Germany Student Visa for Indian Students 2026–27: Process, Documents, Fees, Interview & Refusals

The German student visa is where small mistakes become expensive. A wrong sub-category means starting again, an Indian affidavit isn't accepted for funds, and since 2024 there's no appeal in India. This guide follows the German Missions in India's current rules: the Consular Services Portal step by step, every document, the money and insurance rules, what's checked at the interview, what to do after a refusal, and what happens after you land. It includes an interactive checklist.

Quick answer

Apply for a national (D) study visa before you travel. Start on the Consular Services Portal: choose the right sub-category, upload your documents and finish the pre-check; you then get a link to book your appointment, usually at VFS Global. You need your admission letter, APS certificate, a recognised language certificate, €11,904 in a blocked account (or a German sponsor’s formal obligation letter or a qualifying scholarship), health insurance from arrival, a tabular CV and a freely written motivation letter. The fee is ₹8,300 (€75). Processing “may take several months”, and since 1 January 2024 there’s no appeal in India: you reapply or go to court within one month.

Germany student visa from India: the short version

You need a national (D) visa for study, applied for in India before you travel. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, the missions direct you to the national visa, not a Schengen visa.[1] The application starts online on the Consular Services Portal, most students then attend an appointment at VFS Global, and the decision rests with the German mission responsible for your state.[2][3]

Key takeaways

  • Portal first. Where available, applying through the Consular Services Portal is obligatory; you finish a pre-check before you get a link to book your appointment.[2]
  • Pick the right sub-category. You can't change it later "without starting the process over".[4]
  • Funds: a blocked account of €11,904 (2026), a German sponsor's formal obligation letter, or a qualifying scholarship. An Indian affidavit of support isn't accepted.[4][3]
  • Language proof is a certificate. Unless your university has individually tested your English, a recognised certificate is obligatory; don't submit exemption letters or medium-of-instruction certificates.[3]
  • Time: processing "may take several months"; status enquiries aren't answered in the first three months.[3]
  • No agent needed. The missions say "It is not necessary to use an agent to apply for a visa."[2]

How to apply for a German student visa: step by step

  1. Get your admission and APS certificateYou need an admission letter for "a full-time degree programme in presence at a German university", and you "almost always" need an APS certificate.[4]
  2. Arrange funds and insuranceUsually a blocked account of €11,904 and health insurance from your arrival date (see money and insurance).
  3. Start on the Consular Services PortalChoose the visa type, your country of residence and the mission responsible for your state, then complete the questionnaire for the right sub-category (for example, master's studies).[2][4]
  4. Upload your documents and finish the pre-check"Only then will you receive a link to book an on-site-appointment." Skip it and your application won't be accepted at the appointment.[2]
  5. Book and attend your appointmentVFS Global handles bookings, one appointment per applicant; most student applications are handled at VFS.[3] Bring originals or copies certified by a German authority: Indian notary certifications, attestation and apostilles aren't recognised.[3]
  6. Pay the fee₹8,300 (€75) for applicants over 18, paid in rupees at the exchange rate on the day and not refundable, plus the service provider's fee.[2]
  7. Interview, if invitedYou must attend it yourself; refusing to appear may lead to rejection.[4][3]
  8. Wait for the decisionThere's no online tracking, and early appointments are granted only in extreme medical or humanitarian situations.[3]

Which mission handles your application depends on your state; students from Bihar and Jharkhand, for example, fall under the Consulate General in Kolkata. See the full table in our main guide.[5]

Proof of funds and health insurance

OptionRule
Blocked accountCurrently €11,904, with a blocking confirmation that no more than €992 a month can be withdrawn[4]
Formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung)From a sponsor living in Germany, made in front of the local immigration office there; you need the original.[4] An Indian "affidavit" of support isn't accepted.[3]
ScholarshipA German or EU scholarship or stipend; if it covers €992 a month, no blocked account is needed[4][3]
Education loanComes in addition to the blocked account, not instead of it[3]
Private university feesProof of the fee amount and of payment for the first year, or a substantial deposit[4]

Health insurance: the missions ask for a certificate of statutory or private health insurance from your intended arrival date.[4] If cover starts later, the visa will start from that later date.[3] Costs, providers and the 2027 blocked-account projection are in our cost of studying guide.

The visa interview and document checks

Interviews do happen: you must attend yours in person, and refusing to appear may lead to rejection.[4][3] The missions can ask for more documents or verify your certificates.[4] Verification of Indian documents costs ₹45,000 per application and takes about six weeks plus courier time, and only German authorities or courts can request it.[6]

Questions to prepare

  • Why Germany, and why this programme and university? Name two modules.
  • How does it connect to your bachelor's and work experience?
  • What did you do in any gap year?
  • Who is funding you, and what will your monthly costs be?
  • What will you do after the degree?

Answer honestly and consistently with your SOP and CV: the officer has your file. These questions are from our counselling experience, not an official list.

What to do if your German student visa is refused

  • No appeal (remonstration) in India: it was abolished on 1 January 2024.[7][8]
  • Reapply at any time, with a stronger, corrected file.[7]
  • Or go to court: you can file a lawsuit at the Administrative Court Berlin within one month of receiving the refusal. The visa section can't give legal advice.[7]
Beware of anyone who promises a visa

"If you give false information or use false documents, your application will be refused."[2] The Consulate General in Mumbai warns that agents and counsellors can't influence or schedule appointments, and that visa appointments are handled only by VFS.[9] That includes us: what a counsellor can do is help you build a complete, honest, consistent file.

After the visa: from arrival to residence permit

  • Visa validity: usually from 90 days up to a year, and it may not cover your whole stay.[2]
  • Register your address within two weeks of finding accommodation, and register with your local foreigners authority within three months of entering Germany.[10]
  • Residence permit for study: you apply to your local foreigners authority; it lets you work up to 140 full days or 280 half days a year.[11]

The full first-month checklist is in our guide on what to do after the visa.

Germany student visa: 16 questions Indian students ask

Process and fees

How do I apply for a German student visa from India?

Start on the Consular Services Portal: choose the study visa and the right sub-category, upload your documents and complete the pre-check. You then get a link to book your appointment, usually at VFS Global, where you submit originals or German-certified copies and pay the fee.

What is the German student visa fee in India?

₹8,300 (€75) for applicants over 18, paid in rupees at the day's exchange rate and not refundable, plus the service provider's fee.

How long does a German student visa take from India?

The missions say processing "may take several months" depending on the category, and they don't answer status enquiries in the first three months. Apply as soon as you're admitted.

Can I track my German visa application?

No. The missions say there's no way to track an application online.

Do I need an agent to apply for a German student visa?

No. The missions say "It is not necessary to use an agent", and appointments are handled only by VFS. A counsellor can help you prepare a complete file, but can't influence the decision.

Documents and money

What documents are required for a German student visa?

Passport, admission letter, APS certificate, language certificate, proof of funds, health insurance, academic records, a tabular CV and a motivation letter, plus tuition proof for private universities. Use our checklist above.

How much money do I need in a blocked account for a German student visa?

€11,904 in 2026, with at most €992 a month released. Alternatives are a formal obligation letter from a sponsor in Germany or a qualifying scholarship.

Can my parents' affidavit replace the blocked account?

No. The missions don't accept the Indian affidavit of support. A sponsor must be resident in Germany and make a formal obligation letter at the immigration office there.

Does an education loan replace the blocked account?

No. The missions say an education loan is additional to the blocked account; it can fund it.

Is a medium-of-instruction letter accepted for the German visa?

No. Unless your university has individually tested your English, a recognised English certificate is obligatory; the missions say not to provide exemption letters or language-of-instruction certificates. PTE, Duolingo and TOEFL Home Edition aren't recognised.

Do I need apostille or notarised copies?

No. Bring originals or copies certified by a German authority; Indian notary certifications, attestation and apostilles aren't recognised.

Interview, refusal and after

Is there an interview for the German student visa?

There can be. You must attend in person, and refusing to appear may lead to rejection.

Can I appeal a German student visa refusal?

Not in India: remonstration was abolished on 1 January 2024. You can reapply at any time, or file a lawsuit at the Administrative Court Berlin within one month.

Can I go to Germany on a Schengen visa and change it to a student visa?

Don't plan on it. For stays of more than 90 days the missions direct you to the national visa, applied for before you travel.

How long is the German student visa valid?

Usually from 90 days up to a year. After arrival you register your address and apply to the foreigners authority for a residence permit for study.

Can Yastudy help with my German student visa?

Yes. We check your portal form and every document, help with funds and insurance, and run a mock interview. No one can promise a visa, and we never draft your motivation letter.
