Choosing German universities for a Bachelor's: the short version
India sends more students to Germany than any other country, 69,816 in winter 2025/26 according to DAAD figures. With that much competition, the students who get good offers are not the ones applying only to the best-known names. They are the ones whose shortlist matches their stream, marks, German level and budget.
Key takeaways
- Admission is programme by programme. Each Bachelor's sets its own admission type (open, numerus clausus, aptitude assessment), deadline and language rule. TUM, for example, lists unrestricted programmes, restricted (NC) programmes, programmes with an aptitude assessment and programmes with an aptitude recommendation.
- Class 12 alone is not enough. From Winter Semester 2026/27, APS India requires at least 70% in Class 12 for both undergraduate pathways: a Studienkolleg year, or one successful year of a Bachelor's in India. See eligibility after 12th and our APS support service.
- German decides your list. Most Bachelor's programmes are taught in German. Direct entry generally needs C1; a Studienkolleg usually asks for B1–B2 at entry. See German level for a Bachelor's.
- Five of the ten charge tuition. TUM and four Baden-Württemberg universities. The others charge only a semester contribution.
- Deadlines cluster around 15 July for the winter intake, but routes differ: uni-assist at TUM, Humboldt, FU Berlin and TU Berlin; the university's own portal at LMU, Heidelberg, RWTH, KIT, Freiburg and Mannheim.
- A Fachhochschule can beat a famous name for job-focused students; and a private university must be state-recognised and offer full-time, on-campus study.
University, TU, Fachhochschule or private: which type suits you?
| Type | What it is | Typical fit for Indian Bachelor's applicants | Tuition (non-EU Bachelor's) |
|---|---|---|---|
| University / Technical University (TU) | Research-led, theory-heavy; includes the TU9 and U15 alliances | Strong marks, interest in theory, a Master's or PhD plan | €0 in most states; €1,500 a semester in Baden-Württemberg; TUM €2,300 or €3,400 a semester for new students from winter 2027/28; FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg charges new non-EU students from summer 2027 |
| University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule / Hochschule) | Practice-oriented, smaller classes, industry projects and a practical semester | Students who want a job soon; some English-taught Bachelor's | Usually €0 at public ones (check Baden-Württemberg); example: Hochschule Rhein-Waal, tuition-free |
| Private university (state-recognised) | Fee-charging; English-taught options | Students who can pay and want English-taught degrees | Fee-charging; check each university's fee page. Example: Constructor University, Bremen |
TU9 and U15: where the ten sit
- TU9 (leading technical universities): RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, KIT and TUM are four of the nine.
- U15 (leading research universities): FU Berlin, Humboldt, Freiburg, Heidelberg and LMU Munich are five of the fifteen.
- Mannheim is not in either alliance but is very strong in business and economics.
Membership signals research strength, not your chances. For a Bachelor's, treat TU9 programmes as reach options unless your marks and subject fit are strong.

QS 2027: where the ten stand
60 German universities are ranked in the QS World University Rankings 2027, published in June 2026. Use the ranking to understand reputation, not to pick programmes.
| University | City | QS 2027 | Alliance | Non-EU Bachelor's tuition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TUM | Munich | 25 | TU9 | €2,300 or €3,400 / semester (new students from winter 2027/28) |
| LMU Munich | Munich | 61 | U15 | €0 |
| Heidelberg University | Heidelberg | 86 | U15 | €1,500 / semester |
| Freie Universität Berlin | Berlin | =98 | U15 | €0 |

Outside TUM, the strongest choice changes by subject, and several top-ranked universities charge no tuition. A strong subject rank says little about your chances, though: most Bachelor's programmes are German-taught, so language and entrance route come first. Check our IELTS course for English-taught options and our German language course for the rest.

| QS 2027 | 25 (top in Germany) |
| Tuition (non-EU) | €2,300 or €3,400 a semester for new Bachelor's students from winter 2027/28 (₹2.49–3.68 lakh); waivers exist for first-semester students who cannot cover fees |
| How to apply | Preliminary documentation (VPD) from uni-assist, then application in TUMonline |
| Window and deadline | 15 May to 15 July (winter); summer intake 15 January |

What TUM is known for
TUM leads Germany in computer science (26 in the world), mechanical and electrical engineering (both 19), civil engineering (37) and physics (27), with strong business and management (=91). Bachelor's programmes run 6 to 8 semesters, and degrees are B.Sc., B.A. or B.Ed.
How Indian applicants get in
TUM says you need a higher education entrance qualification first. An Indian Class 12 certificate alone is not treated as one for direct entry, so the practical routes are a Studienkolleg year or one successful year of a Bachelor's in India, both needing Class 12 at 70% or above and an APS certificate. TUM maps its Bachelor's programmes to Studienkolleg courses, and the Feststellungsprüfung result combined with your home qualification forms a subject-specific entrance qualification. The Studienkolleg is taught in German.
TUM admits through one of four procedures depending on the programme: unrestricted, restricted (numerus clausus), aptitude assessment or aptitude recommendation. Read the programme page first, because the procedure sets your chances and the extra documents (some programmes use TestAS or subject tests).
Language
German-taught programmes need German proof; recognised proof for direct entry is DSH-2 or TestDaF with level 4 in all four parts. Physics, for instance, is German-taught with some English modules added. For the few English-taught Bachelor's you need an English certificate instead. Check TUM's language-certificates page.
Cost note
The Bachelor's tuition is the highest among the ten, and Munich is the priciest city for rent. For a 3-year degree starting in winter 2027/28, add roughly ₹14.9–22.1 lakh for tuition alone. Look at TUM's scholarship and waiver page, and our guide to scholarships for a Bachelor's, before ruling it out.
Best for
Strong PCM students aiming at engineering, computer science, natural sciences or management, with B2–C1 German and a budget for tuition. Think twice if your German is below B1 or your marks are borderline.

LMU Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität)
| City and state | Munich, Bavaria |
|---|---|
| Type | Comprehensive research university (U15) |
| QS 2027 | 61 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | None (semester contribution only) |
| How to apply | Direct to the LMU International Office with its own form and documents; LMU is not a uni-assist member |
| Deadline | 15 July (winter) for non-EU applicants; 15 January (summer) for programmes that admit in summer |
| APS | Applicants from China, India and Vietnam should submit the APS certificate |
| Language of Bachelor's | Mostly German |
What LMU is known for
Economics (47 in the world), biological sciences (=29), physics (=39) and computer science (=91), plus a very wide spread of humanities, social-science, law and medicine subjects that technical universities do not offer. It is a strong choice if your Class 12 stream is Commerce or Arts as well as science.
How Indian applicants get in
Applicants hold a foreign entrance qualification, so they apply to the International Office, not through the German school route. International applicants can apply for two programmes, but only one with restricted admission. For restricted programmes and for the Studienkolleg the deadline is 15 July. For some subjects an aptitude procedure runs through the institute separately, and passing it does not automatically register you at LMU, so you must still apply to the International Office.
LMU does not let you apply directly to its Studienkolleg: Studienkolleg places are at Studienkolleg München, with entrance tests in September and February (German and Mathematics, or only German for the G course). Its Studienkolleg guide also asks non-EU applicants for proof of a recent intensive German course (20 hours a week) to at least B2 level, completed within 12 months of the deadline.
Language
German-taught programmes need German proof (DSH-2, TestDaF 4x4 or equivalent; confirm the programme page). A small number of English-taught options exist.
Cost note
No tuition, so the main cost is living in Munich (see our cost guide). Budget for the blocked account of €11,904.
Best for
Students who want humanities, economics, natural sciences or social sciences in a top-ranked tuition-free university, and who can reach the language level.

Heidelberg University
| City and state | Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg |
|---|---|
| Type | Comprehensive research university (U15) |
| QS 2027 | 86 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | €1,500 a semester (₹1.62 lakh) |
| How to apply | Direct through the heiCO portal; the university assesses foreign certificates itself |
| Deadline | 1 June to 15 July for restricted programmes; some open programmes run later |
| APS | Required for Indian applicants |
| Language of Bachelor's | Mostly German |
What Heidelberg is known for
Biological sciences (28 in the world) and physics (=43), plus strong life sciences, medicine, law and humanities. It is Germany's oldest university and its research environment suits students who think of a Master's or PhD later.
How Indian applicants get in
Applications run through heiCO, with documents uploaded online. The university evaluates your school certificate itself, so there is no uni-assist step. As at every German university, Indian applicants need the APS certificate. As elsewhere, an Indian Class 12 usually needs a Studienkolleg year or one successful year of a Bachelor's before the degree.
Language
German-taught Bachelor's programmes need German proof; the usual bar is DSH-2 or TestDaF with 4 in all four parts. Confirm on the programme page.
Cost note
Add about ₹1.62 lakh a year for tuition. For three years of a Bachelor's, that is about ₹4.9 lakh in tuition alone.
Best for
Science, medicine-adjacent and humanities students who want a classic university town and can budget for €1,500 a semester.

RWTH Aachen University
| City and state | Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia |
|---|---|
| Type | Technical university (TU9) |
| QS 2027 | 104 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | None |
| How to apply | Direct through RWTHonline; documents uploaded online |
| Deadline | 15 July (restricted programmes); 20 October (open-admission programmes) |
| Entry grade rule | International applicants need a total grade of 2.5 or better on the German scale; a TestAS result can compensate |
| Language of Bachelor's | Mostly German |
What RWTH is known for
Mechanical engineering (25 in the world), materials science (29), electrical engineering (=53), and a very engineering-heavy profile with strong industry links. It is the pick for hands-on, technical students.
How Indian applicants get in
Apply through RWTHonline. Because international qualifications are converted to the German scale, RWTH says applicants below 2.5 may compensate with a TestAS result, so prepare for TestAS early if your converted grade is close to the line. Entry still follows the Indian route: 70% in Class 12, APS and a Studienkolleg or one-year route. Our TestAS preparation course covers the format.
Language
German-taught programmes need German proof; check the programme page for the accepted certificates and level.
Cost note
No tuition, and Aachen is cheaper to live in than Munich. It is one of the best value-for-money engineering options.
Best for
PCM students aiming at engineering and willing to take TestAS if needed.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
| City and state | Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg |
|---|---|
| Type | Technical university (TU9) |
| QS 2027 | 110 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | €1,500 a semester (₹1.62 lakh) |
| How to apply | Direct through the KIT International Students Office online portal (opens 15 May) |
| Deadline | 15 July (winter); 15 January (summer, where offered) |

What KIT is known for
Chemical engineering (25 in the world), materials science (=26), mechanical engineering (32) and electrical engineering (52), with a strong research culture in energy and engineering.
How Indian applicants get in
You apply through the KIT online portal. Bachelor's programmes with restricted admission also need a Hochschulstart registration for some applicants, and the portal asks you to enter the school-leaving qualification as a foreign one. KIT also runs a one-semester intensive German language course before the Bachelor's, application deadline 15 July. Its own FAQ recommends level B1–B2 and an entrance exam, and says applicants usually outnumber places.
Language
To enrol in a German-taught Bachelor's you need DSH-2 or TestDaF with 4 in all four parts. English-taught Bachelor's need proof of English instead, but they are few.
Cost note
€1,500 a semester applies to degree students, but KIT states that the tuition fee is not charged for the preparatory German language course. Check this on the portal when you apply.
Best for
Engineering and natural-science students who have a clear German plan and a budget for tuition.

Humboldt University of Berlin
| City and state | Berlin |
|---|---|
| Type | Comprehensive research university (U15) |
| QS 2027 | =140 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | None (Berlin semester contribution about €380) |
| How to apply | uni-assist reviews the school certificate and forwards the application |
| Deadline | 15 July |
| APS | Needed for Indian applicants |
| Language of Bachelor's | Mostly German |
What Humboldt is known for
Economics (=99 in the world), environmental sciences (=102) and a strong humanities, social-science and natural-science base in the centre of Berlin.
How Indian applicants get in
Upload your certificate through uni-assist, which checks it and forwards eligible applications. Indian applicants follow the usual route (70% in Class 12, APS, Studienkolleg or the one-year route), and your uni-assist application must be complete by the deadline.
Language
German-taught Bachelor's programmes need German proof; check each programme page for the level.
Cost note
No tuition, but Berlin rents have risen, so plan the blocked account carefully. uni-assist costs €75 for your first application and €30 for each extra.
Best for
Humanities, social-science and economics students who want a capital-city university without tuition.
Sources: Humboldt-Universität, undergraduate applications; uni-assist
Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin)
| City and state | Berlin |
|---|---|
| Type | Comprehensive research university (U15) |
| QS 2027 | =98 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | None (Berlin semester contribution about €380) |
| How to apply | VPD from uni-assist first, then FU Berlin's own portal |
| Deadline | 1 June to 15 July (same dates for international qualifications) |
| APS | Needed for Indian applicants |
| Language of Bachelor's | Mostly German |
What FU Berlin is known for
A broad international profile across humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and law, with one of the highest QS ranks among the Berlin universities.
How Indian applicants get in
You first request the preliminary documentation (VPD) from uni-assist, which confirms your qualification and what you must do, and then apply on FU Berlin's portal inside the 1 June to 15 July window. Because the VPD step takes time, apply to uni-assist well before the window opens.
Language
German-taught Bachelor's programmes need German proof; check the programme page.
Cost note
No tuition. uni-assist fees apply (€75 first application, €30 each additional).
Best for
Students with broad interests in humanities and social sciences who are comfortable with a large, international Berlin campus.
Sources: FU Berlin, application deadlines; uni-assist, applicants from India
Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin)
| City and state | Berlin |
|---|---|
| Type | Technical university (TU9) |
| QS 2027 | =158 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | None (Berlin semester contribution about €380) |
| How to apply | uni-assist VPD, then TU Berlin's portal |
| Deadline | Typically 15 July; open programmes may run later |
| APS | Needed for Indian applicants |
| Language of Bachelor's | Mostly German |
What TU Berlin is known for
Computer science (=76 in the world), electrical engineering (=44), chemical engineering (=37) and mechanical engineering (=42), with an urban campus near Berlin's start-up and industry scene.
How Indian applicants get in
Request the VPD from uni-assist, then apply on TU Berlin's portal. Treat the 15 July date as the safe target and check whether your programme is open or restricted, because open programmes can have later dates.
Language
German-taught Bachelor's programmes need German proof; check the programme page.
Cost note
No tuition, and among the cheapest ways to get a TU9 engineering education. Berlin housing is the main cost.
Best for
PCM students who want engineering or computer science in a TU9 university without tuition, and can handle the VPD and deadline steps.
Sources: TU Berlin, dates and deadlines; TU Berlin, preliminary review documentation (VPD); uni-assist
University of Freiburg
| City and state | Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg |
|---|---|
| Type | Comprehensive research university (U15) |
| QS 2027 | 245 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | €1,500 a semester (₹1.62 lakh) |
| How to apply | Direct, through the university's online portal |
| Deadline | 1 June to 15 July |
| APS | Required for Indian applicants |
| Language of Bachelor's | Mostly German; selected BA and BSc programmes in English |
What Freiburg is known for
Environment, forestry and the life sciences (agriculture and forestry =89 in the world), in a university city known for sustainability.
How Indian applicants get in
Apply through the university portal and add the APS certificate, which Freiburg requires from Indian applicants. Check the entrance-qualification rules for your programme, because the Indian route (70%, APS, Studienkolleg or one-year route) applies.
Language
German-taught programmes need German proof. Freiburg is one of the few public universities in this list offering selected English-taught BA and BSc programmes, so check the programme page for English requirements.
Cost note
Add about ₹4.9 lakh in tuition over three years. The English-taught options make it worth the budget for students who do not yet have German.
Best for
Students interested in environment, sustainability or life sciences who may start with English-taught options.

University of Mannheim
| City and state | Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg |
|---|---|
| Type | Public university, strong in business and social sciences |
| QS 2027 | =425 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | €1,500 a semester (₹1.62 lakh) |
| How to apply | Direct to the university; it does not work with uni-assist |
| Deadline | 1 June to 15 July (some humanities programmes to 31 August) |
| APS | Original APS certificate required |
| German proof | Proof of C1 German is due by the deadline |
What Mannheim is known for
Economics (=56 in the world) and business and management (=104), with a very focused business, economics and social-science profile and a compact campus.
How Indian applicants get in
Apply directly, not through uni-assist. The original APS certificate is required, and C1 German proof must be submitted by the deadline, so plan your German test well before July. Because it ranks applicants where demand is high, a strong converted grade matters.
Language
C1 German by the deadline is the hard rule for German-taught programmes, which makes Mannheim a poor fit if your German is still at B1.
Cost note
€1,500 a semester. Mannheim is cheaper to live in than Munich.
Best for
Commerce-stream students aiming at business, economics or social sciences with strong marks and C1 German.
Source: University of Mannheim, applying from outside the EU
Three more universities worth adding
These three fill gaps in the ten: a tuition-free university that asks for TestAS, a public university of applied sciences with English-taught Bachelor's, and a private English-taught university.
University of Cologne
| City and state | Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia |
|---|---|
| QS 2027 | 269 |
| Tuition (non-EU) | None |
| How to apply | Through uni-assist for non-EU applicants |
| Deadline | 15 July (winter) |
| TestAS | Required for all non-EU applicants to undergraduate programmes, submitted with the uni-assist application |
| Language of Bachelor's | German (all Bachelor's programmes) |
Why include it
Cologne uses TestAS as a selection criterion for all non-EU applicants to undergraduate programmes, and the certificate goes to uni-assist with the application. Applicants from India also need the APS certificate. Because an Indian Class 12 is not a direct entrance qualification, Indian applicants reach Cologne through a Studienkolleg (Cologne's “Studienstart International plus”) or the one-year route. TestAS here is a firm rule, not a compensation option, so plan it earlier than for most universities in this guide.
Best for
Students who have already sat TestAS, want a large tuition-free university, and have C1 German. Book TestAS early: see our TestAS course.

Hochschule Rhein-Waal (Kleve and Kamp-Lintfort)
| State | North Rhine-Westphalia |
|---|---|
| Type | Public university of applied sciences |
| Tuition (non-EU) | None |
| Language | English-taught Bachelor's programmes |
Why include it
It is the example our guide uses for tuition-free English-taught Bachelor's options. Being a Fachhochschule, its degrees are practice-oriented. Confirm each programme's intake, entrance route and language requirements on its page, and use the DAAD International Programmes database with "English only" as the language filter.
Best for
Students who do not yet have German but want a tuition-free, practical, English-taught degree.

Constructor University, Bremen
| State | Bremen |
|---|---|
| Type | Private university |
| Tuition (non-EU) | Fee-charging; check the university's current fee page |
| Language | English-taught Bachelor's programmes |
Why include it
It is the standard example of a private English-taught option. Because it charges fees, run the five checks for private universities (state recognition, accreditation, full-time on-campus, fee proof for the visa, awarding institution) before you pay.
Best for
Students who can pay and want English as the language of instruction from day one.

How admission really works for Indian Bachelor's applicants
There is no central admission. Each university and programme sets its own rules, but Indian applicants face the same four building blocks.
- Entrance qualification. Class 12 is not treated as equal to the German Abitur. From Winter Semester 2026/27 you need at least 70% in Class 12 for APS India's two undergraduate pathways: a Studienkolleg year, or one successful academic year of a Bachelor's at a recognised Indian institution. A valid JEE Advanced result is the exception DAAD India names. Our guides to eligibility after 12th and the Studienkolleg explain both routes, and our APS certificate service checks your documents.
- Admission type. Programmes are open, restricted (numerus clausus) or use an aptitude procedure. Restricted programmes rank applicants; open programmes mostly check your documents.
- Language. German-taught programmes need German proof. Direct entry generally needs C1 (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4); Studienkolleg entry is usually B1–B2. English-taught programmes need an English certificate. See our guides to German for a Bachelor's and the IELTS score for Germany, and our IELTS and German courses.
- Tests and documents. TestAS (required at Cologne; a compensation route at RWTH), the APS certificate, your SOP/LOM and CV. Read our guides to TestAS, the SOP/LOM and the CV, or use our SOP, LOM and CV services.
The Studienkolleg year in one table
| Class 12 stream | Studienkolleg course | Main subjects | Leads to |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCM | T-Kurs | German, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Informatics | Engineering, computer science, natural sciences |
| PCB | M-Kurs (some colleges use the T-Kurs) | German, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology | Biology and life-science degrees |
| Commerce | W-Kurs | German, Mathematics, Economics, Business | Business, economics, social sciences |
| Arts | G-Kurs (S-Kurs for languages) | German, History, German literature, Sociology | Humanities, languages, social sciences |
Your target degree, not your stream alone, decides the course, and colleges name courses differently. The FSP result is a subject-restricted qualification, so choose the course that matches your degree. See our Studienkolleg guide.

How to build your shortlist in 7 steps
- Search programmes, not universities. Use the DAAD International Programmes database and each university's degree-programme list; filter by Bachelor's and language.
- Read the admission regulations, not the marketing page: admission type, minimum marks, tests and language.
- Match your stream to the course. A PCM student cannot apply for a Commerce Studienkolleg course, and the subject-restricted FSP limits your degrees.
- Check your German. If you are below B1, prioritise English-taught options or build German first.
- Check money and city. Tuition (TUM and Baden-Württemberg), rent and the €11,904 blocked account. Munich costs far more than Aachen. See the cost of a Bachelor's in Germany.
- Check deadlines and route. uni-assist or the university portal, and whether APS is needed at application. See APS and the application process.
- Balance the list. As a rule of thumb: one or two reach options, two match options and one or two safe options. Each extra uni-assist application costs €30, so quality beats quantity.

The mix by profile
| Your profile | Mix to consider | Checks that matter most |
|---|---|---|
| PCM, 70%+, B2 German, can pay tuition | Reach: TUM or KIT. Match: RWTH, TU Berlin. Safe: a Fachhochschule in your field | Subject-restricted FSP; TestAS if the converted grade is borderline |
| PCM, tuition-free only | Reach: RWTH. Match: TU Berlin. Safe: a Fachhochschule | VPD timing at TU Berlin; open vs restricted programmes |
| PCB, 70%+ | Reach: Heidelberg or LMU. Match: Freiburg, TUM life sciences. Safe: a Fachhochschule | M-Kurs allocation; language level |
| Commerce, strong marks, C1 German | Reach: Mannheim or LMU. Match: Humboldt. Safe: Cologne (if TestAS done) | C1 German by the deadline; TestAS |
| Arts, humanities interest | Reach: LMU. Match: FU Berlin, Humboldt. Safe: a Fachhochschule | G-Kurs availability; language level |
| No German yet | Freiburg (English options), Rhein-Waal, Constructor | English certificate; budget |
Private and English-taught options: five checks before you pay
For all English-taught options, see English-taught Bachelor's in Germany.
- State recognition. The university must be state-recognised. The Hochschulkompass lists only state and state-recognised institutions.
- Programme accreditation. Check the programme in the Accreditation Council's database.
- Full-time, on campus. The German Missions require admission to a full-time degree programme in presence at a German university. See the German student visa from India.
- Fees before the visa. Private applicants must show the fee and proof of payment for the first year, or a substantial deposit.
- Awarding institution. Get in writing which institution awards the degree.
Private universities that work with Yastudy fund our counselling, so it is free for you; we always say which they are, and public options come first whenever you are eligible.

8 shortlisting mistakes we see every intake
- Applying only to the top names and leaving no safe option.
- Ignoring the 70% rule and finding out at the APS stage.
- Choosing the wrong Studienkolleg course, which locks the FSP to the wrong subject group.
- Missing a test: TestAS for Cologne, or German C1 proof by the Mannheim deadline.
- Assuming tuition-free everywhere: TUM and four Baden-Württemberg universities charge.
- Using the wrong route: uni-assist at TUM, Humboldt, FU and TU Berlin; the university's own portal at the others.
- Choosing by city name without checking rent: Munich costs far more than Aachen.
- Writing one generic SOP/LOM for every programme. Committees can tell.

Best universities in Germany for a Bachelor's: 20 questions Indian students ask
Best universities
Which is the best university in Germany for a Bachelor's?
By QS 2027, TUM (25th), LMU Munich (61st) and Heidelberg (86th) rank highest in Germany. The best university for you is the one whose programme fits your stream, marks, German level and budget.
Which is the best university in Germany for engineering?
TUM leads mechanical and electrical engineering (both 19th in QS 2026 by subject), followed by RWTH Aachen (25th in mechanical) and KIT (32nd). KIT leads chemical engineering (25th).
Which is the best for computer science?
TUM (26th in the world in QS 2026), then TU Berlin (=76), LMU (=91), KIT (110) and RWTH (=114).
Which is the best for business or economics?
LMU leads economics (47th), then Mannheim (=56th). In business and management, TUM (=91) and Mannheim (=104) lead.
Does ranking matter for jobs in Germany?
Less than in India. Employers look at your field, German, internships and skills. See after your Bachelor's in Germany.
Tuition, routes and deadlines
Which of the ten are tuition-free for Indian students?
LMU, RWTH, Humboldt, FU Berlin and TU Berlin charge non-EU students no tuition. TUM, Heidelberg, KIT, Freiburg and Mannheim do. You still pay a semester contribution everywhere. For funding, see education loans for a Bachelor's.
How much is tuition at TUM for a Bachelor's?
From winter 2027/28, new non-EU Bachelor's students pay €2,300 or €3,400 a semester, depending on the programme (previously €2,000 or €3,000; students already enrolled keep their rate). TUM offers waivers for first-semester students who cannot cover the fees.
Which universities use uni-assist?
TUM, Humboldt, FU Berlin, TU Berlin and Cologne use uni-assist for non-EU Bachelor's applicants. LMU, Heidelberg, RWTH, KIT, Freiburg and Mannheim take applications on their own portals.
Do I need the APS certificate for every university?
Yes. Indian applicants need APS for universities and the student visa. LMU, KIT, Freiburg and Mannheim state it explicitly.
What is the deadline for Winter 2027/28?
15 July 2027 at most of the ten. Heidelberg, FU Berlin, Freiburg and Mannheim run 1 June–15 July; TUM opens 15 May. Re-check each page in spring 2027.
When should I apply for APS?
For Winter 2027/28, apply between December 2026 and February 2027, because APS says it cannot give a fixed processing time.
How many universities should I apply to?
A balanced list is a handful: one or two reach, two match and one or two safe. Each extra uni-assist application costs €30.
Eligibility, language and tests
What Class 12 percentage do I need?
APS India requires at least 70% for both undergraduate pathways from Winter Semester 2026/27. Marks below 70% close both standard routes.
Can I get direct admission after Class 12?
Not as a rule. A Class 12 certificate does not give direct admission; the exception is a valid JEE Advanced result. Most students need a Studienkolleg year or one successful year of a Bachelor's in India.
What German level do I need?
For direct entry, generally C1 (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4). A Studienkolleg usually needs B1–B2 at entry. Mannheim wants C1 proof by the deadline.
Are there English-taught Bachelor's?
Few: about 420, around 4% of Bachelor's programmes (DAAD, summer 2025). Freiburg has selected English-taught BA and BSc programmes, Hochschule Rhein-Waal is tuition-free and English-taught, and Constructor University is private.
Is TestAS compulsory?
Not everywhere. The University of Cologne requires it for Indian applicants, and RWTH lets TestAS compensate for a converted grade below 2.5. Check the programme page.
Choosing your list
Is a Fachhochschule worth it?
Yes for job-focused students: practice-oriented degrees with a practical semester, and many are tuition-free.
Are private universities good?
Some are, if state-recognised, accredited and full-time on campus. Compare fees against public options first.
Working with Yastudy
Can Yastudy build my shortlist?
Yes. Start with a free eligibility check, or choose a plan: Essential ₹24,999, Advantage ₹44,999 or Premium ₹79,999 for public universities and Studienkollegs. Applying to private universities is free. See plans and prices →
