Germany Student Visa Extension 2026–27: Residence Permit for Study, Documents, Fees & Timelines

Your student visa gets you into Germany; the residence permit lets you stay until you graduate. This guide shows how to convert your visa, when to apply in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Aachen, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, the documents and fees, what protects you while you wait (the Fiktionsbescheinigung), the study-progress rules for extensions, and what comes after your degree. It includes a free planner for your dates and documents.

Quick answer

You don’t extend the visa itself: before it expires, apply to your local foreigners authority for a residence permit for study (Section 16b), normally issued for two years and extended while you make study progress. Bring your passport, photo, enrolment certificate, proof of €992 a month (2026), health insurance and registration certificate; extensions also need your transcript or study prognosis. Fees are €100 for the first card and €93 for an extension (€96 for up to three months). Apply in time and your permit is treated as continuing until the decision; apply late and that’s at the authority’s discretion. After graduating you can get up to 18 months to look for a job.

Student visa extension in Germany: the short version

You don't extend the visa itself. Before your entry visa expires, you apply to your local foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde) for a residence permit for study under Section 16b of the Residence Act.[1][2] That permit is then extended as long as you're making progress towards your degree.

Key takeaways

  • Apply before your visa expires. If you apply in time, your current permit is treated as continuing until the authority decides.[3]
  • Normally two years at a time: since March 2024 the law says a study permit is "in der Regel" issued for two years, at first issue and on extension.[4]
  • Funds: €992 a month in 2026 (€11,904 a year), plus health insurance and your registration certificate.[5]
  • Fees: €100 for the first card; €93 for an extension (€96 if only up to three months).[6][7]
  • Extensions need study progress: transcripts and sometimes a statement from your university.[5][8]
  • Appointments are scarce in big cities, so apply early.[9]

Converting your visa into a residence permit

  1. Register your addressYour registration certificate is one of the documents, and Frankfurt asks you to register before applying.[8] See our guide to the Anmeldung certificate.
  2. Enrol and arrange insuranceYou'll need your enrolment certificate and proof of health insurance.[5]
  3. Apply before your visa expiresMany cities now take applications online: Berlin only online,[5] Munich online or by post,[6] Frankfurt and Stuttgart through online portals.[8][10]
  4. Attend your appointment if invitedBerlin allocates appointments after checking your online documents, and says they're in short supply.[9]
  5. Collect your cardThe electronic residence permit (eAT) takes about 4–6 weeks in Berlin;[5] in Stuttgart you can book pickup at the earliest six weeks after applying.[11]

Universities can't speed this up: TUM says it "can neither expedite nor directly influence the processing of applications".[12]

Karlsruhe charges no fee to holders of publicly funded scholarships.[13] The funds rule matches the blocked account in our proof of funds guide; in some cases, student job income can count as funds.

    While you wait: the Fiktionsbescheinigung

    • Apply before expiry and you're covered. Under Section 81(4) of the Residence Act, if you apply for an extension before your permit expires, it is treated as continuing until the foreigners authority decides.[3]
    • The certificate: authorities issue a Fiktionsbescheinigung as proof (€13 in Berlin), but only if your stay is still lawful when you apply.[14] In Berlin, the PDF receipt from your online application already confirms your permit continues within Germany.[5]
    • Apply late and it's discretionary: after expiry, the authority may order the continued validity only to avoid undue hardship.[3]
    • Travel: Berlin says journeys abroad and re-entry are possible with a Fiktionsbescheinigung for an existing permit,[14] but RWTH's page gives conflicting advice. Confirm with your authority before you book a flight home.[15]

Study progress, changing course and the 10-year limit

    • Progress matters at every extension. The permit can be extended if you haven't finished but can still finish in a reasonable time.[4] Karlsruhe generally accepts exceeding the average study duration by up to three semesters.[16]
    • Changing your programme changes the purpose of your stay, but under the law since 1 March 2024 a new permit can normally be claimed for it, as a Bavarian administrative court confirmed in 2025; the authority still checks that you can finish in reasonable time.[17] Frankfurt asks for a university statement if you change subject after the 3rd semester.[8]
    • Overall limit: total study time may not exceed 10 years.[8][17]
    • Working limits stay the same: 140 full days or 280 half days a year, with student-assistant jobs exempt.[1]

After graduation: job search permit and EU Blue Card

    • 18-month job search permit: after graduating you can get a residence permit valid for up to 18 months to look for qualified employment; you may take any job in that time, and it can't be renewed.[18]
    • EU Blue Card: with a job paying at least the salary threshold you have a legal claim to a Blue Card.[19] In 2026 the threshold is €50,700, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and graduates whose degree is less than three years old (with Federal Employment Agency approval).[20]
    • Settlement permit: Blue Card holders can settle after 27 months with A1 German, or 21 months with B1.[20] See our guide to German for permanent residence.

8 residence permit mistakes international students make

    1. Applying after the visa expires.
    2. Waiting for an appointment instead of submitting the application online first.
    3. An empty blocked account at extension time, with no other proof of funds.
    4. Travelling home on a certificate without checking re-entry.
    5. No transcript or study prognosis for an extension.
    6. Changing programme without telling the foreigners authority.
    7. Missing the address registration, so the documents don't match.
    8. Losing the PIN letter for the residence card.

Student residence permit in Germany: 14 questions Indian students ask

    Converting and extending

How do I extend my student visa in Germany?

You don't extend the visa itself: before it expires, you apply to your local foreigners authority for a residence permit for study (Section 16b). Later you extend that permit as long as you're making study progress.

When should I apply for my residence permit?

Before your visa or permit expires; that's what counts legally. RWTH advises applying for an extension about three months before expiry, and Berlin accepts applications at the earliest four months before.

How long is a German student residence permit valid?

Normally two years, at first issue and on extension, or shorter if your course is shorter. Munich says it usually issues three years.

Can I apply for the residence permit online?

In many cities, yes: Berlin accepts applications only online, Munich online or by post, and Frankfurt and Stuttgart through online portals.

How long does the residence permit take?

It varies widely: Munich lists processing times of up to 12 months, and RWTH says it can take up to six weeks after you apply. The card itself takes about 4–6 weeks to produce.

    Documents and fees

What documents do I need for the student residence permit?

Passport and visa, biometric photo, application form, enrolment certificate, proof of €992 a month (2026), health insurance and your registration certificate. Extensions also need proof of study progress.

How much does the residence permit cost?

€100 for the first permit card and €93 for an extension of more than three months (€96 for up to three months). Berlin charges €13 for a Fiktionsbescheinigung.

How much money do I need to extend my student permit?

€992 a month in 2026 (€11,904 a year), shown by a blocked account, a formal obligation letter, a scholarship or a job contract.

What if I fail exams or my studies take longer?

Extensions depend on progress. Exceeding the average study duration by up to three semesters is generally accepted in Karlsruhe; beyond that, you need a convincing study plan and your university's support.

    Waiting, travel and after

    What is a Fiktionsbescheinigung?

A certificate that your current permit continues while the authority decides on your application. You get automatic protection only if you applied before your permit (not a Schengen visa) expired.

Can I travel to India while my permit is being processed?

Berlin says re-entry is possible with a Fiktionsbescheinigung for an existing permit, but advice differs between authorities. Confirm with yours before you book.

What happens if my visa expires before I apply?

You lose the automatic protection. The authority may still order continued validity to avoid undue hardship, but it's at its discretion. Contact it immediately.

Can I change my course or university on a student permit?

Yes, normally. Since March 2024 the law allows a new study permit for a changed programme, within an overall limit of 10 years of study. Tell your foreigners authority.

    What happens after I graduate?

You can get a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for a qualified job, and with a job offer above the threshold (€50,700, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and graduates of the last three years, with Federal Employment Agency approval, in 2026) you have a claim to an EU Blue Card.
