What the Goethe A1 exam is, and who needs it

The Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 is the German exam for adults at level A1. It is set by the Goethe-Institut, which is known in India as Max Mueller Bhavan. The exam is conducted and marked in the same way all over the world, so a certificate earned in Pune or Kolkata means the same as one earned in Berlin.

A1 is the first level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The Goethe-Institut says that passing the exam shows you can do three things:

  • Communicate in a simple way, introduce yourself and answer basic questions about yourself.
  • Use familiar, everyday expressions and simple sentences about yourself and your family, shopping, work or school, and where you live.
  • Understand short, simple conversations in everyday situations when the other person speaks slowly and clearly.

Who needs the German A1 certificate

  • Spouses joining a partner in Germany. The German Missions in India ask for proof of A1 German in most spouse visa cases, with a certificate from the Goethe-Institut, telc or ÖSD. The Goethe-Institut itself describes this exam as the language certificate for the visa for spousal reunification.
  • Au pairs. You need German at A1 or above, and you must be at least 18 and under 27 when you apply.
  • Opportunity Card applicants. German A1 or English B2 is the minimum language level for the points route of the Chancenkarte.
  • Students on a longer route. A1 is the first step if you are heading for B1 for Ausbildung or B2 for nursing. See which level each route needs in the level table on our main German page.

A1 on its own is not enough for Ausbildung, where B1 is the usual level, or for nurses, who need B2 for recognition. If that is your goal, plan the whole route now: the German B1 course and the German B2 course pages explain what those levels involve.

Start Deutsch 1 or Fit in Deutsch 1

The Goethe-Institut runs two A1 exams. Start Deutsch 1 is for adults, with a recommended age of 16 or older. Fit in Deutsch 1 is the A1 exam for young people aged 10 to 16. It has 60 points and you pass with 30. The age limits are recommendations, not fixed rules. For a visa, an Ausbildung or a job, Start Deutsch 1 is the exam you take, and it is the one this guide describes.

Goethe A1 exam pattern, part by part

The exam has a written part and an oral part. The written part takes 65 minutes with no break: listening first, then reading, then writing. Speaking is a separate 15-minute exam in a small group.

PartTimeTasksRaw pointsPoints (/100)
Hören (listening)About 20 minutes3 tasks, 15 questions1525
Lesen (reading)25 minutes3 tasks, 15 questions1525
Schreiben (writing)20 minutes2 tasks: a form and a short message1525
Sprechen (speaking)15 mins, in a group3 tasks1525

In listening and reading you first mark your answers on the question paper and then copy them to an answer sheet. You get about 5 minutes inside the exam time for this. Only the answer sheet is marked, so copy carefully.

Hören: the listening part

You hear short recordings and answer 15 questions. The recordings are everyday conversations, public announcements and telephone messages, spoken slowly and clearly.

TaskWhat you hearQuestionsPlayed
Teil 1Short everyday conversations6 questions, choose a, b or cTwice
Teil 2Public announcements, for example in a shop or a station4 statements, Richtig or FalschOnce
Teil 3Telephone messages: voicemail messages and recorded announcements5 questions, choose a, b or cTwice

Sample task in the style of Teil 1

Sie hören: „Entschuldigung, wann fährt der nächste Zug nach Köln?“ „Um 14 Uhr 30, von Gleis 5.“

You hear: "Excuse me, when does the next train to Cologne leave?" "At 2.30 pm, from platform 5."

Wann fährt der Zug? a) Um 13.30 Uhr   b) Um 14.30 Uhr   c) Um 15.30 Uhr

Answer: b. The question asks only for the time, so ignore the platform number.

Sample task in the style of Teil 2

Sie hören im Supermarkt: „Liebe Kundinnen und Kunden, heute im Angebot: ein Kilo Äpfel für nur 1,99 Euro. Sie finden die Äpfel im Erdgeschoss, gleich neben dem Eingang.“

You hear in a supermarket: "Dear customers, on offer today: one kilo of apples for only 1.99 euros. You will find the apples on the ground floor, right next to the entrance."

Die Äpfel sind im ersten Stock. Richtig oder Falsch?

Answer: Falsch. The apples are on the ground floor (im Erdgeschoss). You hear this announcement only once, so read the statement before it starts and wait for the place.

Sample task in the style of Teil 3

Sie hören am Telefon: „Hallo Maria, hier ist Jan. Ich kann heute leider nicht um sechs kommen, ich muss länger arbeiten. Treffen wir uns um halb acht vor dem Kino? Bis später!“

You hear on the phone: "Hello Maria, this is Jan. Sorry, I can't come at six today, I have to work longer. Shall we meet at half past seven in front of the cinema? See you later!"

Wann treffen sich Maria und Jan? a) Um 18.00 Uhr   b) Um 19.30 Uhr   c) Um 20.30 Uhr

Answer: b. Six o'clock is the time Jan cancels, and "halb acht" is 7.30, not 8.30. The message gives two times, and the question wants the new one.

How to score in listening

  • Read the question and the three options before the recording starts. You get a few seconds for this. Underline the question word: wann, wo, was, wie viel.
  • Listen for numbers, times, days and prices. Many A1 listening questions turn on one of these.
  • In Teil 2 the announcement is played only once. Read the statement first, then listen for the one fact it mentions.
  • German times can trap you. "Halb drei" is 2.30, not 3.30, and "14 Uhr 30" is 2.30 pm.
  • If you miss an answer, mark your best guess and move on. A wrong answer costs nothing, but a blank earns nothing either.

Lesen: the reading part

You read short everyday texts and answer 15 questions in 25 minutes. Nothing here is longer than a short e-mail.

TaskWhat you readQuestions
Teil 1Two short personal messages, such as an e-mail or a note5 statements, Richtig or Falsch
Teil 2Pairs of short texts, such as adverts or websites, for a given situation5 questions, choose a or b
Teil 3Signs and notices, such as opening hours or a note on a door5 statements, Richtig or Falsch

Sample task in the style of Teil 1

„Hallo Anna, ich komme am Samstag mit dem Zug nach München. Ich bin um 15 Uhr am Hauptbahnhof. Kannst du mich abholen? Am Sonntag fahre ich wieder nach Hause. Viele Grüße, Paul“

"Hello Anna, I am coming to Munich by train on Saturday. I will be at the main station at 3 pm. Can you pick me up? On Sunday I go home again. Best wishes, Paul"

1. Paul kommt mit dem Auto. Richtig oder Falsch?
2. Paul bleibt bis Sonntag. Richtig oder Falsch?

Answers: 1 is Falsch, because he comes by train (mit dem Zug). 2 is Richtig, because he goes home on Sunday.

Sample task in the style of Teil 2

Situation: you want to learn German in the evening, after work. Which advert do you read?

a) Sprachschule Lingua: Deutschkurse am Vormittag, Montag bis Freitag, 9 bis 12 Uhr.

b) Sprachschule Aktiv: Deutschkurse am Abend, Dienstag und Donnerstag, 18 bis 20 Uhr.

Answer: b. Both adverts are for German courses, so the word "Deutschkurse" does not help you. The time of day decides: am Vormittag is in the morning, am Abend is in the evening.

Sample task in the style of Teil 3

An der Tür einer Arztpraxis: „Praxis Dr. Weber. Sprechzeiten: Montag bis Freitag, 8 bis 12 Uhr.“

On the door of a doctor's practice: "Dr. Weber's practice. Consulting hours: Monday to Friday, 8 am to 12 noon."

Am Samstag ist die Praxis geöffnet. Richtig oder Falsch?

Answer: Falsch. The notice says Monday to Friday, so the practice is closed on Saturday.

How to score in reading

  • Read the statement first, then find the one line in the text that answers it. You do not need to understand every word.
  • Watch the small words that change the meaning: nicht, kein, nur, auch, erst, schon.
  • In Teil 2, underline what the situation asks for. If you want to rent a bicycle, an advert that sells bicycles is the wrong answer, even though both mention bicycles.
  • Days, dates and times decide many Richtig or Falsch questions in Teil 3.
  • Spend about 6 to 7 minutes on each task, and keep the last 5 minutes for copying your answers to the answer sheet.

Schreiben: the writing part

Writing takes 20 minutes and has two tasks. It carries 15 raw points: 5 for the form and 10 for the short message.

TaskWhat you doPoints
Teil 1You read a short text about a person and fill in 5 gaps in a form, for example a registration or a booking form5: one for each gap
Teil 2You write a short message of about 30 words to a person or an office, and cover three given points10, marked by two examiners

For the form, the information is always in the short text above it. Typical gaps are the family name, the number of people, the date of arrival, the postcode or the way of paying. Copy names and numbers exactly.

Sample task in the style of Teil 1

You read: your friend Ravi Kumar wants to book a German course at a language school in Berlin. He is 24 years old, comes from India and lives at Gartenstraße 12 in 10115 Berlin. He wants to take the evening course and pay by bank transfer. Fill in the five gaps in the registration form for him.

Familienname: Kumar  ·  Alter: 24  ·  Postleitzahl: 10115  ·  Kurs: Abendkurs  ·  Zahlungsweise: Überweisung

Learn the words that label the gaps, because the form does not explain them: Familienname, Vorname, Geburtsdatum, Wohnort, Straße, Hausnummer, Postleitzahl, Land, Beruf, Zahlungsweise.

How the short message is marked

Two examiners mark your message separately, and your result is the average of their marks. Each of the three points in the task earns up to 3 points: 3 if the point is covered and can be understood, 1.5 if it is only partly covered, and 0 if it is missing or cannot be understood. The tenth point is for the form of the message, which means a greeting and a closing that suit the reader. That is why a message with simple grammar and all three points scores higher than an elegant message with one point missing.

Sample task in the style of Teil 2 (Formal)

Task: you are going to Hamburg in May. Write to the tourist information office. Say why you are writing, ask for information about museums, and ask where you can get a city map.

Priya Sharma

Sample task in the style of Teil 2 (Informal)

Task: your friend Lena has invited you to her birthday party on Saturday. Write to her. Say thank you, say that you cannot come and why, and suggest another day to meet.

Liebe Lena,

vielen Dank für die Einladung. Leider kann ich am Samstag nicht kommen, ich muss arbeiten. Hast du am Sonntag Zeit? Dann können wir zusammen Kaffee trinken.

Viele Grüße
Priya

How to score in writing

  • Cover all three points. One short sentence for each is enough. A missing point costs more than a grammar mistake.
  • Always write a greeting and a closing. Use "Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren" and "Mit freundlichen Grüßen" for an office, and "Liebe Anna" or "Lieber Tom" and "Viele Grüße" for a friend.
  • Stay with the formal Sie or the informal du from start to finish. Do not mix them.
  • Keep the verb in second position in statements: "Ich komme im Mai nach Hamburg."
  • Write every noun with a capital letter: Stadtplan, Museum, Hilfe.
  • Write your message straight onto the answer sheet. There is no time to write it twice.

Sprechen: the speaking part

Speaking is a group exam with up to four candidates and two examiners. It lasts 15 minutes in total, about 5 minutes for each task, and there is no preparation time. It carries 15 raw points: 3 for Teil 1 and 6 each for Teil 2 and Teil 3.

TaskWhat you doPoints
Teil 1You introduce yourself using keywords: name, age, country, where you live, languages, job, hobby. The examiner then asks you to spell a word and to say a number.3
Teil 2You get a card with a word on an everyday theme. You ask another candidate a question with that word and answer the question you are asked.6
Teil 3You get a card with a picture of an everyday object. You make a request with it, and you respond to another candidate's request.6

Sample answers for all three tasks

Teil 1, introducing yourself

Frage: Was isst du zum Frühstück?
Antwort: Ich esse Brot und trinke Tee.

Teil 3, picture of a pen

Bitte: Kann ich bitte den Kugelschreiber haben?
Antwort: Ja, gern. Hier, bitte.

How to score in speaking

  • Learn your introduction by heart, and practise spelling your name and your city with the German alphabet.
  • Practise numbers until they are automatic: your phone number, your postcode, your house number and your age.
  • In Teil 2, a simple W-question is enough: Was, Wann, Wo, Wie, Wer. "Wann stehst du auf?" is all you need for a card that says "aufstehen".
  • In Teil 3, two patterns cover many cards: "Kann ich bitte ... haben?" and "Kannst du bitte ...?" Answer with "Ja, gern" or "Nein, tut mir leid."
  • If you do not understand, say so in German: "Wie bitte?" or "Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?" This is normal and it is better than silence.
  • Speak in full sentences and speak up. The examiners mark whether you get your message across, not whether your accent is perfect.

Goethe A1 marks: how the exam is scored

Each of the four parts has 15 raw points. The raw points are multiplied by 1.66 to give a result out of 100. The written parts together make 75 points and speaking makes 25.

PartRaw pointsHow they are earnedOut of 100
Hören151 point for each correct answer25
Lesen151 point for each correct answer25
Schreiben155 for the form, 10 for the message25
Sprechen153 for Teil 1, 6 for Teil 2, 6 for Teil 325
Total60100

The pass mark

You pass with 60 of 100 points, which is 36 of the 60 raw points, and you must have taken all four parts. There is no separate pass mark for each part at A1. A weak part can be balanced by a strong one, but only up to a point: speaking is worth 25 points at most, so you need at least 35 points from the written parts, which is 21 of their 45 raw points, to be able to pass.

Grades on certificate
  • 90–100: sehr gut (Very good)
  • 80–89: gut (Good)
  • 70–79: befriedigend (Satisfactory)
  • 60–69: ausreichend (Pass)
  • 0–59: nicht bestanden (Fail)
Note on failing

If you score 58.1, it rounds down to 58 (not passed). Missing the pass mark by one raw point is a single listening question. This is why we tell students never to leave a question blank.

Goethe A1 exam fee in India

On 2 October 2026 the Goethe-Institut India listed the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 at ₹9,400 including 18% GST. The same fee was shown for every city and every date on the list.

Goethe examFee in India, including GST
A1 (Start Deutsch 1)₹9,400
A2₹10,600
B1₹18,800 for all four modules, or ₹4,700 for one module
B2₹21,200 for all four modules, or ₹5,300 for one module

Fees can change, so check the Goethe-Institut India exam page before you book. A few more costs are worth knowing:

  • If you are ill and miss the exam, you need a medical certificate and must contact the institute within two weeks. Rescheduling then costs 25% of the exam fee.
  • A replacement for a lost paper certificate costs ₹2,900, and only for exams taken in the last ten years.
  • The exam fee is separate from any course fee. You pay it to the Goethe-Institut when you book, not to your German institute.

The course fee for the Yastudy German A1 course is ₹14,000. If you plan to continue after A1, the combos on the German course fees page cost less than paying level by level.

Goethe A1 exam centres and dates in India

On 2 October 2026 the Goethe-Institut India exam page offered A1 exam dates in these places: New Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata. Dates were listed for October, November and December 2026.

The exam is not offered from home. The Goethe-Institut states that taking part is only possible on site at one of its exam centres. Some centres also run the exam on the institute's laptops: you do listening, reading and writing on the laptop, and speaking stays face to face with two examiners.

Yastudy classes are live online, so you can study from any city and travel only for the exam. If there is no centre in your city, choose the nearest one on the list and plan the journey when you book.

How to book the Goethe A1 exam

You do not need to finish a course before you book. The Goethe-Institut lets anyone register, though it recommends a preparation course.

  1. Open the A1 exam page on the Goethe-Institut India website and look at the list of exam dates.
  2. Filter by city, month and format (paper or computer), and pick a date.
  3. Sign in to Mein Goethe.de, or create an account. This is the account where you will later see your result.
  4. Enter your details exactly as they appear in your passport: surname, first names and date of birth.
  5. Pay the exam fee online to confirm the booking.
  6. Wait for the invitation. It tells you the place, reporting time, what to bring and when the result will be ready.
Note: Book only with the Goethe-Institut or with an exam centre named on the Goethe-Institut India website. Fraudulent offers that promise access to exams or certificates are not valid.

Exam day: what to bring and what is not allowed

The week before the exam

  • Read your invitation again: the address, the reporting time and what to bring.
  • Check that your passport is valid and that the name on your booking matches it letter for letter.
  • Sit one full practice paper with a timer, and a second one two days later.
  • Say your introduction aloud every day, and spell your name and your city.
  • Write one short message a day and count the three points each time.
  • If you are travelling to another city, plan to arrive the evening before. The listening part starts on time for everyone.

What to bring

  • Your valid passport, in the original. The Goethe-Institut India states that a passport is the only accepted ID for its language exams.
  • Whatever else your invitation lists. Read it the day before.

What is not allowed

  • Mobile phones, smartwatches, mini-computers and any other device that can record or play back.
  • Dictionaries, grammar books and prepared notes.

These items may not be taken into the exam room at all, and breaking the rule leads to exclusion from the exam. You can leave the room to use the restroom, and the invigilator notes the time you are away.

How the day runs

The written parts come first and run for 65 minutes without a break: listening, reading and then writing. The speaking exam is separate. You are called in a group of up to four candidates, and it takes about 15 minutes. Arrive early, because a late start in listening cannot be made up: the recording plays for everyone at the same time.

The exam rules allow the speaking exam to be held on a different day, up to 14 days from the written exam. Check both times in your invitation before you book travel.

If you have special needs

The Goethe-Institut adapts the exam for candidates with special needs, for example with accessible exam material. Contact the exam centre before you register. You will need a medical certificate.

Result, certificate and validity

When and where you get the result

You see your result in your Mein Goethe.de account. Your exam invitation tells you when it will be ready. If you took the exam at a partner centre, the centre gives you the result.

The certificate

When you pass, you download the certificate from your Mein Goethe.de account and print it yourself. Check that your name and date of birth are correct, because they are taken from the details you entered when you booked. The Goethe-Institut does not issue a new certificate after a change of name, for example after marriage.

How long the Goethe A1 certificate is valid

The Goethe-Institut India states that its certificates are valid indefinitely. The catch is on the other side: the office that receives it may want a recent one. For a spouse visa, the German Missions in India ask for a current certificate and state that the exam cannot have taken place more than one year ago. For any other purpose, ask the embassy, employer or school how current it must be before you plan your exam date.

If you do not pass

You get a confirmation of participation that shows your points. You can repeat the A1 exam as often as you need. It is repeated as a whole exam, so you take all four parts again and pay the fee again.

Students of the Yastudy A1 course who do not clear the exam repeat the A1 batch without paying the course fee again. This needs at least 80% attendance and the exam taken within 3 months of finishing the level.

How to prepare for the Goethe A1 exam

The Goethe-Institut's rough guide for reaching A1 is 80 to 200 lessons of 45 minutes, depending on your background and how you learn. That is 60 to 150 hours. In the Yastudy intensive course it is 40 hours of live class plus about 2 hours of your own practice on each class day, which comes to about 67 hours over 3 weeks.

A 3-week preparation plan

WeekFocusExam skill to practise every day
Week 1Greetings, introducing yourself, the alphabet, numbers, regular verbs, W-questions, the city, food and the accusativeSpeaking Teil 1: your introduction, spelling and numbers. Listening for times and prices.
Week 2Daily routine, family, modal verbs, dates, work, separable verbs, health and the imperativeReading Teil 1 to 3 against the clock. Writing Teil 1: forms.
Week 3Your home, the perfect tense, clothes and shopping, travel, then full revisionWriting Teil 2: one short message a day. Speaking Teil 2 and 3 with a partner. Two full practice exams.

This is the order of the Yastudy A1 course book: 12 lessons, each ending with a task from the real exam, and two full practice exams at the end. You also write a mock test every week, so by exam day you have sat the whole exam several times.

A daily routine that works

  • 20 minutes of listening. Play a short A1 recording twice, then read the text. Note every number and time you hear.
  • 20 minutes of words. Learn 10 to 15 new words from the Goethe A1 word list, always with the article: der Tisch, die Lampe, das Buch.
  • 20 minutes of writing. Write five sentences or one short message, then correct it with your trainer's feedback.
  • 20 minutes of speaking. Say your introduction aloud, spell five words and ask five W-questions. Record yourself once a week.
  • 40 minutes of grammar and exercises from the lesson you did in class that day.

Numbers, times, dates and prices: what to drill

Numbers appear in all four parts of the exam: you hear them in listening, read them on signs, copy them into the form, and say one aloud in speaking Teil 1. German says them differently from English in a few places, and those places are where the exam questions sit.

You seeYou hear or sayWatch out for
2.30 or 14.30halb drei or vierzehn Uhr dreißig"Halb drei" is half an hour before three
2.15Viertel nach zweiNach means past the hour
2.45Viertel vor dreiVor means to the next hour
13 and 30dreizehn, dreißigListen to the ending: -zehn or -ßig
25fünfundzwanzigThe units come first: five and twenty

€2.50zwei Euro fünfzigGerman writes it with a comma: 2,50 €
A phone numbernull, eins, sieben, sechs ...Said digit by digit or in pairs
A postcodeeins, null, eins, eins, fünfFive digits in Germany

Spelling your name: the letters that cause trouble

In speaking Teil 1 the examiner asks you to spell a word, often your name, your street or your city. English speakers mix up a few German letter names. Practise these until you stop translating:

  • A, E and I. German A is "ah", E sounds like the English letter A, and I sounds like the English letter E.
  • J, V and W. J is "yot", V is "fow" and W is "vay".
  • Y and Z. Y is "üpsilon" and Z is "tsett".
  • Ä, Ö, Ü and ß. Say the letter with its own sound, or "A Umlaut", "O Umlaut" and "U Umlaut". The ß is "Eszett" or "scharfes S".
  • Double letters. Say "Doppel-m" or simply the letter twice.

Self-study or a course

Reading and listening can be practised alone with the official practice papers. Speaking and writing cannot be checked alone: you need someone to hear your sentences and correct your message. That is one reason students join a course, and it is why the Yastudy course keeps batches at 10 to 12 and gives every student speaking time in every class. You can watch a real class before you decide.

Goethe A1 exam papers and practice tests

Start with the official practice material. The Goethe-Institut publishes it on its exam training page:

  • Three full practice papers for adults, called Exam training 1, 2 and 3. Each has listening, reading, writing and speaking, with the solutions and the listening audio to play.
  • The marking criteria and examiner sheets inside the papers, with the listening transcripts.
  • The official A1 word list. About 650 words you should understand for the exam, with example sentences.
  • An accessible online version of the practice set.
  • A video of a speaking exam, so you can see what the group exam looks like.

How to use a practice paper

  1. Do not open the practice sets in your first week. Keep them for when you have covered the whole syllabus.
  2. Sit the written parts in one go, with a timer: 20 minutes of listening, 25 of reading and 20 of writing, without a break.
  3. Play each recording only as often as the exam does.
  4. Mark your answers with the solutions and count your raw points. Multiply by 1.66 to see your result out of 100.
  5. Give your writing task to a trainer. You cannot mark your own message reliably.

Goethe A1 or telc A1: which exam

Start Deutsch 1 is offered by two providers, the Goethe-Institut and telc. Both test the same level and the same four skills, and the German Missions in India accept both for a spouse visa.
