some offices want a recent certificate, taking the exam too early can be a mistake. Ask first.
Does a higher certificate replace an older lower one?
Some offices accept a higher-level certificate instead of the one they asked for, others do not. Ask the office in writing.
What does a retake cost?
The exam fee depends on the level. For an external candidate, A1 is ₹9,400, A2 ₹10,600, B1 ₹18,800 and B2 ₹21,200, and B1 and B2 also have a fee per module. See our Goethe fees page.
How can an office check that my certificate is real?
Authorities and employers can check a certificate with the issuing institute. Only a certificate from an exam you sat is genuine, so never buy one.
Does Yastudy conduct the Goethe exam?
No. Yastudy runs live online German classes that prepare you for the Goethe and telc exams. You book and take the exam at a licensed exam centre, and pay the fee to that centre.
What if I do not clear the exam after your course?
You repeat that level's batch without paying again, as long as you attended at least 80% of classes and took the exam within 3 months of finishing the level.
Is the exam fee included in your course fee?
No. You pay the exam fee to the exam centre when you book. Our course fee covers live classes, recordings, doubt support and mock tests.
