IELTS Score for MS in Germany 2026–27: University Requirements, Visa Rules, Fees & When to Test

What IELTS score German universities actually ask for, programme by programme; what the German Missions in India accept for the student visa (and why PTE and Duolingo don't work); the 2026 fee and format changes in India; and when to book the test for your intake. Checked against official pages in October 2026.

Quick answer

Most English-taught master’s programmes in Germany ask for IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 (CEFR B2); many competitive engineering, computer science and management programmes ask for 7.0 (C1). For the student visa, the German Missions in India accept IELTS, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge certificates but not PTE, Duolingo or TOEFL Home Edition, and not medium-of-instruction letters. IELTS costs ₹19,000 in India, results arrive in about two days, and scores are officially valid for two years. Take it before you apply: by October–December for winter intakes.

IELTS for MS in Germany at a glance

You need English twice: once for admission, where each university sets its own minimum, and again for the visa, where the German Missions in India accept only certain certificates. Most expensive mistakes happen in the gap between the two, when a student is admitted with a test the visa section won't recognise.

Key takeaways

  • Typical requirement: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall (CEFR B2) for many English-taught master's; 7.0 (C1) for many competitive engineering, computer science and management programmes. See 10 examples.
  • Check band minimums too: some programmes also set a minimum per section, for example "no section below 5.5".[1]
  • For the visa: "neither Duolingo tests nor Pearson PTE or TOEFL home edition tests are recognized for applications in India", and medium-of-instruction letters aren't accepted as language proof.[2][3]
  • Fee and format: ₹19,000 for IELTS Academic in 2026; the paper test has been discontinued in India, and results for the computer test arrive in about two days.[4][5]
  • Timing: have your score before you apply, so book about three months ahead of your first deadline.

What IELTS score do you need for MS in Germany?

There is no national minimum. Each university, and often each programme, sets its own. Most express it as a CEFR level (B2 or C1) and list the test scores they treat as equivalent. Here is how the main tests map to those levels, from the test makers themselves:

Test scores and CEFR levels
CEFR levelIELTS (overall)TOEFL iBT (new 1–6 scale)TOEFL iBT (old 0–120)What German universities call it
B25.5–6.54–4.5≈ 72–94"Upper intermediate"; enough for many English-taught master's
C17.0–8.05–5.5≈ 95 and up"Advanced"; asked by many competitive programmes

IELTS: ielts.org says 5.5–6.5 is equivalent to B2 and 7–8 to C1.[8] TOEFL: ETS introduced a 1–6 scale on 21 January 2026 and will show comparable 0–120 scores for two years; B2 is 4–4.5 and C1 is 5–5.5, and a 5 is equivalent to 95–106.[9] Universities set their own cut-offs, which may differ from these ranges.

The pattern: competitive engineering, computer science and management programmes cluster at IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 95 / PTE 76 (C1). Many others accept 5.5–6.5 (B2). None of the official pages we checked listed Duolingo. If you're scoring 6.5 and aiming at TU9 or top computer science programmes, plan a retake for 7.0. IELTS and the German student visa: what the Missions accept

Your university decides admission. But when you apply for the national (D) student visa, the German Missions in India check your language proof too, against their own rules. Their student visa checklist asks for:

"Proof of the language skills in the language of instruction for the study course or the preparatory course … as a rule at least B2-level … Where not confirmed by the German University in the admission notification."German Missions in India, student visa checklist[3]

And on which certificates count: "Only certificates approved by German government will be accepted (such as Goethe Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, ÖSD, IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge Assessment English). Also, certificates based on online exams are not accepted." The checklist asks for originals plus two copies.[3]

The Missions' student page adds that for degree studies "generally the required level of knowledge is C1, regardless if the studies are in German or English", and that "neither Duolingo tests nor Pearson PTE or TOEFL home edition tests are recognized for applications in India".[2]

    The PTE and MOI trap

A university can admit you on PTE, Duolingo or your bachelor's medium of instruction. If the admission letter doesn't confirm your English, the visa section will still want a recognised certificate. The safe route for Indian students is simple: take IELTS Academic (or TOEFL iBT at a centre) once, before you apply, and use the same certificate for admission and the student visa language proof.

Do you also need German? Not for an English-taught programme, but for daily life, part-time work and your career it matters a lot: see our guide to German language for MS students. Many of our students start the German A1 course while preparing for IELTS, then join the live German course up to B1, and take the Goethe A1 exam as their first certificate.

When to take IELTS for each intake

Have your result before you apply: most universities want it with your application, and the university application through uni-assist takes four to six weeks to process.[18] Allow time for a retake in case you miss a band.

    IntakeTypical deadlinesTake IELTS byRetake buffer
    Summer 2027 (April)November 2026 – 15 January 2027October 2026Tight: book now
    Winter 2027/28 (October)1 March – 15 July 2027 (many 15 July)December 2026 – January 2027Time for one retake before March
Winter 2028/29About March – July 2028Late 2027Comfortable; keep the two-year validity in mind

Mind the two-year validity: a test taken too early may have expired by the time you apply for the visa. IELTS results are "officially recognised as valid for 2 years from the test date", though organisations can accept older ones.[6] TUM, for example, says the expiry printed on a certificate isn't relevant to its applications, but the visa section and other universities may see it differently.[10]

Booking IELTS in India: fees and format changes in 2026

IELTS fees in India (IDP, 2026)
    ItemFee
    IELTS Academic or General Training₹19,000
IELTS for UKVI (not needed for Germany)₹19,250
    One Skill Retake₹12,650
    Reschedule (computer test)₹4,750
    Enquiry on Results (re-mark)₹14,250
    • Paper-based IELTS has been discontinued in India; the test is computer-delivered.[4]
    • New from 1 September 2026: you can choose to write the Writing section on paper while Listening and Reading stay on computer; results still come "within 2 days".[5]
    • One Skill Retake lets you retake one section within 60 days for ₹12,650 and gives you a new report form.[19] IDP lists where it's accepted, and German universities aren't on that list, so ask your university before you rely on a One Skill Retake result.
    • Cancellation and transfer charges apply; check IDP's current refund policy before you book.
    • Take Academic, not General Training, and not "IELTS for UKVI" (which you don't need for Germany).

Sending your IELTS score to German universities

    • uni-assist: upload a clear scan of your Test Report Form. uni-assist says: "We can verify your certificate (IELTS Test Report Form) online", and the same for TOEFL.[20]
    • University portals: upload the TRF; some also ask for the TRF number so they can verify it.
    • One sitting: some universities need the minimum reached in a single test session: RWTH Aachen, for example, says this for TOEFL and doesn't accept TOEFL MyBest scores.[11]
    • Keep the original for the visa appointment, with two copies.[3]
    • APS: the APS checklist also asks for a copy of your language certificate; see the APS document checklist.

How to reach IELTS 6.5 or 7.0: a 6-week plan

Most Indian applicants already have the vocabulary. What costs bands is technique, timing and Writing Task 2. This is the plan our trainers use with students who need 6.5 or 7.0 for Germany.

    WeekFocusWhat to do
1BaselineTake one full computer-based mock under exam conditions. Note your band per section and the gap to your target.
2Writing Task 2Learn the four essay types and a clear structure; write three essays and get each one marked against the band descriptors.
3ReadingTimed passages daily; practise True/False/Not Given and matching headings, the usual band-killers.
4Listening and Writing Task 1Daily listening sets with spelling checks; graph and process descriptions in 20 minutes.
5SpeakingTwo mock interviews a week; record yourself, fix fillers and develop Part 2 answers to two minutes.
6Full rehearsalTwo full mocks on computer; review errors; book the test only when your mock is at or above the target in every section.

Aim for half a band above the requirement in every section. That protects you against a section minimum (such as "no section below 5.5" or "6.0 in each") and a nervous test day. Need structured help? Yastudy runs IELTS coaching with computer-based mocks.

8 IELTS mistakes that cost Indian students an admission or a visa

    1. Taking PTE or Duolingo because a university accepts it. The visa section in India doesn't.
    2. Relying on a medium-of-instruction letter without checking the programme rules and your admission letter.
    3. Taking General Training or IELTS for UKVI instead of IELTS Academic.
    4. Missing a section minimum while meeting the overall score.
    5. Testing too late and applying after a deadline, or with "result pending".
    6. Testing too early, so the two-year validity runs out before the visa.
    7. Combining scores from two sittings where a university wants one sitting (RWTH, for example, for TOEFL).
    8. Leaving the original at home: the visa appointment needs the original and two copies.

IELTS for MS in Germany: 20 questions Indian students ask

    Scores

What IELTS score is required for MS in Germany?

Usually 6.0–6.5 overall (CEFR B2) for English-taught master's, and 7.0 (C1) for many competitive engineering, computer science and management programmes. Some programmes also set a minimum per section. Check each programme's page.

Is IELTS 6.0 enough for Germany?

For some programmes, yes: TU Chemnitz's general rule is 5.5, and some RWTH and Paderborn programmes accept 6.0. Many good programmes ask for 6.5, and competitive ones 7.0, so 6.0 narrows your shortlist.

Is IELTS 6.5 enough for TU9 universities?

For some programmes. TUM's Sport and Health Sciences master's and KIT Physics ask for 6.5; Stuttgart INFOTECH, Bonn Computer Science and TU Darmstadt's general rule ask for 7.0. Check the exact programme.

Do German universities require a minimum score in each IELTS section?

Some do. KIT's Physics master's, for example, asks for 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5. Aim for half a band above every minimum.

What is the IELTS equivalent of B2 and C1?

According to IELTS, 5.5–6.5 is equivalent to B2 and 7–8 to C1. Universities may set their own cut-offs.

What TOEFL score is equivalent to IELTS 6.5 and 7.0?

German universities typically pair IELTS 6.5 with TOEFL iBT 80–90 and IELTS 7.0 with 95. On TOEFL's new 1–6 scale (from January 2026), B2 is 4–4.5 and C1 is 5–5.5.

    Visa and alternatives

Is IELTS mandatory for the German student visa?

The visa needs language proof "as a rule at least B2" unless your university confirms your English in the admission letter. If you need a certificate, IELTS, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge are accepted; PTE, Duolingo and TOEFL Home Edition are not.

Is PTE accepted for the Germany student visa?

No. The German Missions in India say Pearson PTE, Duolingo and TOEFL Home Edition are not recognised for applications in India, even if a university admitted you with them.

    Is Duolingo accepted in Germany?

Rarely for admission (none of the official university pages we checked listed it), and not for the visa from India.

Can I study in Germany without IELTS?

Sometimes for admission: some universities accept an English-taught bachelor's (for example TU Chemnitz, or TU Darmstadt with a university confirmation). But the visa section doesn't accept medium-of-instruction letters as certificates, so unless your admission letter confirms your English you'll need a recognised test anyway.

Is a medium-of-instruction letter enough for Germany?

It depends on the university, and some (such as Bonn's Computer Science master's) say it's not enough. For the visa, the Missions' checklist says not to submit "Language of Instruction Certificates".

Do I need German instead of IELTS?

Not for an English-taught programme. German-taught programmes need German certificates (such as TestDaF, DSH or Goethe C1) instead. German still helps a lot with jobs and daily life.

    Test, fee and timing

Which IELTS should I take for Germany: Academic or General?

IELTS Academic. Universities ask for it, and you don't need IELTS for UKVI for Germany.

What is the IELTS fee in India in 2026?

₹19,000 for IELTS Academic or General Training, ₹19,250 for IELTS for UKVI and ₹12,650 for a One Skill Retake (IDP India).

Is paper-based IELTS still available in India?

No, it has been discontinued. Since 1 September 2026 you can choose to write the Writing section on paper, with Listening and Reading on computer.

How long does it take to get IELTS results?

About two days for the computer-delivered test, including the option with Writing on paper.

How long is IELTS valid for Germany?

Officially two years from the test date. Some universities accept older results (TUM says the printed expiry isn't relevant to its applications), but plan for the score to be valid at your visa appointment.

Do German universities accept IELTS One Skill Retake?

Not clearly. IDP doesn't list German universities among those accepting it, so ask your university in writing before you rely on one.

When should I take IELTS for the winter 2027/28 intake?

By December 2026 or January 2027, so you can apply from March 2027 and still retake if needed.

How do I send my IELTS score to German universities?

Upload a scan of your Test Report Form; uni-assist verifies IELTS and TOEFL results online. Keep the original and two copies for the visa.
