Who Needs the dMAT? Eligibility, Exemptions and a Degree-by-Degree Check
The dMAT is mandatory for Indian applicants whose previous degree is in Engineering, in Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics, or in Business or Management, and who are applying for a Master's in Germany from the summer semester 2027 onwards. Other applicants do not need it. Use the search tool below to check whether your degree is on APS India's list.
The three-question test
- Are you applying for a Master's programme starting in the summer semester 2027 or later? If you are applying for the winter semester 2026/27, or for a Bachelor's or a PhD, you do not need the dMAT.
- Did you both register online with APS India and ship your APS documents on or after 29 June 2026? If either step was completed before that date, you are exempt for that APS procedure.
- Is your previous degree in Engineering, in Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics, or in Business / Management? If not, the dMAT does not apply to you.
Three times "yes" means the dMAT certificate is a required part of your APS documents.
Check your degree
This search covers APS India's published field list, Version 1.0 of 29 June 2026. It is a guide. APS India makes the final decision from your documents.
Quick answers for common degrees
| Your degree | Does the dMAT apply? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Chemical, Aerospace and similar branches | Yes | Listed engineering fields |
| B.E. / B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Science and Engineering | Yes | Listed engineering fields |
| B.Tech in Information Technology | Depends on the title | "Information Technology and Engineering" is listed. Information Technology as a standalone field is not automatically included. |
| B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence, AI and Machine Learning, Data Science, Cyber Security | Not automatically | These are named as standalone fields that are not automatically included. APS India decides from the official title. |
| B.Tech in Biotechnology | Depends on the title | "Biotechnology Engineering" is listed. Biotechnology without an engineering designation is not automatically included. |
| BCA, B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. IT, B.Sc. Data Science | Not automatically | Named in the list of fields not automatically included |
| B.Com, B.Com (Hons) and B.Com with any common specialisation | Yes | Listed commerce fields |
| B.A. Economics, B.Sc. Economics, Economics (Hons) | Yes | Economics is included as an economic science |
| BBA, BBM, BMS, BBS | Yes | Listed business and management fields |
| BBA in Aviation, Hospital Administration, Tourism or Hotel Management | APS India decides | Sector-specific management fields need a separate formal assessment |
| BHM, BHMCT, BTTM | APS India decides | Separate formal assessment of title, duration, institution and documents |
| B.Sc. Biotechnology, Microbiology, Life Sciences | Not automatically | Named in the list of fields not automatically included |
| B.Arch, B.Plan, Interior Design | Not automatically | Architecture and planning are not automatically included |
| B.Pharm | Not automatically | Pharmacy is not automatically included |
| B.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics | Not automatically | Pure sciences are not automatically included |
| B.A. in subjects other than Economics, LLB, B.Ed | Not automatically | Arts, humanities, law and education are not automatically included |
| MBBS, BDS, Nursing, Physiotherapy | Not automatically | Health-science degrees are not automatically included |
"Not automatically" means the degree is outside the requirement unless APS India classifies your official degree into one of the three affected groups.
How APS India decides
APS India publishes the field list as guidance and says it is not exhaustive. These are the rules it applies.
- The wording on your documents decides. APS India looks at the official degree title, branch, major, honours subject or specialisation on your degree certificate, transcripts and mark sheets.
- Marketing names do not count. The way a college advertises a course, or the Master's you plan to study, is not sufficient on its own.
- Unlisted fields can still be covered if they are clearly equivalent to a listed field.
- One word is not enough. A title that contains "Engineering", "Management", "Business", "Commerce", "Finance" or "Technology" is not covered for that reason alone if the degree title, duration or discipline does not match the applicable degree specifications.
- B.Tech is judged by its branch. It is covered where the official branch is clearly engineering.
If your degree sits between two fields, for example Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering or Financial Technology, look it up in the list. If it is not there or you are unsure, write to APS India at info@aps-india.de.
Who is exempt from the dMAT?
According to APS India, these applicants do not need the dMAT under the current procedure:
- Students applying for Bachelor's programmes in Germany
- Bachelor students who have not yet completed at least 5 semesters of a 3-year programme or at least 7 semesters of a 4-year programme
- PhD applicants
- Applicants whose previous degree is not in one of the three field groups
- Applicants in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programmes
- Applicants covered by the transitional rule below
For the exchange and partnership exemption, send the confirmation from your home university, the German partner university or the programme coordinator, including your group number, with your APS documents.
The 29 June 2026 transitional rule
The dMAT was announced on 29 June 2026. Anyone who had already started the APS procedure before that day is exempt for that procedure.
| Your situation | dMAT needed? |
|---|---|
| APS online registration completed before 29 June 2026, documents shipped later | No |
| Complete APS documents shipped before 29 June 2026, verification still running | No. Keep your proof of shipment. |
| APS certificate already issued | No |
| APS registration and shipment both on or after 29 June 2026, affected field, summer semester 2027 or later | Yes |
| A new APS application submitted at a later date | The rules in force at that time apply |
Check anabin before you register
The dMAT does not change whether your university or degree is recognised in Germany. APS India strongly advises you to check the status of your institution and degree in anabin before you pay the dMAT fee, especially if your institution is listed as H+/- or H-.
A strong dMAT result cannot make up for a degree from an institution that is not recognised.

Frequently asked questions
Is the dMAT required for B.Tech graduates?
Yes, if the official branch is an engineering field such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering or Computer Science and Engineering. APS India says that B.Tech alone is not used to include all technology fields, so a B.Tech with a non-engineering or unclear branch is not automatically covered.
Is the dMAT required for BCA or B.Sc. Computer Science?
Not automatically. APS India lists Bachelor of Computer Applications, Computer Applications, B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Information Technology and B.Sc. Data Science among the fields that are not automatically included. They are covered only if APS India classifies the official degree into one of the three affected groups.
Is the dMAT required for BBA and B.Com graduates?
Yes. BBA, BBM, BMS and B.Com, including their common specialisations, are on APS India's list of affected fields.
I am applying for a Master's in a different subject from my Bachelor's. Which one counts?
Your previous degree counts. APS India classifies you by the official title, branch, major or specialisation of the degree you already hold. It states that the intended Master's programme is not sufficient on its own to decide the question.
I hold more than one degree. Which one decides whether I need the dMAT?
The published field list speaks of the applicant's previous degree and does not explain how APS India treats applicants with several degrees. Ask APS India directly at info@aps-india.de before you register.
I registered with APS before 29 June 2026 but sent my documents later. Am I exempt?
Yes. APS India states that applicants who completed their APS online registration before 29 June 2026 are exempt for that APS procedure, even if the documents were shipped after that date.
I already have an APS certificate. Do I need the dMAT now?
No. A completed APS procedure stays valid and you do not have to take the dMAT for it. If you ever submit a new APS application, the rules in force at that time apply.
I am in my final year. Do I need the dMAT?
If you apply through APS as a Master's applicant in an affected field for the summer semester 2027 or later, yes. APS India exempts only Bachelor students who have not yet completed at least 5 semesters of a 3-year programme or 7 semesters of a 4-year programme.
Can I take the dMAT even if I am exempt?
Yes. g.a.s.t. allows voluntary attempts.
Does a good dMAT score help if my university is listed as H+/- or H- in anabin?
No. APS India states that a dMAT certificate cannot compensate for missing formal recognition of a university or degree. Check your anabin status before you register.
